I hate to say I told you so, but this has been coming for three years — ever since the McCain amendment. Everybody pooh-poohed it because it sounds too absurd. Alien combatants having constitutional rights used to sound absurd too. So did al Qaeda having Geneva Convention rights. So did the U.S. courts entertaining lawsuits by the enemy against the officials Congress authorized to fight the war. It all sounds crazy … until it happens.

The “I told you so” reference rarely makes it way into politics because the “offenders” and “enablers” always set up their plausable deniability, or in Obama’s case…they just lie. But, this is an issue with teeth that can’t be overlooked due to its outright ridiculous nature. Soldiers on the battlefield reading “Miranda Rights” is like a Saturday Night Live skit lampooning “Cops.”

However, your second sentence fills me with horror. It’s akin to saying the nuclear attack on Hiroshima awakened the people of Hiroshima to the necessity of ending the war. An Obama Presidency would truly be catastrophic, and not just for the US.

I agree with your last sentence entirely but have a hell of a lot more confidence that your country could overcome any problems that would arise than we could. We had trudeau 30 years ago and are now for all intense and purpose a socialist state. If it weren’t for natural resources we would be no more than another third world loser.

Furthermore, McCain is a weak candidate who is not strong in important issues, such as border security against illegal immigration. I read recently that California spends $15billion a year on services for illegals, an amount roughly equal to its annual debt. If I were an American voter, which thank God I am not, illegal immigration would be close to the top of my issues, and McCain is soft and evasive on this. He’s a honest man, as Senators go (which isn’t saying much), and has served his country valiantly in a losing war, but that’s not enough to make him president, or at least not enough to allow him to overcome the appeal of the Messiah. Also, he’s too old, and unlike Reagan at 72, he looks and sounds it.

BillBC, old white guy is right. The President has no power over Wall St., investment firms, mortgage lenders, banks, even the Feds are a private entity. The President doesn’t get to set the discount rate. Get real. Economic cycles with their inherent excesses and busts happen.
Bush did fail to veto spending bills when he should have and added more debt with the Medicare prescription entitlements and the ethanol sham just too name a few, but, the pigs at the trough in Congress of both parties are more to blame for the spending mess.
McCain wasn’t my first choice, but, he’s better than the Empty Suit. What do you think Obama plus a Dem Congress would do to this country? Obama is economically illiterate. We can only hope to elect McCain and hold the spot until a better Republican shows up in four years. As important we conservatives need to take back Congress.

But nothing stops him from making public speeches to the effect that the real estate market is wildly speculative, and that he will use all his influence to rein in speculation, including using the majority in the House (which they once had) to do so, etc. It’s called “the bully pulpit.” The pres has lots of power and influence, should he choose to use it. Ditto Congress. Neither did anything, and they must take a lot of the blame for this…
So basically then any president who fails to save the American people from themselves is a bad president.

OMMAG, not at all. But any American president who sees a disaster of this sort looming and does nothing to warn the country about it is not a good president. Examples?: F.D. Roosevelt’s “arsenal of democracy” speech. Wilson’s warnings about intervening in World War I. Teddy Roosevelt’s speech about “malefactors of great wealth” when he attacked monopolies. How about Reagan and the “axis of evil?” There are many examples. Isn’t that what leadership is about? Warning? Advising? Cajoling? Actually leading?
