The Secretary of State appears intent on broadcasting a display of abject capitulation in small ways as well. Last month, Rice showed up in Beirut to celebrate the formation of a new Lebanese government — a government which is largely the product of Hezbollah’s violence and extortion, and which has been broken to the saddle of Hezbollah’s supremacy in Lebanon.

CONCLUSION: This Climate Change Statement is veritably an orchestrated litany of lies, to borrow a phrase. As a longstanding member of the Royal Society of New Zealand I am unable to tolerate such a departure as this from the supposed objectives of fair or responsible comment on scientific matters, so I have resigned in protest.

Man dies in Winnipeg from a taser:
http://www.cjob.com/News/Local/Story.aspx?ID=1017824
A man in Winnipeg has died after being tasered by police Tuesday afternoon.
Police were called to the William Avenue and Arlington Street area by a resident that needed assistance. Constable Jacqueline Chaput says upon arrival police were forced to taser a man, But she could not say why they were forced to use the device.
She could not confirm reports the man was threatening officers with a knife.
An autopsy will be performed on the victim to determine the exact cause of death.
Chaput says their Homicide Unit is investigating the matter and the officer or officers involved will likely be placed on standard administrative leave.
The incident is Manitoba’s first taser-related death.
MND….some day they will learn(the Yanks) to just tell the rest of us to STFU and turn that cesspool called the ME into a glowing parking lot for new Burger Kings. Baltimore Sun ^ | July 23, 2008 | Lorraine Mirabella
Real estate mogul Sam Zell, who took control of media giant Tribune Co. about six months ago, defended yesterday the staffing and page cuts under way at The Sun and its other newspapers as necessary in the worst advertising climate in decades.
In a conference call with Tribune Co. reporters, Zell said reducing staff by as much as 25 percent in some newsrooms and shrinking and redesigning the company’s newspapers were the only options to ensure short-term survival and to allow a longer-term reinvention of the American newspaper.
“We’re looking at some of the worst advertising numbers in the history of the world,” Zell said.”

Dr. Kenneth Payne, Waging Communication War
In Iraq and Afghanistan, the United States is fighting wars in which the effective communication of ideas and information is vital. Strategists in both these conflicts increasingly share with classic counterinsurgency theorists a keen appreciation that they are fighting for the support of the population, and that communication is a key part of the struggle.
This article sets out to explore the ramifications of this feature of modern war. Communications may be vital, but how should the operational and tactical commander use them to best advantage? Why have US military and civilian authorities found effective communication so difficult in the current struggle against militant Islamism?
Dr. J. Boone Bartholomees, Jr., Theory of Victory
The United States is developing a reputation much like Germany had in the twentieth century of being tactically and operationally superb but strategically inept. Often stated as a tendency to win the war but lose the peace, this problem has a huge theoretical component that the national security community has only recently begun to address. In fact, the concept of victory is the biggest theoretical challenge facing security professionals today…

Perhaps the press hasn’t bothered to look at the two leading tracking polls (Gallup and Rasmussen) both now have McCain and Obama tied within the margin of error.
Or, more likely, they believe they must educate the ignorant masses as to the truth of their pre-determination of presidential fitness.

“China: Blasts in buses kill three
Times of India ^ | 22 Jul 2008, 0016 hrs IST
BEIJING: Deliberate explosions on three Chinese buses killed at least three people and injured 14 in the southwestern city of Kunming on Monday, media said, amid a security clampdown ahead of next month’s Beijing Olympics.
The official Xinhua news agency blamed the blasts on “sabotage” and said police had started roadside checks in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province, to try to find the person or persons responsible. It did not elaborate.
The attack happened less than three weeks before the Beijing Games which China has warned could be a target of terror attacks.
An explosion on one bus happened at the Panjiawan stop at 7.10am and the second blast was nearby, Xinhua said.
Pictures showed a gaping hole in the side of one of the buses and glass scattered in the street.
Another explosion occurred near Minshan, also nearby, the semi-official China News Service said in a report on its website.
Two people were killed at the scene and one died on the way to hospital, the report said. But a Yunnan government official said by telephone from Kunming there had only been two explosions, and declined further comment.
China has occasionally witnessed bus explosions staged by disgruntled farmers or laid-off workers wanting to air grievances over poverty, demolitions or corruption. China also claimed that a separatist Islamic movement was planning terror attacks on the Beijing Olympic venues.”

New York Times Co. says its second-quarter earnings fell 82 percent from the year-ago quarter boosted by a one-time gain. Meanwhile, print advertising revenue continued to shrink.
The New York-based newspaper publisher says its quarterly net income dropped to $21.1 million, or 15 cents per share, which included 11 cents per share in buyout costs.
Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected income of 22 cents per share in the latest quarter. Analyst estimates typically exclude special items.
Revenue dropped 6 percent to $741.9 million, missing the average Wall Street estimate for $754 million. Ad revenue slipped down 11 percent, hurt mostly by fewer classified ads.
Chief Executive Janet Robinson says business was hurt by the “U.S. economic slowdown and secular forces playing out across the media industry.”

…”Yesterday, Industry Minister Jim Prentice said some of the auction money might also go to help cut taxes, adding that the cabinet will make a decision soon….”
Seems Prentice Of LightHead is pushing out the good news stories. Since the $4.25 billion he raised from the auction is simply a tithe on providers, the providers will price their capital to provide their own hurdle rate (yep, you’ll get pay them the $4 billion back – through your phone rates – at a crisp 12% rate of return. Don’t worry, they’ve got their backs).
….And ‘better’ yet, this piece of fluff story ignores the orgy of spending the Cons have been pushing out on the BBQ circuit…..The fact is, ‘The Grits exercised greater fiscal discipline (than the Cons).’
“The lazy, hazy days of summer are here and Conservative MPs are crisscrossing the country and showering it with money. According to news stories, the federal government has announced some $3-billion in spending priorities since Parliament recessed for the summer less than a month ago. That is roughly $100-million a day or more than $4-million every hour. Weren’t the Conservatives elected to root out waste in government and spend tax dollars judiciously?
Conservative partisans will insist these funding announcements were made adhering to all the proper rules and guidelines. Of course, these would be the very same oversight measures they loudly protested in opposition when the then-governing Liberals of Jean Chrétien and Paul Martin spent wildly, hoping to buy votes. Another favourite Conservative talking point is Canadians are getting more value for their tax dollars because Ottawa is better managed today. Taxpayers therefore shouldn’t fret over a few billion dollars in spending. But there is little evidence of this improved management. In fact, it is no contest between the Harper government’s spending and that of Mr. Chrétien’s government. The Grits exercised greater fiscal discipline.
Perhaps this judgment is unfair since Mr. Chrétien governed with a House of Commons majority and Stephen Harper does not. So how does the Prime Minister match up with Mr. Martin, another minority leader? Mr. Martin’s fiscal recklessness grew the size of government by 14% over two years. This certainly qualifies him as a big spending Liberal. The Conservatives have controlled the government purse strings since early 2006. After their first two years, Ottawa had grown another 14.8%. This is higher than Mr. Martin’s appalling record, making Mr. Harper a bigger spending Conservative.”
So much for Prentice Of Lighthead. That smell out there is bull. While the partisans here will avoid cognitive dissonance at all costs, the fact is, you have a Librano government. Better get rationalizing, you can do it!
Here, I’ll help you get started….Hey everyone! It’s tax cuts from Jim! Thank you Jim! The Cons are wonderful!!! Let’s donate and save the country!!

Yukon Gold, I can tell by the first sentence or two of a post whether it is written by hardboiled or not…and when I recognize the poster’s style, I skip reading it just like I skip reading postings by New, Haye, Isam, et al.
I don’t necessarily believe that hardboiled’s points are incorrect (Conservative politicians are NOT Boy Scouts…yes, I know), but Conservatives are the best of a bad lot. Compared to the competition, Conservatives are almost saintly…but even the best of politicians is little better than a used car salesman, IMHO.
Whining about the imperfection of Conservative politicians is as bad as complaining about the weather…there’s not a damn thing you can do about it, so you may as well make the best of a bad situation.
I realize hardboiled posts are consistently tedious, but no one is forcing you to read them.
True, Eeyore, and for the most part, I tend to skip over the most ridiculous of posts. I do hate someone pretending to be something they are not, however.
Hardboiled will never, ever, ever be happy with a conservative government. If they do something he/she likes, hardboiled will just move the goalposts. It’s like posts from a left-winger, just less honest.

hardboiled – I don’t understand your complaints. You complain about the Conservatives ‘spending money’. But the money isn’t theirs to keep. It’s ours, the taxpayer. So it ought to be given back to us – and that’s what they are doing. Why does that upset you?
Equally, the Conservatives have reduced both personal and corporate and business taxes. The GST cut from 7 to 5% (that ‘loss’ is what Dion is trying to make up with his Carbon Tax).
Increasing the individual deductible.
Reduced the corporate tax rate from 22% to 15% by 2012.
Reduced small business tax from 12 to 11% in 2008.
Increased capital gains exemption for small business from 500,000 to 750,000- the first increase in nearly 20 years.
Putting the surplus against the national debt – something the Liberals didn’t do.
And so on…
So, what’s your beef?
We know you hate Harper and Flaherty, but, dealing with just the raw data – what’s your problem?
Eeyore is right!
hardboiled is softheaded if he/she expects to find virtue in politicians. So stop whining about how imperfect the conservatives are.
The definition of politicians should include “short-sighted, and self-serving”. Nobody should expect a whole lot from them.
It’s all relative. And the alternatives are far, far, worse…
If “someone” put Mr. Mao Stlong’s name forward for an Order of Canada” will he come home to accept it? clearly he deserves this much from us.
someguy, eeyore – I don’t think that the state of ‘being a politician’ means that you have lost all morality, reason and goodwill, ie, that you have become as self-focused as that infamous used car saleman.
It’s a difficult position to be in, the fact that you are responsible for, effectively, what isn’t yours – not merely not yours in lack of ownership but not yours in terms of being the result of any work that you did: taxpayer money; the well-being of these same people etc.
Then, there’s the enormous hidden governing system, the civil service, which is outside of the control of the electorate and even, of the politicians. And there are the worker’s unions. Plus, the special interest groups who have effectively taken over much of the agenda of that bureaucracy (human rights, minority groups, linguistic, ethnic, etc).
So, getting something done within the political arena, filled with running bulls of different colours, isn’t easy.

A FORMER member of the Italian terrorist group the Red Brigades has stopped eating and is being treated in a French prison hospital after the president, Nicolas Sarkozy, ordered her extradition to Italy last month.
…
On 3 June, Mr Sarkozy ordered the extradition of Petrella to Italy, where she was sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment in 1992 for her role in the murder of an Italian police inspector in Rome in 1981, attempted kidnapping, attempted murder, kidnapping a judge, armed theft and terrorist attacks.
His decision caused outrage among human rights activists and members of the left-wing opposition, who accused him of betraying the amnesty offered to ex-members of the far-left revolutionary Red Brigades members in 1985 by the then president, François Mitterrand.
…
Last week the French Green party, the Human Rights League and other organisations launched a campaign for Petrella’s release on humanitarian grounds, describing the current situation as “revolting, incomprehensible and incoherent”.
…
Dozens of Red Brigades members fled to France in the 1980s to escape prosecution in Italy. The amnesty offered by Mr Mitterrand was first rescinded in 2002 with the extradition of Paolo Persichetti, who was sentenced to a 22-year prison term.

Or, he may just not realize that all votes are for the lesser of the available evils.
As H. L. Mencken said, “Government consists of a gang of men exactly like you and me. They have, taking one with another, no special talent for the business of government; they have only a talent for getting and holding office. Their principal device to that end is to search out groups who pant and pine for something they can’t get and to promise to give it to them. Nine times out of ten that promise is worth nothing. The tenth time is made good by looting A to satisfy B. In other words, government is a broker in pillage, and every election is sort of an advance auction sale of stolen goods.”

Mencken’s quote is elegant, if not simply nihlistic. And while I am happy (and unhappy) about many things in this great world in which we live, I do believe that adherence – intellectually and philosophically, to a socio-political construct – to be THE sole perogative and honest declaration of the citizen. That the responsibility and entreat of the citizen is to praise, criticize, and parse the very formations of the society in which they are a part, and sworn member of.
As a conservative, as a libertarian, as a lover of freedom, liberty, and equality of all citizens before the formal power structures of the state, I simply lay claim to speak my mind and urge those of similar inclination to view, review, ponder, and reflect upon the principles of conservatism.
As put forward above, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation has an issue with unbudgeted expeditures primarily made for vote buying.
That violates an important, and fundamental belief of mine: that all citizens are equal. Which to me, in the long run, equality implies similar per capita spending.
Am I an idealist? I don’t think so. I just believe it is the right thing for government to do.
I’ll endure ad hominems, straw men, among other comments. It is a free world, and hey, I have learned a few things here. The Cons have made some strides in the morass that is governance towards a better model. But, where they depart philosophically from they claim to be is where I comment.
To me, that is the duty of the citizen.

Even the best-intentioned amongst them will sell (at least some of) their principles for election/re-election. I accept Mencken’s quote as being quite close to the mark, but there is a healthy dose of malice thrown into the mix, too (imho).
