Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation and pursuant to our Thursday night wild-card show, here are Bill Monroe and The Bluegrass Boys, with guest Marty Stuart, performing Southern Flavor (c. 1990, 4:40).
Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.
Update: I forgot to mention. In Thursday’s National Post there was an Alberta on a Vanity Mission essay by Kevin Libin which noted the general foolishness of statist re-branding efforts. What really caught my eye though was that one of the proposed new Alberta license plate slogans is apparently Strong and Free, and, apparently, the Edmonton Journal editorialized that said slogan “Sounds distinctly American”.
![]() |
But here’s the thing. The Alberta motto, on the Alberta Coat of Arms, has been, for over a hundred years, since Alberta’s inception, (in Latin) Fortis et Liber, which you might note if you translate it back into English literally means Strong and Free. Oy. You know, when I first started reading the Journal forty years ago, it was in my opinion a balanced centrist newspaper. It is now, in my opinion, a communist waste of ink, which is why I canceled my subscription a couple years ago.
Personally, I think that if we Albertans are going to change our licence plate slogan, we should actually change it to Fortis et Liber, or failing that, Bei Mir Bist Du Shein (or in English, “To Me You’re Beautiful”, see video).

Good News – sort of –
1. Go to a GM or Chrysler site.
2. Work through a “build your own” section to get to the finance options.
3. Check out the lease rates being offered. Chrysler is charging 12.29%; GM is charging 12.54%!!!
What does that mean?
It means that the finance arms of the two companies have no faith that the posted residual values of the cars 3 to 4 years hence will be worth the paper they are written on.
Why?
Because they think that their parent companies won’t be around in 3 to 5 years time.
This is a very strong sign that they are on the brink of bankruptcy.
Why is this good news – sort of?
Because while there will be tremendous upheaval if they go under, it will also be the end of the trade unions and the pension and health plan liabilities that have crippled the big three. It will mean that the bloated dealership distribution system will be pruned back severely as well, and that the factories, etc. will be bought up for pennies on the dollar and the US – already a very cost competitive place to assemble cars will be an even more competitive one.
Let the renaissance begin…

The Toronto Star is whipping up quite the nationalist lather a story with the following headline:
“U.S. firm eyes the Bay, Zellers: Reports”
It goes on:
Ownership of the Hudson’s Bay Co., a Canadian retailing icon, may again be up for grabs, according to sources.
A U.S.-based private equity firm is said to be “aggressively pursuing” the Hudson’s Bay Co.
“Aggressive”. American. Shocking that they can might take over a “Canadian retailing icon”, eh?
Except that HBC was bought by the Americans almost three years ago, a fact that didn’t escape me, a guy who quit reading newspapers years ago, but appears to have escaped an actual business reporter. From wikipedia:
“On January 26, 2006, HBC’s board unanimously agreed to a bid of $15.25 CAD/share from Jerry Zucker, whose original bid was $14.75 CAD/share, ended a prolonged fight between HBC and Zucker, a South Carolina billionaire financier and longtime HBC minority shareholder.”
History really does start fresh every day for these people, doesn’t it? The comments accompanying the article are suitably critical of the extremely low quality reportage:
Why is everyone upset about this? It’s was already bought my an American from South Carolina two years ago! This is not new!

give the faux nationalism a rest
The Bay is an American owned company, has been since 2006, because there is nobody in Canada with the resources to buy it. As it is the company is a retailing dinosaur, Zucker could not turn this sinkhole around, so don’t blame Americans because they have the funding…

New Alberta plate: “We Have The Power”
TorStar Watch: Good catch!
If “Strong and Free” sounds distinctly American, what is it doing in our national anthem?

Right on Vit, about the Strong and Free.

This reminds me of the same Edm Journal slagging us separatists when we designed this great looking new flag for a new Western Canada.
The Journal used both neurons to denigrate us by saying it was red, white and blue, just like the big bad ‘merican Stars and Stripes.
And that was bad, bad, bad.
In actual fact, it was red, white and blue because of our connection to the UNION JACK.
But that connection just totally escaped the Edm Journal which at the time was just a rabid Liberal mouthpiece for Demarais’s Power Corp.
They wouldn’t have known an original idea if slapped them in the face.
And some say they still don’t.

Some more good stuff coming about as the result of an accident?
Thursday’s Nat. Post had the story of 4 First Nation communities about 100 miles N of Edmonton who are in the process of taking back their towns from the gangs after one young child was shot in some gangland crossfire. More gang members per capita than anywhere else in Canada. One reason is because, each person receives $200,000 upon reaching their 18th birthday: their share of the oil royalties. Many are unaccustomed to so much money and easily fall prey to the gangs who want ‘their share.’
Citizens are mobilizing and tipping the RCMP who are literally going gangbusters in arresting members and not only in the affected communities but Edmonton as well.
23 gang member houses built >$3 million have been razed. Graffiti is being erased. Flowers are being planted and kids are freeplaying in the park.
Luckily, the little girl will survive.
Now, if urbanites could do the same…
A grab-bag of thoughts this morning.
If Alberta wants to put “Strong and Free” or even, for that matter, “YEE-HA!” on its plates, its nobody’s business but Alberta’s. Last time I checked, car plates were a provincial/territorial responsibility, not a federal one.
And “Strong and Free” can hardly be considered any more offensive than the “je me souviens” on Québec plates (which happens to be the motto of that province). Also, if the phrase “strong and free” sounds “too American”, why is it to be found in the English lyrics of our national anthem?
On a much more annoying note, did anyone catch a particularly vituperative article by the tedious Toronto-based Heather Mallick a few days ago? Probably not, because she wrote it for The Guardian, a British newspaper.
In this article, she slags off the efforts of Hector Goudreau, the Alberta minister for immigration, who was in London to find ways to attract skilled Brits to come to his province. Not only does she poke fun at Goudreau, implying he’s a hick, but she is most vicious about Alberta.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/jul/02/canada.immigration
I have only one question for the odious Mallick:
“So, you’re a Canadian journalist who cheerfully accepted money from a foreign newspaper to write an article insulting your own country?”
The Mallick piece deserves more Canadian exposure.

And speaking of signs for a coming federal election, we now have the most dreaded of all Cdn political diseases, the Obsessive Compulsive French Language Disorder making news again.
Or OCFLD for short.
OCFLD Sufferer Gilles Caron wants his traffic ticket and all Alberta govt paper in French and English.
Me, I just love pointing out that the Feds tell us to reduce our waste and to plant trees for the world.
At the same time the mealy-mouthed Feds are the ones needlessly burning up our trees using twice the paper for 2 langauges for the phantom phrenchmen in the ROC.
BTW, the Alberta population is 3.5 million with a claimed 220,000 French language users, or about 0.06% of population.
Some of these OCFLD afflicted people seem to be the only guys that are unaware that the world has changed.
But wait, is this the same Gilles Caron mentioned here:
“Directed to Gilles J Caron, the City of Edmonton Transportation and Streets ……..
Re;
A duty of fair representation complaint under Section 153 of the Labout Relations code brought by Gilles Caron affecting Canadian Union of Public Employees, Loocal 30, Richard Colwell and the City of Edmonton…
1) Pursuant to a complaint March 15 2004, Gilles Caron alleges CUPE, Local 30 and Richard Colwell,
breached the duty of fair representaion owed to him…….by failling to properly represent him in relation to his grievance against the City of Edmonton over its decision not to recommend him for seasonal recall in 2004.
2)…blah blah blah.
Background
3)Mr Caron began employment with the city in 1996 as a temporary labourer and was recalled for summer employment in each year up to and including 2003, eventually attaining status of a provisional employee. During most of this period of employment he was classified as a Labourer/Truck Driver 3 and worked in various areas of the Transportation and Streets Department.
4) On or about Nov 07, 2003, Mr Caron received an employee evaluation signed by his foreman and supervisor that indicated he would not be eligible for recall in 2004. The document outlines the reasons for this decision and, in the main, they relate to his inability to get along with his co-workers……….”
To summarize:
First of all, we had the socially regressive and tribal nationalist Pierre Trudeau imposing his personal view of Canada being governed forever only by a bilingual, bicultural francophone elite with his French langauge laws.
And now this retarded language law is being used by a person who has an ‘inability to get along with his co-workers’ to impose the needless costs of French on Ab taxpayers.
Reality shows the dull French language becomes more irrelevant and redundent in the world every day, having only about 300,000 words in it.
Our beautiful English language on the other hand grows by leaps and bounds with new words being added all the time, and has about 1,000,000 words now.
Would somebody buy these OCFLD guys a calender and clock to get them into the present century?

“Dog off the menu for Olympics
BEIJING has asked hotels and restaurants in the city to take dog meat off the menu for the duration of next month’s Olympics and September’s Paralympics.
Dog is eaten by the large Korean community in China’s capital and is also popular in Yunnan and Guizhou restaurants.
A directive from the Beijing Food Safety Office issued last month ordered Olympic contractor hotels not to provide any dishes made with dog meat and said any canine material used in traditional medicated diets must be clearly labelled.
Concerned that canine dishes might offend animal rights groups and Western visitors, Beijing said restaurants expected to be popular among foreign visitors must stop serving dog meat “to respect the dining customs of different countries”.
The directive “advocated” that all restaurants serving dog suspend it during the Olympics but made no mention of the many popular establishments with donkey on the menu.”

As noted above, the phrase ‘strong and free’ is in the second paragraph of our national anthem, where the words are:
‘With glowing hearts we see thee rise, the True North Strong and Free’.
Now, most certainly, the Edmonton Journal newspaper, unaware both of the official motto of Alberta and of the official words of the Canadian national anthem – can declare that these words sound ‘American’. But that means that they reject both qualities in Canadian life. Being strong. And being free. Rather a sad fate for Canadians, being weak and enslaved.
And possibly, the weakness and enslavement of the Edmonton Journal’s editors to the fog of leftist sophistry led them to their life of ignorance about that Alberta motto and those words in our national anthem.
You’re right. It does sound to “American.” How about “Bend me Over?”

Robert Lee Hotz, The Search for the Hidden da Vinci
Florence
It was midnight in the great hall of the Palazzo Vecchio here, and scientists were stalking the cold ghost of a vanished masterpiece. Armed with an infrared reflectometer, they searched for hidden traces of a mural by Leonardo da Vinci that helped change the course of Western art. The fabled artwork may be concealed within the walls, masked for centuries by overlays of paint, plaster, brick — and a thick patina of misinformation.
For 30 years, Maurizio Seracini, a pioneer in forensic art analysis, has been experimenting with noninvasive imaging techniques to find the da Vinci mural — should it still exist — without touching or disturbing the equally priceless frescoes painted over it. Dr. Seracini’s fascination with da Vinci’s missing masterwork — The Battle of Anghiari — spurred a revolution in the science of art diagnostics, harnessing an array of medical and military technologies, ranging from radar mapping and X-ray fluorescence to ultrasound probes and ultraviolet scans…

There at Los Angeles International Airport on June 15, 2005, officials with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement bureau intercepted his plane, arrested Durrani, and took him into custody. The warrant accused him of two counts of violating the Arms Export Control Act for selling fighter-jet parts to Iran…
Perhaps as interesting as Durrani’s extracurricular Mexican activities and his persistent presence in US arms sales to Iran from the Reagan to the George W. Bush administrations is this paradox. Just as the Bush administration has led a concerted effort to cobble together an international alliance to isolate Iran, statistics from the US government document a rather startling fact: a rise in the instances of export-controlled, sensitive US technology, in particular fighter-jet and military-aircraft parts, making their way to Iran.
Hungary’s legal approach to “extreme” political speech now officially insane
Hungary’s legal approach to “extreme” political speech now officially insane By Erik D’Amato So I’ll try to keep this short, because if I think about it too much I’ll probably have a nervous breakdown. As you may have heard, two interesting and potentially far-reaching court decisions were handed down on Tuesday regarding political speech in Hungary. In the first, the European Court of Human Rights struck down a law banning the communist-style red star, which Hungary enacted back in 1994. Meanwhile, that same day a local court in Budapest ruled that egg-throwing is a form of protected political speech, provided people cut it out if the cops tell them to. While this might seem like a massive victory for free speech, there’s one small (i.e. huge)
problem: according to index.hu, the Strasbourg decision does not apply to the swastika or the arrow cross, the display of which are still rigidly controlled by the original law against “symbols of tyranny.” So just to quickly connect the dots here, it’s now legal to pelt people you hate with eggs, but not to show them a picture that might hurt their feelings.
Obviously the next important theory the country’s constitutional eggheads need to work over is whether it’s legal to paint a picture of a swastika or arrow cross on an egg and then throw it at someone…

The stakes are high. Science and technology are essential to economic growth, standard of living and national security. But has U.S. science and technology really weakened?
Our research says no: The United States has more than kept pace with its peers by several measures. Research and development expenditures are growing more rapidly in the United States than in Europe and Japan. The growth in researchers in Japan has been considerably lower than that of the United States, while in Europe it is about the same as in the United States.
Although China, India and South Korea are starting to account for a significant portion of the world’s science and technology activities, and are showing rapid growth, they still account for a very small share of patents, science publications and citations. The United States, meanwhile, continues to invest in science and technology infrastructure, is creating significant employment in science and engineering, and benefits from the immigration of foreign-born science and engineering students and workers…

“Muslim healer of small penises dies aged 128”
(telegraph.co.uk)
An Indonesian woman who was famous across Asia for her supposedly supernatural powers of sexual healing has died at the age of 128, according to her family.
Mak Erot developed a family business empire offering penis extensions and cures for other sexual maladies using the power of Muslim prayer and a cocktail of 141 herbs. One of her 40 grandchildren, Haji Saifuloh, 37, explained that the secret was revealed when Mak Erot prayed for 141 days following the death of her mother in the 1940s.
“Her prayer was answered with this gift of sexual healing,” he said. A voice from the spirit world told his grandmother, “You can cure anyone who has a small penis or whose penis has died. You can cure them!”

“Shock Bracelet Considered For Airline Passengers, Border Control” (informationweek.com)
The Department of Homeland Security has solicited a proposal from a Canadian security company to develop a stun bracelet.
In order to enhance the security of air travel and to help manage illegal immigration, the Department of Homeland Security has solicited a proposal from a Canadian security company to develop a passenger stun bracelet.
Like the pain collars featured in the classic Star Trek episode The Gamesters of Triskelion, Lamperd Less Lethal’s electro-muscular disruption (EMD) bracelet is intended to incapacitate wearers on remote command.
A video at the Lampred Less Lethal Web site explains that the bracelet will obviate the need for a plane ticket and will help make passengers and baggage trackable while traveling. It also explains that the bracelet will provide in-flight security.
“By further equipping the bracelet with EMD technology, the bracelets will allow crew members, using radio frequency transmitters, to quickly and effective subdue hijackers,” the video explains. “The electro-muscular disruption signal overrides the attacker’s central nervous system and will render even the most elite and aggressive terrorist completely immobile for several minutes.”

Actually in the Edm Journal article it stated that the census says there are only 65,995 French Albertans which is only 2.2% of the population.
The much larger 220,000 of all Albertans using French is clearly one of those extravagant claims to justify the cost.
“The reforms I am proposing must therefore be written into the constitution itself, …..
‘In any province where there is a French or English minority exceeding 15% or one-half million inhabitants, no law relating to legislative or judicial functions will be valid if it does not place the English and French languages on a basis of absolute judicial equality; however a number will not be considered to exceed 15% or one-half million inhabitants, unless it has been so established at two successive decennial censuses.’ – Pierre Trudeau 1965.

“Graeme Hamilton: Quebec feminists erupt over Molson’s ‘Goddess’ calendars
MONTREAL — Using pretty women to sell beer is not exactly a novel idea, but Molson finds itself under attack this week for a series of calendars featuring scantily clad Quebec “goddesses.”
The idea was to highlight the most beautiful women from five Quebec regions, and auditions were held to make the selections. In some cases the winners received a trip to Cuba for the photo shoot.
The images (which you can see here, and are only marginally safe for work) are for the most part no racier than what one would find in Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit edition (Mind you, Miss February in the Quebec City version, wrapped in a strategically placed length of rope, would raise a few eyebrows on the beach).
Feminist groups have denounced the promotion as sexist and borderline pornographic. “It’s disgusting,” Estelle Lebel of a feminist research group told Le Devoir. “It’s on a par with the old garage calendars. It’s as if we go one step forward and two steps back.”
