  1. But Captain, you forgot about the rate of tornadoes! If you factor that in, plus, Iraq, Bush, AGW, racism against Obama and salmonella on tomatoes, the US is far more eeeeeeeeevil!

  2. No accounting for Supply managed ag subsidies in CDA (estimated at 15BB/annum) I presume.
Factoring out military spending might be useful too.
    and what about crown corps?

  3. Captain Capitalism has determined that Americans and Canadians are taxed at the same rate?
is this supposed to be a joke?
there is nothing funny about Canadian tax rates as they remain the most punitive and excessive on the planet….
it is Canadian taxes which have taken the momentum out of our economy and resulted in a massive exodus of the manufacturing sector…
but the best part is that Dion is going to campaign on a pledge to increase taxes ???
I know, I know, Dion pledges to reduce some taxes while increasing others – his “green plan” to save the planet – how fu#@in’ courageous of him….
it’s the marxist in Dion which wants to regulate our lives and he plans to do it by taxing bad behavior
Dion is a typical communist and Captain Capitalism will never make it as a comedian

  4. What are the Captain’s “expenditures”?
The government is raking in billions more than it “spends”; much money goes to quangos; how big now is the EI surplus? Is this included in government expenditure? I doubt it, although it is still a tax.

  5. Brad, I cannot believe the Liberals will run an election campaign upon a general, across the board tax increase. No one will believe they will reduce other taxes. We’ve already had the “revenue neutral” GST and the Liberal Promise to repeal it; and McGuilty’s promise not to raise taxes.
And besides, increased taxes will not save the planet; not that it needs saving, mind you.

  6. All that graph tells me is that the US government is running itself into the ground by taking on a big deficit, and the Canadian government is running its citizens into the ground by taking on a big surplus.
And that they’re both spending far too much of the GDP either way.

  7. As a Canadian I feel unduly flattered.
What about provincial and municipal taxes?

  8. The title on this post is quite misleading. It should have been: America about to become more statist than Canada. That is a more accurate description about what is going on.
A few of the commenters have correctly pointed out the problems with Canada. However, they have not balanced the scenario by pointing out similar problems with America. Many comparisons stop with a simple comparison between personal income tax rates between the two countries. Such a comparison will obviously (and correctly) favour the American side. However, whereas America taxes income more favourably from the point of view of the taxpayer, it also has more types of taxes and its taxes in many areas (outside of personal income) far exceed the Canadian equivslent.
I am only slightly surprised that the Americans have caught up to the Canadians in statism. Canadians who do not like a large state system often point out the size of Canada social programs but often fail to mention the size of American military spending. Whereas military spending is correctly perceived as not being part of socialism, that spending does increase the size of the state.
These numbers are not a huge surprise to anyone who has recently lived in both countries.
