What I don’t get is PM Harper’s take on this. As an economist he knows the Kyoto thing is a crock, especially for Canada. He mentioned in his speech on this issue that the country’s economy was more important, but trade and caps (or some other such formula of taxation re carbon) was somewhat on some sort of track with Kyoto targets.

The senate hearing re oil in the Us was interesting. The chief exec of Exxon I believe was playing hardball (drilling and refining in the 48 and Alaska) right up untill the end when he stated how committed Exxon was to alternative energy.
Was that because of the “greens” in the senate or his company’s subsidies for “developing” alt energy.

Apparently I could live forever if I take the bus/train, live in a flat with 4 or more people, only spend 10,000 dollars a year on “green stuff”, use renewable energy and never fly.
But since I live in the real world, commute and you know… can afford to go on vacations.. I am only allowed to live for 7.2 years.

I died at 1.9 the first time. It was largely attributable to two factors: excess 40K in air travel FOR work which ballooned the pig hugely and
spending in excess all up of 100K last year. Marriage does that.
Oddly, when I listed the air travel as NOT for work it had little effect on the piggy.

The Senate, both Republicans & Democrats were pushing hard to get a pattern set of answers. They are not stupid, but I think they failed to get solutions stamped by the oil Industry. Yes they wanted the word “Energy” to replace the word OIL
Q) That OPEC could increase output and that would decrease price.
They all said OPEC was not the problem.. EXXON went further, when pushed, & said that an existing saturated supply would become more saturated, and yes the price should drop. Exxon said three times that the supply was saturated and 85% refinery output met demand.
What surprised me was that someone on the Senate said that the US consumption had remained near constant (the same) for >20 years. That suggests that our dependence on OPEC is a manufactured spread.

The CEO of Exxon has now said that AGW needs to be debated. It is “not” Intelligent to support a science that has not been developed by rigorous debate.
BTW: Its June and Boxer’s SEnate Energy bill is due. The MSM is down playing the event…

I used to be one of the gloomy nihilistic eco-fundamentalists. They have no hope since there is nothing in their belief system beyond themselves. It is only their vanity which keeps them from the suicide that they would have our children commit.
Ignore them, have 10 kids, don’t send your kids to public school since teachers there think like eco-funamentalists. Raise them as God fearing conservatives who don’t just talk but really help others and tell them that the world will work itself out in time, we human beings are a creative lot. 1.4 years due primarily to air travel, much of it involuntary but necessary, and capital expenditures. Suspect I actually should live to see 1.6 years since some of the fortune we spent last year involved replacing the windows in the house with high-end, energy-efficient versions. AND, the original casements and interior doors from our house were given to a young couple we met who’re trying to run their own business, raise kids and make improvements to their home as well. So, really green for a rock-ribbed Republican. My take-away is that Australia needs quickly a big, red metal flake Lincoln pick up or Chevy Corvette to help them understand priorities more clearly.
I guess the moral of the story is to live every day like it’s your last cause you’re stealing them from Al Gore’s kids…
