Reader Tips

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Kate has asked me to look after the daily Reader Tips entries while she is away, by combining them with the SDA LNR shows. So without further ado, here for your delectation is Zubin Mehta conducting the massed Israel Philharmonic and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras, in Tel Aviv in 1990, performing the allegro finale from Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, op. 67 by Ludwig van Beethoven:

Your reader tips are of course, as always, welcome in the comments.

SDA LNR Update: Harvey Korman has passed away. Cal2, in the comments, has already noted this three part Archive of American Television interview with Harvey Korman and Tim Conway. On a lighter note, you might also enjoy this Friendly Business Lunch sketch, starring Harvey Korman, Tim Conway, and Steve Lawrence, from, of course, the inimitable Carol Burnett show.

  1. Administrative Note: I originally published this entry at about 21:00 on May 29, SDA time, and then I realized that we had two May 29 Reader Tips entries, which is not standard SDA form, so I advanced the virtual time of this entry to get it into tomorrow. In a couple hours the dates will sync up and it will all look normal (except for the timestamps on comments posted before then, which will appear to be before the entry was posted, although we’ve seen that before). Tomorrow night Vitruvius time I’ll start doing Reader Tips / SDA LNR shortly after 00:00 SDA time, as Kate usually does. Sorry for any confusion.

  2. Sigh, Canada, while on average better than the US in terms of broadband connectivity, still is lacking in high-speed access. My brother, who live in the deep dark boonies of southern Manitoba, was exulting about taking master’s classes with Placido Domingo via youtube, without noticing the slightest delay. I drive by the Nortel cathedral every day on my way in to work…and a 10 minute clip takes me a half an hour.
I’ve a nice fat pipe at work, though, but I’m getting to old to regularly work past midnight. For the ovaltine crowd, Vit, why not post at 2100?

  3. The thing is, Tenebris, that Kate had been making a fairly regular standard of posting Reader Tips entries just after midnight for the day to which they are, generally speaking, intended to apply. This means that for most folks, the Reader Tips entry is ready to go and relatively pristine when they gear up in their morning, as dated.
The problem then becomes that if I start monkeying around with the traditionally standard Reader Tips entry time, as a guest author at SDA, then that might interfere with the intentions of Kate.
It does seem to me that if the Reader Tips thread is not at least to some degree synchronized with overnight, at least from the perspective of most of the SDA readers, then it suffers a discontinuity that does not so much apply to other entries, because the normal tips cycle tends to be somewhat naturally diurnal.
Under these circumstances, I’m sticking with the known SDA standards.

  4. Interesting article in the June 2 issue of New York (magazine) about both camps courting New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg as a possible V.P. (The Power Grid/John Heilemann – “The Catch”).
For both candidates he would bring business credentials, a non-partisanship image and possibly a lot of money. For McCain the latter asset would be a great help, given the (so far) gap between his and Obama’s fundraising.
Although New York would probably stay in the blue camp, Bloomberg would bring in Jewish voters in Florida, New Jersey and Pennsylvania and surprisingly, to a much lessor extent, voters in retirement states such as Colorado and Utah.
For myself, I would be afraid Bloomberg as V.P. to McCain might alienate rural blue-collar voters since Bloomberg might come across as a old-fashioned Rockefeller plutocrat. Not to mention he has anti-gun, pro-abortion views. But he might help McCain distance himself even further from Bush with this Republican-turned-Independent.

I thought that was funny. Over the top, but he has a point about her feeling entitled.

  10. The conservative version of Earth Hour is set for this June 12th. It’s Carbon Belch Day.
Rev your SUV’s, BBQ an endangered animal, take up residence in David Suzuki’s house – do what you can to pump CO2 into the atmosphere.

You must mean, “the retarded version of Earth Hour”. As a conservative, I find it unfortunate that I’m associated with retarded activities like this.
Do I have to post this 3 times too?

  11. As someone who’s approaching old timer status, the death of Harvey Korman feels a bit like the tide’s coming in. Who’s next?
I used to watch The Carol Burnett Show faithfully every week. What show can touch it today? Korman, Burnett, and Conway (Lawrence, IMHO, was the weak link) were incomparable. ‘Come to think of it, they were servants to their craft, which was to be funny: They weren’t celebrity icons, which is all we seem to have today, heavy on the celebrity and minimal in talent.
    RIP, Harvey Korman.

    Why be so over-reactive?
There are better ways to handle this.We can be a positive influence without the rebellious theme.

  16. First mention seen in MSM of Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister David Emerson.
Note AssPress (AP) uses Myanmar in its headline to describe the socialists in Burma. Minister Emerson uses the name Burma. Right on.
Meanwhile, in the House of Commons, Ottawa, what is bighting/outraging Citoyen Dion’s socialist Liberals?
    Nocturnal parasites, aka Bedbugs.
