Hate consumes both survivour and victim. Always has.
Some kinds of hatred are good. I hate fascism, communism and the teachings of the KKK. All forms of supremacist ideology should be hated since it destroys civil society and discourse. The Jihadist movement backed by Salafi theology/ideology should be hated by people of good will.
Supremacist Muslims (not all Muslim are this) believe that they are above criticism and that a special consideration should be given their religious beliefs. Fortunately for us, in Canada we believe that all people are equal. These Muslims should be free from threats but not criticism. They should be free from harassment, but not from contempt for their sexist theology.
People with ideas others consider contemptible should not expect to go unchallenged. I hold to the Pope’s teaching on sexuality and therefore folks like me run into contempt when discussing homosexuality, birth control, or abortion. Do those who think I’m wrong “hate” me. Perhaps they do, however I don’t feel threatened. All I except from Canadian society is to be able to peaceably explain why I believe these positions to be true, live out these truths and to teach these truths to my children. Others can also do as they wish in a civil manner.
As for Muslims, there is no evidence of any significant threat to them. What some Muslims are asking for is special treatment such that their theology/ideology is beyond criticism. It’s a power play, nothing more.
They must be made to realize that no one and no idea is beyond civil criticism in a liberal society. Mohammad and his book are fair game to criticize, draw cartoons about, mock, and ridicule. Christians put up with all these things each week, and yet we remain peaceable. Ever watch South Park, Robot Chicken or a number of other TV shows? Nasty anti-Christian stuff in there, but hey, its part of living in a society with numerous belief systems. I think Jesus and the Bible will be loved long after these shows are but dust. So no worries.
Muslims should get over it and just start being good Canadian citizens. Respect is earned. If Muslims want respect, then earn it through good works, not through pathetic attempts to avoid criticism of their belief system. Grow up folks, your not in Saudi Arabia anymore.
