The Sound Of Settled Science

As I was saying, how much colder would you like it to be?

“Global warming will stop until at least 2015 because of natural variations in the climate, scientists have said. Researchers studying long-term changes in sea temperatures said they now expect a “lull” for up to a decade while natural variations in climate cancel out the increases caused by man-made greenhouse gas emissions. The average temperature of the sea around Europe and North America is expected to cool slightly over the decade while the tropical Pacific remains unchanged. This would mean that the 0.3°C global average temperature rise which has been predicted for the next decade by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change may not happen, according to the paper published in the scientific journal Nature.”

A raindrop does not fall in this country without our news media invoking global warming. So how does this profession so keenly atuned to every huff and puff of climate science miss a peer reviewed study that calls it off?

  1. Because calling it off doesn’t fit their narrative (or was that answer bleedingly obvious?).

  2. Kate, I don’t want it to get any colder. As a hydro engineer, I live and breathe climate and all the evidence points to a severe cooling period coming up.
Keep up those carbon emissions, folks. There’s no evidence that they help, but they can’t do any harm

  3. Goodness gracious Kate, that would be calling authorities, who have invested their professional lives, doctorates, financial interests, etc. into question.
Besides the MSM will have a hard time flogging the latest crisis which will kill us all, like the latest apocalyptic blockbuster movie.
Disaster sells ratings, and advertising revenue.
Besides if they are huffing and puffing the likely hood is they are exhaling CO2; the dreaded greenhouse gas which forests use to produce O2.
Reducing CO2 might cause forests to grow slower which is very ‘ungreen’. Oh for shame!!
Kate you will just have to pant harder and the Prince Albert model forests will grow faster.

  4. How much colder?
Well, my 3hp two stroke,”Eskimo” ice auger gets put away ,way too early, and I’ve always wanted to set up in the middle of Lake Ontario, instead of having to drive up north every weekend during the hardwater season.
    Ready to drill.

  5. Scientists, the ones who study the climate trends in depth and have been for decades, are putting the facts out. Gotta be rather tough on Gore and Bugs Suzuki. Their settled and absolute scientific rhetoric is now being debunked and the proof is there.
Don’t mind the rain, it’s the white rain coming down in May that’s troubling. Anyone remember the excitement about acid rain? Any of that coming down?

  6. Not calls it off…
You and many others have been putting data in the forefront, data that says the world is not warming right now.
I think this is just a bunch of people trying to save face (and jobs) for, “Global warming will stop until at least 2015”, about 8-10 years… by that time most of the well paid scientists will be almost ready to retire, and in a decade who cares or even remembers if we were wrong back then. (rattle off 5 prominent scientists who supported global cooling back when? don’t peek in research… see)
By saying atleast 2015, they basically agree with your current data… and state its irrelevance in the long term. You are still therefore a climate change denier… and you won’t be able to prove the correctness of your statements for years… as long as the media rehashes this story.
    bummer huh?

  7. I wonder if The Weather Network will mention this as part of its endless prattle about climate change? Silly question. This will be a major face saver for the warmmongers, particularly because i think many of them have begun to doubt the theory, but didn’t want to admit it.

  8. “A lull”
A cute way of saying “we’re wrong, but we’re hoping you suckers won’t notice too much”

  9. We need a new term for the AGW supporters. I favour something like “leeches”, after the middle-ages doctors who would prescribe leeches for everything.
    Jaundice? Apply leeches.
    Consumptive fever? Apply leeches.
    Stomach pains? Apply leeches.
Pale complexion from too many leeches? Apply leeches.

  10. So how much do we worry about a manmade effect that can be washed out by natural variation.
It raises the question of was the warming that we did see, and years like 1998, largely natural variation that may have had some manmade component in it? So all warming is manmade but any cooling is nature?
Just how much colder would it have been if Kyoto had been in full force, and how often do these cold thingies happen, and how many lives and crops have we saved by it being a little warmer right now….maybe that better be factored into the equation….or maybe we just dont know and our effect is only at the margins and doesnt matter a whole lot.
You conserve energy for productivity and cost reasons. You eliminate harmful gases for clean environment reasons (not fouling the nest). These are all rational and reasonable things to do. GHG mania, while remaining unproven is irrational…I would like to say unhuman but sadly mania’s like this are too human and too common a tale to dismiss. Its the rational side of our human nature that needs to take precedence here.
GHG’s may cause some warming, but clearly right now it isnt the runaway all encompassing crisis we were led to believe. My concern would be that if there is an effect the cassandra’s of kyoto have blown all credibility.
Let the scientists do their job without and agenda and let the data speak, then maybe in 10 years we will have a really good idea about things. Given that the disaster is apparently off till at least 2015 we might just have the time.

  11. When in doubt, stall.
Research grants should still be in place by 2015.
How many people are actually making a living off this propoganda machine?

  12. What’s left for Gore, other than to take credit for it, like the internet. Wait for it.

  13. The critical point in Kate’s posting is her question:
“A raindrop does not fall in this country without our news media invoking global warming. So how does this profession so keenly attuned to every huff and puff of climate science miss a peer reviewed study that calls it off?” Want to bet that there is virtually no mention of cooling in MSM? The media has become one with the AGW propaganda machine — I am not sure why. The “denier” position (which increasingly looks like the only rational position) has been stifled in both political rhetoric and the media. Thoughtful and objective media coverage of this issue has been non-existent. In Canada, AGW has been a stick with which leftists and media have used to beat up on Conservatives. I don’t know what it will take to get people back on track. If you read Michael Crichton’s essay which sites previous examples of total social nuttiness, a major social upheaval is sometimes necessary before the myths disappear. Sometimes it’s been wars. Food shortages might be it this time.

  14. first it was global warming then it was climate change. maybe now it will be know as climate recession. LOL.

  15. Could somebody please post in here a graph of the CO2 increasing in the atmosphere since the 1950s?
And then ask the global warming cranks why the earthly temperature is not increasing in lock step with it.
The whole argument on anthropogenic global warming has been based on a direct connection between CO2 and the temperature since day one.
    Deniers 1
    AGW Fearmongers 0

  16. SYF asked (rhetorically, I know): “How many people are actually making a living off this propaganda machine?”
    ALL of them.
Which means as soon as they get over the speed bump of switching from immanent hot desert to immanent frozen desert, my truck will still be to blame. Count on it.

  17. Outstanding, Spike. “Climate recession” might just catch on.

  18. I blame Unca Mo. That creepy wart from Manitoba had a Puffin scam to get billions of ‘carbon credit’ $$ from the taxpayers so we could finance our own demise as independant people. Mo wanted us all living in ‘cells for humanity’, working for his ‘elitist Bolsheviks’ for free as part of a Glob al gulag (the new spinners call it a village – Bolsheviks always did have cute names for gulags). The Glob Al crowd will try to keep a lid on this until they figure out how to attempt to force feed us another pile of baloney. It will entertaining to watch the msm spinning on all fours; attempting to prove sda wrong – once again!
Msm is, of course way out of their depth when they take on sda. I already have my beer and popcorn and cheap smokes – ready for the show!
Thank-you Kate for being on top of this issue from day one. Bravo!

  19. Very interesting that they expect the “lull” to last 10 years. That means it should be kicking in again right about the same time as the next solar cycle starts.

  20. I googled results for “climate recession” … results are still under 500 but I can see this catching on like a mass public breastfeeding…
kinda like it’s funny at first, and then your friends find out you ride a moped to work, so it’s not funny anymore.

  21. stephen — we have no time, remember sealevel was to rise 5 meters by 2012 barely 4 years away. NewYork was going to be drowned. by 2020 , they predicted up to 80% of all humanity would be dead from global warming.
first its 500ducks, then its 5 billion people,
the schill of the MSM is getting even too ridiculous for them to believe it themselves.

  22. best spin is from the BBC, heavily invested in AGW Alarmism . . . .
“Richard Black’s article in the BBC, Keenlyside says:
One message from our study is that in the short term, you can see changes in the global mean temperature that you might not expect given the reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).”
The way I translate that it means “Our previous models were bogus and although $trillions of dollars of public policy spending has been based on those models and have been wasted, you can trust us that our new model works”
Let the music begin for the “Warmonger Two Step Shuffle, Duck & Jive”

  23. “how does this profession so keenly atuned to every huff and puff of climate science miss a peer reviewed study that calls it off?”
    Er…on purpose?

  24. Just because it’s getting colder is no reason to stop believing the world is getting warmer. One is a mere thermometer; the other, Science.

  25. How about we slash our consumption, not out of fear of Armageddon, but simply out of consideration for our progeny and neighbors?

  26. do you mean we can actually now get back to true enviromental issues like not decimating our forests, polluting our air and water, stop converting food crops to fuel…… nah lets keep on with eradicating that incredible poison CO2… must stop breathing out…..crap did it again…..and again
    crunchy con

  27. “Just because it’s getting colder is no reason to stop believing the world is getting warmer.”
    Huh???
I think Richard might have a fever, where’s that thermometer?

  28. GW might be all about discrediting enviromentalists, wouldnt some cigar smoking capitalists cook up something like that.I’m serious

  29. Energy consumption is a different twist….it has nothing to do with GHG. An interesting view is that when you look at per captia energy usage and graph it against GDP per capita you get an interesting result.
Based on a result of unit of energy used to produce GDP the US is most productive…and not surprisingly the most effecient producer of GDP gets the most energy, as it should.
So you can complain about “hogging energy” but upsetting the balance and forcing more energy to others would be wasting it (even if you use less.
One of the truisms, the wealthier a country the more environmenally friendly it is or more importantly the poorer a country is the more it pollutes. Undercutting wealth creation undercuts the environmental agenda, but you need to get the equation in the right order wealth=clean environment not the other way around.
As for Richard B’s comment. You are correct because it is cooling doesnt mean there isnt an overall warming trend, mind you there has been an overall warming trend for at least 5,000 years.
Problem is AGW orthodoxy says there is a tight correlation between CO2 and temperature increase. And that we are in danger of runaway heating. So once again AGW orthodoxy now needs to be rewritten to accomodate yet another exception.
The effect may be real, AGW, but it isnt proven yet. Please take the next 10 years to figure out how things work, we really dont know and the changes being requested are ideological at worst and well meaning but misguided at best.
If there was such a tight correlation then this shouldnt be happening, and the fact that it is happening means that AGW theory now needs to accept the fact that there are forcings that are much more powerful than CO2 buildup, a significant signifcant change from before.
An Inconvenient Truth will be found to be the Piltdown Man of documentary’s. Or perhaps we should just refer to it and AGW as an equivalent of the South Sea Bubble, or the Internet Bubble, the waves of UFO sightings or Beatlemania.
Nothing wrong with being a conservationist or being conciouss of what is put into our bodies our air or our environment….but to leverage unporven theories into global treaties and massive wealth transfers and a new form of social control and regulation is insane.
Lets do what has gotten us here so far, study it, test it and dispassionately analyse how our world works, what is natural and what is manmade. Remeber we, as a species, used to throw virgins in volcanoes to appease the gods because the ground trembled, or sacrifice animals to appease appease the gods.
Sackcloth and ashes wrapped on human progress doesnt change anything. Prove it and we’ll deal with it.

  30. Just because your little space on Earth is colder, doesn’t mean that it can’t be explained by God being angry with your pitiable butt. The Science of obscuring Religion.
It is still unseasonably warm on the East Coast.
The Ocean is rising, the shorefront remains only because of sea walls, and my neighbors have lost up to whole city sized building lots.
Yet, the Kate person continues to deny, deny, deny.
Who pays her to blog such drivel??
From the Land of the Rising Sun, and Ocean.
    Hugger

  31. Greg’s neighbours have lost “whole city sized building lots” on the east coast.
East coast of what continent on which planet, Greg?

  32. There is a more serious crisis we are soon to face.
When vehicles move east to west, the wheels push the ground west to east, and the net effect is that this changes the earth’s rotation. This will have an adverse effect on the climate. We don’t know how yet, but I could draw graphs for you, and the graphs will show that it will be bad, and we know this because I am a scientist.
Also, construction projects remove earth from the ground, while lightens the planet, and this will also affect everything. We don’t know how, but it will be bad, and we expect it someone time around the end of the Mayan calendar. This is all easily proven by making a Powerpoint presentation and calling my stupid opponents “deniers”.
Some “scientists” have disagreed with me in public, but they either work for car companies, contractors building one-way eastbound roads, or Caterpillar tractors, so they are all liars.

  33. Now that there is a lull, the green taxes will have a chance to really pile up so that when the real global warming comes, we will have the money to buy it off.
    Right?

  34. The recantations are already flowing in so to speak. Faster than speedy Gonzalez heading for the northern border.
To soften the blow these theories will slowly die out of fashion by just not mentioning them while the press gently modified them. In the long run its done to save some reputations. They will retreat with head held high while still babbling nonsense. Trying to have it both ways. To late. The 70’s are gone welcome to the WEB.
Most sane people knew all along this has been a scam since Global cooling in the 70’s was embraced. Than turned into a scientific “Charlie the Tuna”. Fortunately for real scientists of the time, they didn’t have the Al Gore media feeding frenzy to immortalize every false statement than made by the fashion of the day crew. Nor the internet.
No way their getting out of this ponzi scam without a pound of flesh now. They dug out a weak canoe to paddle down this river of crap they helped create. The company they kept will now stain them with the same odor. But hey there is always a new generation along to pull another lie for money & fame.
Usually twins of the mother of Ignorance.

  35. “drivel”
Did hugger just use that word?
With the exception, of half of what you type being totally incomprehensible, your “look-at-me” crap aspires to reach “drivel” standards.
Put down the stones dude, you throw like a girl.

  36. I wonder how Daily Panic… er, I mean, Daily Planet is going to spin this — seems a single week can’t go by without that show talking about Climate Change And How We Must All Pull Together And Sacrifice To Stop It.

  37. I just finished reading the article in Nature in its entirely. Nowhere does is state the word “lull” as quoted in the link above, nor does it mention the year 2015. In fact the article doesn’t even state that global warming has stopped or will stop in any way for any length of time. What it does say is that climate predication models will try to take into account shorter-term climate variability for greater decadal forcasts, and shorter-term climate variability does not trump global warming.
Sorry to burst your bubble folks it’s still warming no matter how much you want to deny reality.
The deniers are getting pretty desperate.

  38. Hyoo at May 1, 2008 5:00 PM
Your logic is irrefutable. Also, imagine what would happen if:
    a) everyone on Earth jumped at the same moment, causing a lightened Earth to spin out of control (and us to land in different spots), or,
    b) we all held our breath for a minute, resulting in a massive
downturn in C02 emissions, followed by a rapid, catastrophic burst
    c) all Canadians breathed in facing north and breathed out facing south — all our C02 emissions would head down to the USA causing cars to stall, clocks to stop running, and all VCRs to start flashing 12:00

  39. I’m surprised that I’m the first one to say this. All of the aforementioned Envioro’s and Lefties couldn’t give a flying flute about data and reports. This is about one thing and one thing only: a reallocation of resources. For years now “deniers” have been concerned about the rising cost of food due to the increased demand from population and bio-fuels, and the effect it will have on Africans. We have also been concerned about good environmental programs that have been reduced or cut because of the reallocation of funds towards GW initiatives. Now the Lefties will claim “world hunger” as their own cause and will blame Big Oil, White male Christians, S.Harper and J.McCain (Billery and Barak are finished). It doesn’t matter that we’ve been concerned about these issues, or that they are partially responsible for rising food costs. They were not listening, they were just reciting rhetoric. They didn’t even hear a year ago at their own Live Earth concert in Africa when an African leader stated something along the lines of “this concert is nice, but we can’t worry about bogus problems, we need to feed our people”.
I’m taking bets on this one.

  40. Global warming will stop until at least 2015 because of natural variations in the climate
Why is it natural when it stops but man made the rest of the time???!!!

  41. GE loves the idea of GW due to water profits. [ The ME is their *Gold Mine* ]
WHEN Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary-general, was asked to ponder the future of the world before an audience of powerful businessmen and politicians, at a meeting in Switzerland earlier this year, he could have chosen any topic he liked.
What he focused on was both a hoary old favourite, and a newly popular preoccupation, of debates on world affairs: the rising risk of wars over fresh water, as populations increase and the world gets drier.

Is that why GE paid 750 Million$ for fresh water purification technology patents from a McGill university graduate scientist?
Just think; GE need not hire any staff, build any plant or do anything very strenuous at all. They merely have to collect royalties from all those desperate groups who do all the hard work of building clean water plants for their ever increasing water needs.
Just as Microsoft became wealthy collecting royalties from Computer makers who needed their machines to run on *Windows* and Software firms who had to have *Windows* compatibility.
Chevron got patents on large format Nickel Hydride batteries, [ for electric car and trucks ], when they took over Texaco, forcing Panasonic to close off American LF Ni-Hyd battery production.
Water is the lifeblood of cities like San Diego, LA, and Phoenix. We were nomadic at one time and could move to the fresh water supply. Not today.

Though most privatizations so for have been in Asia, Africa and Latin America, top executives of the big three companies told CBC Radio that they plan to expand next in two areas – China and North America.

I live in Saint John New Brunswick. I’m 54 years old and the only loss of shoreline we’ve had has been due to erosion. The cottage my parents bought when I was a kid still has a lot of sand between it and the waves. Where hugger is from beats me.

  43. Libforlife said: “What it does say is that climate predication [sic] models will try to take into account shorter-term climate variability for greater decadal forcasts, … Sorry to burst your bubble folks it’s still warming no matter how much you want to deny reality.”
Come ON, how many times do we have to tell you lefties that forecast models are not reality? (And of course, they also suck because of a bunch of reasons I’ve already said on this site, so I won’t bother.)

  44. Hugger: The ocean has risen near yor place? Are you really making that statement for real?
