Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Why Israel can’t survive.
http://www.macleans.ca/world/global/article.jsp?content=20080423_11237_11237
There is an article in this week’s Macleans about the demographic challenge facing Israel. The fact that in the territories between Jordan and the mediterranean sea (under Israel military control) arabs will soon be the majority.
That article addresses the same concerns that Mark Steyn raised 2 years ago about Europe in the same magazine.
Caught the article about the judge firing the weapon on the Nation Newswatch site. It was highlighted by a graphic showing a automatic pistol and the heading was something along the lines of “Judge discharges firearm in court”. That was this morning it has since been removed and now I’ve just learned that it was a BB gun. Trust the media to label a BB gun as a firearm.
In the 1980’s in Britain the left had melted into an unsightly puddle. An educated member of a Marxist faction and a fellow who’d been working as a journalist on Fleet Street but was now looking for more political activism in his life decided to try to pump some life into the po-faced beast that was the far left so they joined together with a bandy collective of far-left travelers — Maoists, Communists, Marxists, Trotskyites, revolutionary socialists, radical feminists and so on — in an attempt to launch a credible, mass-market left-wing newspaper.
It was called “News On Sunday”. The unprecedented, ambitious venture, well-funded, in large part by unions, fell apart comically within two months for reasons that are openly, amusingly apparent in Vanessa Engle’s roundly entertaining documentary “Lefties”. David Thompason has kindly posted this must-see documentary in six short parts on one thread. It loads well. (Handy tip: although it’s not necessary at all, it’s well worth it to hit his paypal for three British pounds — five something Canadian — before you watch, as this prevents the film from getting jammed in the sprockets and melting onscreen.)
For those who watch the far left out of one calloused eye with a mixture of amusement, trepidation and schadenfreude, Engle’s film is a goldmine that will leave you with a renewed interest in…voting. In one brief and memorable segment a former reporter at News On Sunday recalls “I remember just before the paper launched, when you might expect everybody to be working to get it out — you know, deadlines, these great stories we’re going to run — (but) the office was half empty…I thought, ‘hmm, this is interesting, I wonder where everyone’s gone? (Turns out) everybody was sent off on a deafness awareness course….just before, you know, we were about to launch a paper. So I said to one of the people, I said, ‘what’s a deafness awareness course?’ And…they walked around the streets of Manchester with earplugs. I thought, well, okay, well…”
I highly recommend “Lefties” to all of Kate’s readers and commenters, particularly our leftist brotheren and sisteren…enen, who may well recognize themselves with a fond chuckle, only to realize, horror-struck, that that one single chuckle means they can never go back.

A former national director for the New Democratic Party says the Tory transactions sounds like normal practice that’s been followed by all parties for decades.
Robin Sears, the NDP’s national director from 1974 to 1981, says central parties have always transferred money to help out local candidates and they’ve always asked local candidates to help pay a share of national advertising.
“I have a hard time understanding what it is, beyond what everybody’s always done, that (the Tories) are being accused of here,” Sears said in an interview.
“To claim that national and local expenditures were always rigorously divided and it was a very clear definition of what fell into which camp, it’s just bullshit.”
In an odd twist, Sears has since become a spokesman for prime minister Brian Mulroney concerning the former prime minister’s dealings with businessman Karlheinz Schreiber.
Sears said he’s not familiar with the details of the current election spending controversy. But he said it doesn’t sound much different from the regional ad packages that all parties have produced during campaigns for years, wherein national ads are paid for by groups of candidates in a region, whose names are identified in microscopic type at the bottom of the ad. ”

The fastest-growing faith in America is no faith at all. And now some atheists think they need a church.
It seems unlikely that many of the 850 or so people at the Society for Ethical Culture on a recent Saturday night believed that God was still extant. But evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, author of The God Delusion and possibly the most famous atheist in the world, was not taking any chances. He gave a PowerPoint presentation driving home that religion does not meet any of the standards of basic scientific inquiry, before casually flicking away a few of His last crutches. Doesnât God provide people some solace? asked an audience member. âIsnât that a little childish?â Dawkins replied. âJust because something is comforting doesnât mean itâs true.â Then someone asked about death, and Dawkins quoted Mark Twain: âI do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born.â
The room erupted in loud applause. God had definitely left the buildingâif he were ever here at all. Dawkins and his colleagues had helped to produce a kind of atheist big bang, a new beginning. But what kind of new structures might evolve?
The Society for Ethical Culture was formed in 1877, eighteen years after Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species and made the religious universe wobble on its axis. But godlessness can be a little scary, even for an atheist. Ethical Cultureâs imposing 1910 edifice on Central Park speaks to its patronsâ wealth, as well as their concern that society might fall apart if it didnât have a church. But for all the grandeur of its secular cathedral, Ethical Culture peaked at maybe 6,000 members, with only about 3,000 today.
Now, once again, nonbelievers have a fresh sense of mission. The fastest-growing faith in the country is no faith at all.”

(Via CSP) Con Coughlin, Real reason Syrian base was wiped off the map
Piece by piece, the intelligence jigsaw puzzle concerning Israel’s air strike on a top-secret military site in northern Syria last September is finally taking shape. When a squadron of Israeli F-15 fighter-bombers destroyed a hitherto unknown Syrian military facility at Dayr as-Zawr, close to the country’s north-eastern border with Turkey, there was much speculation that Israel had staged a repeat of its 1981 mission against Iraq’s Osirak nuclear facility, which thwarted Saddam Hussein’s ambition to acquire a nuclear weapons arsenal…
The other reason the Israelis want to take a back seat is that they are keen not to reveal too much detail about the technical aspects of the air strike, which is regarded as the most sophisticated operation by the Israeli air force since Osirak. To carry out the attack undetected, the fighter-bombers had to be fitted with equipment that extended their bombing range, while the pilots also had to contend with the challenge of penetrating Syria’s state-of-the-art, Russian-built air defence systems. The mission was so successful that the first that the Syrians knew of the attack was when their Turkish neighbours reported that the bombers had returned safely to their base in northern Israel.

“A home-grown ‘Champion of Islam'”
(National Post)
TORONTO — Naeem Muhammad Khan wants everyone to “Support Our Troops,” but he’s not talking about the Canadian Forces in Kandahar.
From his apartment in Toronto, Mr. Khan has been posting messages on the Internet calling Osama bin Laden a “hero” and “champion of Islam.”
The 23-year-old fundamentalist’s on-line logo combines the black Taliban flag and the outline of an AK-47 above the Support Our Troops slogan.
Between sips of iced coffee at Tim Hortons, Mr. Khan explained that he is a supporter of the Taliban, as well as other armed Islamic groups.
“‘Support our Troops’ means supporting the mujahideen [Muslim soldiers of God] who are fighting for their freedom and rights against illegal occupation in many, many places over the world like Afghanistan, Iraq, Chechnya, Kashmir, Palestine and Somalia,” he said later in an e-mail.
Views like these are becoming increasingly common in Western countries, Canada included, and they are worrying to governments concerned about radicalism and violence.
Mr. Khan is an Islamist, not a terrorist, but what most disturbs moderate Muslims like Tahir Gora are his harsh comments about those who do not subscribe to fundamentalist beliefs.
In his online postings, Mr. Khan calls Tarek Fatah, Irshad Manji and other moderates “apostates” and says that under Islamic law the punishment for apostasy is death. The same goes for those who insult Islam.

“PM outlines how Canada’s balanced economic plan will deliver long-term prosperity for Quebec
24 April 2008
Laval, Quebec
In an economic speech to the Laval Chamber of Commerce and Industry today, Prime Minister Stephen Harper outlined how the federal governmentâs balanced approach to fiscal policy will address short-term economic challenges and deliver long-term prosperity for Quebec. The Prime Minister noted that over the course of three budgets and two economic statements introduced by the Government and passed by Parliament, roughly half the fiscal allocations for the five years between 2006 and 2010 have gone to tax reduction, with the remainder evenly split between debt pay down and new spending.
“Our government believes in lower taxes, less debt and carefully targeted assistance that helps workers, families, communities and businesses build a better future. We do not believe in raising the GST, spending recklessly and running deficits. We are responding to short-term economic challenges and we are planning for long-term prosperity. More than anything, these are the things we are focused on. Unlike our opponents, we donât want to rekindle the old battles of separatists and centralists. They are great champions of these positions â but itâs not our fightâ, said Prime Minister Harper.”

Where’s the HRC indeed! Read Mark Steyn’s excellent analysis of the HRC in Macleans.
http://www.macleans.ca
Then click on Mark Steyn’s column on the right side.
He notes that the oft-repeated argument that ‘hateful words’ lead to ‘hateful actions’, ie, visions of the Holocaust, is invalid.
He writes: “Isn’t it obvious that in the case of Adolf Hitler, “hateful words” led to “unspeakable crimes”? This argument is offered routinely: if only there’d been “reasonable limits on the expression of hatred” 70 years ago, the Holocaust might have been prevented.
There’s just one teensy-weensy problem with it: pre-Nazi Germany had such “reasonable limits.” Indeed, the Weimar Republic was a veritable proto-Trudeaupia. As Alan Borovoy, Canada’s leading civil libertarian, put it:
“Remarkably, pre-Hitler Germany had laws very much like the Canadian anti-hate law. Moreover, those laws were enforced with some vigour. During the 15 years before Hitler came to power, there were more than 200 prosecutions based on anti-Semitic speech. And, in the opinion of the leading Jewish organization of that era, no more than 10 per cent of the cases were mishandled by the authorities. As subsequent history so painfully testifies, this type of legislation proved ineffectual on the one occasion when there was a real argument for it.”
“The idea that “hate speech” led to the Holocaust is seductive because it’s easy: if only we ban hateful speech, then there will be no hateful acts. But, as professor Anuj C. Desai of the University of Wisconsin Law School points out, “Biased speech has been around since history began. As a logical matter, then, it is no more helpful to say that anti-Semitic speech caused the Holocaust than to say organized government caused it, or, for that matter, to say that oxygen caused it. All were necessary ingredients, but all have been present in every historical epoch in every country in the world.”
The reductio ad Hitlerum is the laziest form of argument, so it’s no surprise to find the defenders of the ever-more-intrusive “human rights” enforcers taking refuge in it. But it stands history on its head. Most of us have a vague understanding that Hitler used the burning of the Reichstag in February 1933 as a pretext to “seize” dictatorial powers. But, in fact, he didn’t “seize” anything because he didn’t need to. He merely invoked Article 48 of the Weimar Republic’s constitution, allowing the state, in the interests of the greater good, to set â what’s the phrase? â “reasonable limits” on freedom of the press, freedom of expression, freedom of association, freedom from unlawful search and seizure and surveillance of postal and electronic communications. The Nazis didn’t invent a dictatorship out of whole cloth. They merely took advantage of the illiberal provisions of a supposedly liberal constitution.
Oh, and by the way, almost all those powers the Nazis “seized” the morning after the Reichstag fire, the “human rights” commissions already have. In the name of cracking down on “hate,” Canada’s “human rights” apparatchiks can enter your premises without a warrant and remove any relevant “document or thing” (as the relevant Ontario legislation puts it) for as long as they want it. And without anybody burning the House of Commons or even the Senate.”
Steyn continues: “I quote from “Concepts Of Race And Racism And Implications For OHRC Policy” as published on the OHRC website:
“The denial of racism used by so many whites in positions of authority ranging from the supervisor in a work place to the chief of Police and ministers of government must be understood for what it is: an example of White hegemonic power over those considered ‘other.’ ”
“Got that? Your denial of racism merely confirms your racism â because simply by being a “White hegemon” (like Barbara Hall or Jennifer Lynch) you wield racist power. The author, Frances Henry, cites the thinking of “modern neo-Marxist theorists” as if these are serious views that persons of influence in Canada’s “human rights” establishment ought to be taking into account, rather than just the latest variant of an ideology that’s led to the deaths of millions in Russia, China and everywhere else it’s been put into practice. ”
So- our new HRCs are modelled after Marxism-Leninism. Remember, a key factor of the Canadian HRCs is that they totally, completely, reject the right and the ability of Canadians – to think. We are too dumb to Reason, to think, to make up our own minds about the validity of what we read, hear and think. Our bureaucrats – these appointed, unaccountable, elitist bureaucrats – they self-define themselves alone as having this ‘innate capacity to think’.
