Increased Hurricane Losses Due to More People, Wealth Along Coastlines, Not Stronger Storms, New Study Says
A team of scientists have found that the economic damages from hurricanes have increased in the U.S. over time due to greater population, infrastructure, and wealth on the U.S. coastlines, and not to any spike in the number or intensity of hurricanes.
“We found that although some decades were quieter and less damaging in the U.S. and others had more land-falling hurricanes and more damage, the economic costs of land-falling hurricanes have steadily increased over time,” said Chris Landsea, one of the researchers as well as the science and operations officer at NOAA’s National Hurricane Center in Miami. “There is nothing in the U.S. hurricane damage record that indicates global warming has caused a significant increase in destruction along our coasts.”

Well, those of us who wondered about the decision to build New Orleans below Lake Pontchartrain and Gulf Coast cities right along the shore now have a formal study (although we knew before) that makes us able to say:
DUH.
When Fascism comes to America, it will come wrapped in the swaddling of Oprah and Osama-er-Obama’s Feel-Good platitudes and carrying the Holy Writ of the Kyoto Protocol.
Ahh, but please be aware that in the past Dr. Landsea has expressed similar skeptical and heretical thoughts. Clearly his opinion can not be trusted.
I hope you’re not right Doug although I’ve had the same thoughts. Looking ahead, are we actually headed to having a Department of Weather Management? That is after all what the Kyoto types seem to think they can do, or con us into thinking they can. Either way.
I suppose what scares me more is the thought that these folks are actually serious about believing they can take the wheel of good ship Earth and steer it better than whatever forces do now. Too bizarre.
Well just file that under NoSH*tSherlock…………
Pop over to Wattsupwiththat.
Even the sources of fear are having a problem denying the facts.
Hurricanes?
What hurricanes? Wasn’t last season supposed to be another record year of devastation?
Oops! Someone please hack into their database and update the records before we skeptics notice.
What’s past is prologue!
Imagine that! You build more industry/housing around and below floodplains and hurricane areas, and the damage costs rise! Nah. That can be right. The Goracle hasn’t lost a mansion yet,or is that just because he is a true believer in the Kyoto Kult, and was therefore spared by Mother Gaia?
but, but, but . . . Al Gore says it is all caused by Global Warming . . . . and he’s a politician and they never, ever lie.
Weather will be Weather. As population grows and settles in Hurricane, Tornado, and Typhoon paths, there will be devistation. The MSM will report that as Climate change.
The Gores and Suzukis would like you to believe that weather catastrophes are a fault of our life styles, but
ultimately the worlds climate as we know it is controlled by the sun…. The IPCC models disregard the Sun as a factor.
If mankind eliminated all CO2 emissions from all Electrical generation and transportation….. it wouldn’t amount to one Iota of a change to the Global transitions that we apparently are recording today.
The Global Climate will continue to change as it has always done, regardless of what we do.
But if it makes you feel better, we can use Kyotoo to re-distribute the worlds wealth… by the way this is what Kyoto is all about.
What we do as a civilization is in-consequential to global warming. The planet is starting to cool now because of the Sun…..
So how does CO2 impact ust….Pretty insignifiacnt.
So when BC are paying a carbon tax to stop Global warming.. I geuss they can say they were sucessful in 5-10 years as the world will cool and it will be because of their Carbon tax….
Not
Along with “greater population, infrastructure, and wealth on the U.S. coastlines”, there is one other factor in the increase in the costs of hurricane damage over time, and that is simple inflation.
A house built in the 1950s for $15,000 might take $300,000 to replace today, hurricanes or no hurricanes.
I second that “well, DUH!!” You could probably say the same thing about tornadoes. Same goes for Suzuki’s tiresome old rant about Canadians and our “excessive” fossil fuel consumption. Try living in Canada through winters like this on were in now without consuming lots of the stuff.
No word on changes in the building code either, I take it? Its easy to build a house that’s hurricane proof, but it surpasses the building code in a lot of jurisdictions so they don’t do it.
And gee, wasn’t there a building boom the last ten years?
I second Louise’s seconding of DUH!
Careful you may cause a disruption in the production of taxpayer funded FIMA crystal meth production trailers along the gulf coast!
And check out David Warren’s article from Feb 6th: http://davidwarrenonline.com/index.php?id=845 entitled “Mad Vanities”.
Seems a couple of bright boys in Japan have crunched some numbers, and they conclude that meeting the G8’s goal of a 50% reduction in CO2 by 2050 will require cutting the North American economy by 88% (85% for Japan and 83% for Europe).
Sad part is, these guys seem to think it’s achievable …..
So what ever became of all thoose hurricanes we were suppost to be have happening in 2006 and 2007 according to AL GORE and the greenfreaks from grenpeace we were going to have hurricanes that would make KATRINA look like a summer breeze. THIS JUST PROVES GORE AND THE GREENS ARE A BUNCH OF LYING IDIOTS SQUAWK SQUAWK
“Sad part is, these guys seem to think it’s achievable …..”
Not achievable, just saleable to a clueless world populace. Cowards the lot.
Watched and heard on the radio some of the Alberta provincial election debate. Repeated bleating about “we need to do this and that to stop CO2, blah blah blah” makes me want to puke. For once I wish I could see a politician get some intestinal fortitude and just say, “Stop it with this the world is gonna burn up BS and go do some research on why this is a non-existent problem.”
Now that would be a guy or gal I would not be so cynical about!
confirmation bias.
By the way, I’ll preempt the inevitable “you guys are teh worstest confirmation biasers EVAR!11!! Worse than us!!!11!!!!” by noting that this does not a valid counterargument make.
“A different Doug”, I read that article too and noted that one of them (the Japanese authors of the study) said that in such a completely collapsed economy everyone will need to ride bicycles again. But, what they failed to mention is where one would ride their bicycle to.

I don’t know if we have a Department of Weather Management but I have received communications from Mr. Paul Eggington, Director of Climate Change for Canada.

Vanity thy name is IPCC…
My only question is, if they were really able to control the climate, who decides what temperature to set the thermostat at?
Did you catch the other link in that website?
http://wattsupwiththat.wordpress.com/2008/02/19/january-2008-4-sources-say-globally-cooler-in-the-past-12-months/
“For all four metrics the global average ∆T for January 2007 to January 2008 is: – 0.6405°C
This represents an average between the two lower troposphere satellite metrics (RSS and UAH) and the two land-ocean metrics (GISS and HadCRUT). While some may argue that they are not compatible data-sets, since they are derived by different methods (Satellite -Microwave Sounder Unit and direct surface temperature measurements) I would argue that the average of these four metrics is a measure of temperature, nearest where we live, the surface and near surface atmosphere.”
In other words, the drop by .6 C. degrees in the last 12 months gives back almost all of the global warming that caused the panic in the first place!
THE ICE AGE IS COMING!!!! WE’RE ALL GONNA FREEZE!!!!!
OH THE HUMANITY!!!!
(Side note to self – Consider investing in Florida Real Estate now, at the bottom of the market)
Is the Arctic to warm to be considered a tourist destination in the winter?
LJ: ” … who decides what temperature to set the thermostat at?”
I would think that we would all agree that the temperature should allow the colorful butterflies year round and when we stick our bare feet into the grass it should feel cool.
“Department of Weather Management” — that’s funny. I can see Stephane Dion giving his thirty second closing statement in the last pre-election debate:
“Hiff hue foat fer me, hi will mennich da wedder ombey-aff of all Kenna-DJENse.”
BTW, Kate, congratulations on getting mentioned at Mike Brock’s blog. The guy really put his neck on the line to do that, in light of your, well, crassness and all, but at least he had the guts to admit it.
Say, can I take you out to Mr Sub for dinner? I’ll purchase the soft drinks…

Sounds good to me, and they’re still not able to grow oats and barley in Greenland like they could 1000 years ago. I’d be willing to donate to a fund to supply Suzuki with a pan flute, goat skin, and a herd of goats.

It is achievable and will be achieved, for the simple reason fossil fuels will be past peak production by then (oil first, then nat gas, then coal). With less of the stuff to burn, you get less CO2.
It’s amazing none of those bright lights in the AGW crowd seem to acknowledge that.
As for reducing the economy by 88%, this is nonsense. By then we’ll have transitioned to non-fossil energy sources.
This finding by NOAA also fits the US Hydrological study that found no unusual change in the flow rates of the river systems across the USA for the last 100 years.
Flowrates increase and decrease due to local conditions only.
And if the rivers are influenced by anything, it has been shown that the flowrates change according to the sunspot cycle.
Now isn’t that funny?
I wonder if Suzuki will like being put in an environmentally friendly jail where he has to supply his own heating and get his own water?
And catch his own bugs to eat.
I made the moon disappear the other night, gimme enough money and I can control the weather too – or at least make you think I can. The Pharoah’s knew how to work a dumb crowd, isn’t it nice to know some things never change…
Note to self: places NOT to build a house.
Riverbank.
Shoreline of any kind.
On top of active fault lines.
Edges of cliffs.
Next to an active volcano.
It is wander if the liberal government of the lotus land read any of this. They seem to be on the tax this, tax some more, tax maximum trip. They give a spiel about reducing other taxes, sort of mirror room maze, now you see it, now you don’t.
The demagoguery in the land of lotus eaters is just crushing, though it seems the lotus eaters themselves seem to be something akin to masochists.
For reasons unknown to me, the U.S. Gov’t continues year after year in disaster prone areas like California and U.S southeast Atlantic coastal areas to fund disater relief – for goodness sake stop!
LOve that new name for motive fuel taxes in B.C. that the Greenies all want emulated – seems we already pay Federal & Provincial gas taxes plus GST so I gueass anew name helps – anyway B.C. needs the cash to pay for the Olympic cost overruns!
the city of SanFrancisco is hiring “Climate PROTECTION Services” people for enviromatters. I guess the idea is people cant tell a mukluk from a sombrero.

time for an i told ya so.
Of course it helps when all the authors of the report are known right wing hacks….go check sourcewatch.org….Al Gore may be a fear mongerer to you, to the rest of the sane world, he is right. You keep living in your deluded world where humans and nature live in harmony….of course in your world, harmony means raping nature.
I had been told that this site is the premier blog of Canada….if this is the best, “god” have mercy on Canada.
