1. The Toronto Star
kicks off 2008 in style with an hilarious parody of leftwing thought processes replete with Harper-Bush comparisions and hand-wringing concern that an unnamed professor, Kevin Rudd and Bono don’t approve of “rogue-state” Canada because, since Harper “has hijacked our foreign policy” it’s not their “particular kind of Canada.” That the Left finally announces its disapproval of hijacking at least when committed by “neo-conservatives” probably constitutes the most amusing single line in the piece.
It’s so cleverly written that it could nearly pass as serious commentary in some circles.

2. Happened to suffer thru As It Happens on cbc radio last eve.The ever anti- CPC/US ‘host’ Carol Off had a Q&A contest with Paul Zed,Carolyn Bennett, and Lizzie May..complete with noisemakers to buzz in answers.Lizzie stated that her’s was a ‘George Bush look-alike dog’s chew toy’ This led to great hilarity amongst all the participants..host included.Much mocking of PMSH,Bush,Baird, and lots of sarcastic input from Off.What an absolute puke-fest..had to turn it off after few minutes,as totally partisan..no representation from any Cons.and a real love-fest between Lizzie/Libs.Way to wrap up another partisan yr.for the cbc.

“The footsoldiers in this alliance have been the grant-guzzling climate modelers and their Internationale, the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, whose collective scientific expertise is reverently invoked by all devotees of the Greenhouse fearmongers’ catechism. Aside from the fact that the graveyard of intellectual error is stuffed with the myriad tombstones of “overwhelming scientific consensus”, the IPCC has the usual army of functionaries and grant farmers, and the merest sprinkling of actual scientists with the prime qualification of being climatologists or atmospheric physicists.” […]

*A bit of background on this immense irrigation and afforestation plan::
“The Great Stalin Plan forecast five million hectares of trees to be
planted by 1955, almost twelve and a half million acres within seven
years. It was the grand finale of the Stalinist agricultural campaigns;
in one large rush cold dry Russia was to be made a land of warm moist
weather. Periodic crop failures, like that of 1946, were to become a dim
memory. Shostakovich put the whisper of life-giving leaves in a choral
symphony, ‘The Song of the Forests.’ Leonid Leonov and many lesser fellow
storytellers triumphed over nature by rustling their leaves in their
fictions. Why should they have doubted when the most eminent scientists
expressed uhnqualified approval? Sukachev, a world-renowned ecologist who
must have known that the Great Plan and the Lysenkoite method of planting
were noisy haste-makes-waste, pledged his support nevertheless. Thus he
kept his crucial posts as head of the Forestry Institute and chief editor
of the *Botanical Journal.* How much was spent on the Great Plan, whether
by the state or the farms, has never been revealed. We have only
scattered facts, such as the planting of almost one and a half million
hectares of trees on collective farms from 1948 through 1951, when the
campaign faltered and Sukachev got the signal he obviously had been
waiting for. In the *Botanical Journal* he was allowed to open a
discussion of Lysenko’s views of natural selection; that is, he was
allowed to attack the faith that justified the cluster planting of trees.”

4. A little good news to start the year:
Israeli scientists reveal the prostate-healing power of mushrooms
Chinese tradition refers to the reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) as ‘the lucky fungus’, for its powers in alleviating complaints such as arthritis, insomnia and chest tightness. And 2,000 years after its first use, the ancient remedy is still proving somewhat of a charm, after researchers from the University of Haifa announced their success in preliminary efforts to slow the growth of prostate cancer cells using reishi extracts.
The scientists, led by Dr Ben-Zion Zaidman of the university’s Institute for Evolution, found that molecules extracted from Ganoderma lucidum blocked the action of androgen – the male sex hormone – upon cancerous cells. Without intervention, said Zaidman, the hormone otherwise works as a chemical ‘switch’, stimulating the cells – especially in early stages of the disease – to multiply uncontrollably into tumor tissue…

5. Hey Kate,I did call cbc, during the last election campaign (Wpg)and bitched about the very ‘slanted’ coverage.I was fortunate enough to speak to a woman that totally agreed with me..I asked that my complaint be logged, and mentioned I was disgusted by cbc,and the waste of taxpayer’s money. The lady I talked to was in absolute agreement with all I said, even said to me,”I shouldn’t be saying this” I have also complained to crtc about a few issues.I am planning on ‘reporting’ this latest crap, will do so Wed.a.m. as not too likely there will be many around today.

6. “Harper revisits scene of successful campaign stunt to showcase GST cut” – Canadian Press (whatever that is)
“GST cut to five per cent not universally praised” – Canada.com
Both the CBC and CTV ran stories along these lines yesterday. Apparently, some have a problem with parties that do what they say they are going to do.
While I might prefer an income tax cut, this is what they said they’d do. Doing one does not preclude the other.

New York Times ^ | 1/1/07 | John tierney
In 2008, your television will bring you image after frightening image of natural havoc linked to global warming. You will be told that such bizarre weather must be a sign of dangerous climate change — and that these images are a mere preview of what’s in store unless we act quickly to cool the planet. I don’t know if disaster will come by flood or drought, hurricane or blizzard, fire or ice. But there’s bound to be some weird weather somewhere, and we will react like the sailors in the Book of Jonah. When a storm hit their ship, they didn’t ascribe it to a seasonal weather pattern. They quickly identified the cause (Jonah’s sinfulness) and agreed to an appropriate policy response (throw Jonah overboard). […]

“From the article: “A year ago, British meteorologists made headlines predicting that the buildup of greenhouse gases would help make 2007 the hottest year on record. At year’s end, even though the British scientists reported the global temperature average was not a new record — it was actually lower than any year since 2001 — the BBC confidently proclaimed, “2007 Data Confirms Warming Trend.”””
“From the article: “When the Arctic sea ice last year hit the lowest level ever recorded by satellites, it was big news and heralded as a sign that the whole planet was warming. When the Antarctic sea ice last year reached the highest level ever recorded by satellites, it was pretty much ignored. A large part of Antarctica has been cooling recently, but most coverage of that continent has focused on one small part that has warmed.”” …-

9. “Harper revisits scene of successful campaign stunt to showcase GST”
Tara Nelson on Global National stated that Harper made an announcement in a “campaign style stunt”.
Do they all get their “talking points” from the same source.
It’s bias by a thousand cuts – a word here, a phrase there, a raising of the eybrows, a shaking of the head, a mocking tone – put it all together and the agenda is clear – influence Canadians thinking.
And yet they refuse to admit it happens.

10. Good news: Canadians are now celebrating The Great Awakening in Canada. Bit by bit, incrementally, Canadians are awakening to the rape/brigandage/rapine perpetrated on them by the Librano$, to wit: Liberals AdScam Chretien-Martin-Citoyen Dion, et al.
It was “the federal Liberals”* who “gave” away the wharf for $1.00. The question is: What/how many $$$$$ did the Librano$ get from the deal? Unknown.

Community finally wins the wharf war
Digby group buys crumbling structure from private company
More than eight years after Ottawa disastrously handed control of Digby’s vital fishermen’s wharf to outsiders, and more than five years after frustrated locals first organized to buy it back, the wharf is finally in the hands of a community group.
In 1999, as part of their ill-conceived port divestiture program, the [*]federal Liberals not only gave the wharf to an outside private company for a dollar but then handed it $3 million to maintain the structure.
Instead, critics charge, the group used Ottawa’s money to pay salaries to its non-resident directors and foot the costs for unrelated ventures.
To make matters worse, it turned out Ottawa couldn’t do anything about that because, as an arbitrator ruled last year, the contract it signed with the group “had the proverbial hole in it ‘big enough to drive a truck through.'”
Meanwhile, the wharf was – quite literally – falling apart. The situation became so bad this spring local fishermen had put chains around a section of the wharf just to hold all the pieces together.
The Digby Harbour Port Authority, the local group that’s been negotiating to buy back the wharf, finalized the deal Dec. 20. …-

11. The Dunham skit was oh soooo, politically incorrect, and deliciously funny. Thanks Kate for giving me a good laugh in the midst of the utter stupidity we are hearing from the moonbat coalition.
I recently read that the Trudeau/Lewis era was the closest thing Canada came to a coalition government; don’t be surprised to see Dion try to pull off a similar stunt. A problem with that is the NDP have Grits in their sights, envisioning replacing them as Official Opposition. Dion likely hasn’t got the moxie to pull it off anyway (hint: he would want to be the leader of the moonbat coalition).
To do that Layton will have to move to the right, to a more mainstream approach, moving away from Kyoto stupidity and CO2 sequestration. The question is will he? We will see.

12.
So, let’s rid ourselves of the NAFTA provisions that mandate U.S. access to Canadian oil and gas and require that the prices charged for energy exports to the United States not exceed those charged to Canadians. Let’s opt out of the mechanism that enables U.S. companies to initiate binding arbitration whenever their businesses can claim to have been detrimentally affected by Canadian laws – including laws designed to protect our health and environment.
This guy is blissfully Ignorant. YES! YES! Make Export energy prices the same. The existing 10% markup is unfair to USA consumers! Natural gas price manipulation by the BC NDP (Barrett) filled the Socialist program coffers, at a price to Canadians of >5X the previous regulated home boy price. YES competitive pricing YES!
Canada doesn’t have very many environment LAWS, indeed its leadership is a facade. The EU uses Canadian, so called leadership, to influence US policy. Canada is the convenient conduit for effluence (Shit). Where is Canada’s clean air act? What is “FAIR” trade? What is competitive pricing? What is supply side economics? It’s all about the Global Competition for trade “STUPID”

In-touch online: How blogs are making a difference
Andy Johnson, CTV.ca News
For a generation that has traded in pens and paper for wireless laptops and PDAs, blogging has become the new journaling, with millions spilling their guts in online forums that are available for anyone and everyone to read. [..]
But a new group of those bloggers have shifted their daily musings away from obscure observations or anecdotes about their everyday lives, and are focusing their weblogs on making a difference in the real world.
One of the bloggers featured in this article has made it her personal goal to raise support for an orphanage in Africa — in the process becoming so connected to the place that at middle age she adopted a Namibian orphan herself and will be bringing the child home to Canada soon.
Another, a Toronto-based journalist, has committed to making one new “green” change in her life everyday for a year, while documenting the experience on her blog.
Another took the effort a step — or thousands of steps — further in an effort to impact the world, calling on bloggers around the globe to write about environmental issues on the same day. And by all accounts it worked, with more than 20,000 bloggers posting entries on the subject.
These blogs, and others, are proving that in the right hands weblogs can be an effective tool for spreading a message and inspiring people to act, says Kris Abel, CTV’s technology expert. […]

15. CBC is a write off, wasted effort to complain as witnessed in the reply from them on the collusion accusation. Only a Majority Conservative government can get rid of such a plague.
Canadian Press is no better. We hear from them things like calling Harper’s appearance at the same venue he announced the first GST cut as a “stunt” and also from Canadian Press they referred to Harper as “bragging” about the second cut to GST.
So it appears they’re all in cahoots and cut from the same genetically flawed cloth.
Terms like “stunts” and “bragging” are not exactly necessary when reporting an announcement from the PM.
It also should be noted all those chosen at random to comment on the reduced GST were happy with it, another little media “STUNT” that went horribly wrong.
We have to get inventive and work around and over them to get the truth out.

16. This morning as my wife and I were returning home from a breakfast outing to our favorite restaurant, we had a near collision on a heavily traveled side street. The light had turned green as we approached but the oncoming vehicle driver seemed to miscalculate my distance an made his left turn directly in front of us. I locked all 4’s prompted my wife’s scream, and emerged a hero.
This experience comes as no surprise as we have witnessed numerous similar near accidents. The common denominator always seems to be a cell phone in the hands of the offending driver.

17. Gunney99, I have witnessed/shared your experience too many times to count and it never fails to amaze me how a blast of the horn only gets you a “Hey, I’m on the phone” look. I happen to walk into work and they treat pedestrians even worse. I’ve actually watched 2 out of 3 vehicles leaving a parking structure with cells to their ear.
I’m tempted to mount a camera to my dash like the cops do and record this stuff for future law suits. It is either that or mount a .50 cal machine gun and deal with them myself.

I just don’t get it. Do women really want to get their jobs this way? What does that say about the women who get these jobs? Why wouldn’t the women who deserve (and already have) these jobs cry out against those who win in a draw from a hat?
Now I need to look through my portfolio and look for shares to sell.

The Dion Family Wishes To Share This Message
DM 07.013 – December 31, 2007
GATINEAU, Qc – The family of private Jonathan Dion killed in service in Afghanistan on December the 30th 2007, wishes to make public the following declaration:
It is never easy for parents to lose a child. We are devastated by the death of Jonathan who, with dignity, gave up his life serving his country with honour and pride alongside his brothers in arms in Afghanistan. We are extremely proud of our son and of what he accomplished during his life including his career in the Canadian Armed Forces. It will be his distinctive smile and his joie de vivre which will remain in our minds as we think of him. He loved being a soldier and loved being in the company of brothers and sisters in arms.
Jonathan had found his rightful place in the Canadian Forces. He was maturing rapidly and showed that he was living life to the fullest and was developing his full potential. He was an example to all of his family and he was a great brother. Since he passionately believed in his mission in Afghanistan we supported him when he volunteered for this mission. Quite recently he was telling us he would like to return should there be a second tour.
Jonathan lived the major part of his life in the city of Gatineau. He loved his city, his small part of the country, and his neighbourhood. He wanted more than anything else to make a difference in the world around him. He died doing what he loved best, to be a soldier and serve his country.

The Dion family wishes that the Medias respect their privacy during this period of deep mourning. They are not presently available for press interviews. Information concerning the repatriation, funeral service and the participation of the Medias will be made known later when the details will be known.

“entertainers” such as “bono” when making “political” statements should be called by their “real” names in his case it would be Paul Hewison and quite frankly I don’t think I really care what this little sun- glass wearing wanker thinks of Canada he choses not to pay his share of the taxes in his own country, but seems to feel obliged to pass judgement on us as though his opinion counted for something. I pay taxes here and am very much opposed to my hard earned dollars being spread far and wide at the urging of some little ponce that just happens to be some sort of entertainer. 23. My 11-year old gave me Mark Steyn’s “America Alone” for Christmas. Although Steyn can’t help himself from making a few quips and puns throughout the book, the basic thesis is quite chilling. While Muslim immigrants are having 3-4 children per family, Quebecers are having less than 1.3 kids (less than replacement – French Canadians are slowly self-exterminating), and in other parts of Canada, the numbers are not a lot higher. He predicts that by 2050, Muslims will form a majority in most European countries (and possibly Canada); these majorities will vote for sharia law, etc. In countries like Italy, Greece, and Spain, non-Muslims are having so few kids, he predicts their populations will halve over the next thirty years.
Russia is a particular basket case to him. Males have a life expectancy of only 59 years, one of the lowest of so-called “first world” societies. Drug resistant TB is rampant; 1% of the population is HIV-positive; more than 70% of all pregnancies result in abortion. He’s worried that as Russian society continues to slide, nukes will be sold to petro-states that don’t exactly sign on to the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty. He speculates that Russia may be forced to sell resource-rich parts of Siberia to China (as they sold Alaska to the US a century ago).
It’s a scary book, but it’s a thought-provoking read. Highly recommended.

24. maz2 — really interesting note re the Digby Wharf purchase. I had forgotten most of the details around the original sale. As a result of your posting I made a point of accessing some early articles as the scandal was breaking. (Funny, no RCMP investigations on this one.) I am astonished that this kind of thing gets quietly swept under the carpet while we waste time and money investigating Mulroney’s private business deals. I wonder if an investigation of the Liberals’ sales of wharfs could qualify for a public enquiry — or be folded into the mandate for the one being currently proposed? At the very least, the episode should be looked at by the ethics committe who may want to make some recommendations regarding fraudulent government contracting practices.
