  1. Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Tonight for you on Radio SDA Classics we have Glenn Gould performing Bach’s Keyboard Concerto No.1 in D Minor BWV 1052, with Leonard Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonic, in 1990:

In addition, for your listening pleasure, here’s Arthur Rubenstein performing Sergei Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, in 1956:

  2. Ahhhhh – Vitruvius – than you for bringing some peaceful moments to the evening’s festivities.
Great links – beautiful music, beautifully performed.

  3. Glen Gould,
brilliant with riviting oddness along lines of the reclusive master of Dracula*s castle.
    Arthur Rubenstein,
Severe self discipline, like Segovia. Highest human standard but at the expense of some soul and emotion. = TG

  4. Ahhhhh – Vitruvius – than you for bringing some peaceful moments to the evening’s festivities.

  5. Apologies for the double post – received an error mesage. And that should have read “thank you” not “than you”.

  6. As the night slowly slips away toward morning, and now that we’ve sent the kids to bed with a good dose of the classics, here on Radio SDA Late Nite we now have Miss Gwendoline Lamour singing these lyrics —
Where do they go, the smoke rings I blow, each night?
What do they do, those circles of blue and white?
Why do they seem to picture a dream above?
Why do they fade, my fantom parade, of love?

Puff, puff, puff, puff your cares away.
Puff, puff, puff, night and day.
Blow, blow them into air, silky little rings.
Blow, blow them everwhere, give your troubles wings.

Oh little smoke rings I love, please take me above, with you.
    Take me with you.

  7. Burlesque is an ancient art form, Niel, going back at least many thousands of years. Here’s an interesting work by Miss Mae West from the early part of the last century. Once again, notice that the lyrics are not trivial. In this case, Mae is warning the audience of the dangers of falling for her, like poor Willie did.

  8. The question becomes can KHS be compelled to testify in an inquiry in this country if he is here.
The compulsion can only come with a threat of jail.
Does anyone know if this is the case? Because if he cant be complelled even if he is here, then his threat to shut up in Germany means nothing, because he can just as easily stay quiet here.
If he can be compelled here then there is some argument for keeping him here.
Sleazy manouver and clear what he is up to, he doesnt want to return to Germany. I don’t understand why given that it is the land of chocolate 😉

  9. A small point for the absurd Maude Barlow and her pathetic “Council of Canadians”:
If the British Regulars, Fencibles and Canadien militia in the Canadian colonies of 1812 had not been recruited and “killbot” trained to varying degrees, there would not now be any “Canada.”
Maude and all the members of her daft “Council” would be Americans now.

  11. Vitruvius@2:28 AM – don’t worry about the spelling – I sometimes get it wrong as well 🙂

  12. What I find odd is that progressive factions have previously stated that they would like to see the voting age dropped. Yet, they think that teens are easily influenced and therefore too immature to be able to withstand a recruitment presentation from the CF. Then they do advocate showing propaganda like An Inconvenient Truth to even younger children. Go figure.

  13. Not something you’ll ever hear from liberal media sources, and yet the report was produced by Stats Canada: Foreign ownership myths
“Globalization, coupled with foreign investment and ownership, have transformed Canadian economic performance, driving wages, productivity, jobs, innovation and investment.”

  14. For me the WSJ error isn’t even about fact checking. It’s about fact knowing.
Don’t people just KNOW who George Wallace was? Especially if they work at the frickin Wall Street Journal?
I don’t care how old their copy editor is. I know who _Al Jolson_ was and I’m only 43.

  15. Notice that Schreiber is now threatening that he won’t talk if he’s sent back to Germany. That, as pointed out above, shows his real and only agenda. Not to face trial in Germany.
I’m saying that this whole ‘kerfuffle’ has been brought about by this agenda. Not to face trial in Germany. He has been colluding with the Liberals. He changed his story about the time frame of the 300,000 – a trivial matter, quite frankly.
After all, most certainly, Chretien and Martin were arranging their post-PM activities during their last days in office. And Paul Martin works, right now, on various contracts – and yet, he is, right now – an MP.
But Schreiber changed his previously sworn testimony that the deal was after Mulroney’s tenure as PM; now says it was two days before leaving (heck- 48 hours)..and the Liberals used that to try to smear Harper, via Guilt by ASsociation. You see, Harper and Mulroney talked to each other – wow.
In return for the Smear, the Liberals were supposed to keep Schreiber in Canada. That was their part of the Corrupt Deal.
Now, the Liberals are getting cold feet about an inquiry. They realize that it will involve them. They and their MPs were involved with Schreiber; Schreiber didn’t confine his lobbying to Mulroney. He was involved with Liberals, such as Allan MacEachen and Marc Lalonde.
So, Schreiber is now threatening – no talk, to force the Harper govt to keep him here. Of course, since he has a history of lying under oath, then, how does what he says help?

  16. ET: The Schreiber affair is all an overblown sleaze affair. Even if the guy ‘sings like a canary’, who is going to believe his already contradictory testimony.
If the LIEberals love him then let him expose all their lovely dealings with him. Irwin Cotler should be leading the charge!
It is a black farce from beginning to end. But then the LIEberals are somewhat “truth-challenged” as well.

  17. Banana company, Chiquita, ‘armed guerrillas’
Victims of the bloody paramilitary conflict in Colombia are suing the US banana company Chiquita, accusing it of funding and arming guerrilla groups blamed for torture and thousands of killings.
The lawsuit, filed in New York, seeks $7.86 billion (£4 billion) on behalf of 393 victims and their relatives. They accuse Chiquita Brands of complicity in hundreds of murders carried out by the United Self-Defence Forces of Colombia, a right-wing paramilitary group known by its Spanish acronym AUC….
This year Chiquita admitted that it had paid off rebel groups in Colombia, including the AUC, which is accused of carrying out massacres during Colombia’s long-running civil war before it began to disarm in 2003….
The new lawsuit makes far more serious allegations, accusing Chiquita of abetting atrocities including terrorism, war crimes and crimes against humanity. Jonathan Reiter, lawyer for the victims, said that Chiquita’s support for the AUC went beyond mere protection payments and included the shipment of thousands of rifles through a port facility owned by Banadex.
UN: climate change will have ‘abrupt and irreversible’ consequences
A panel of the United Nations’ leading scientists is to warn that climate change could have “abrupt and irreversible” consequences, in a landmark document designed to force action from member states on the issue.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report is seen as one of the most influential documents produced on the global warming issue to date, with the goal of forcing some of the world’s biggest polluters to curb their emissions.
The Times has learnt that IPCC delegates – made up of some of the world’s most eminent scientists – agreed on a text this morning after all-night negotiations in Spain, in which it was decided that tough wording would be needed.
As a result, the text of the draft report, which is due to be officially released tomorrow by Ban Ki Moon, the UN Secretary-General, will caution that human activity could lead to “abrupt and irreversible” changes in our climate unless action is taken.

  18. How would you respond to the Greenspan brothers if you were the Justice Minister for Canada?
Would you sue the Greenspan brothers? Will the Law Society take action against the Greenspans? Who is paying the Greenspans?
    …-
“After the Court of Appeal issued its ruling Thursday, Dennison indicated to the court that the Justice minister had agreed not to extradite Schreiber for two weeks, but he would not give a legally binding “undertaking” to back up this promise.
This brought an angry response in court from defence lawyer Edward Greenspan. “Why can’t he give an undertaking? He is making a political statement. I don’t trust him,” said Greenspan, who indicated that the RCMP were waiting at the Toronto-area jail where Schreiber was being held and tried to remove him from the country a month ago in anticipation of a previous court ruling.” …-
Schreiber can stay in Canada – for now

  19. Yes, hans, it’s quite the skuffle. But what is interesting is the different agendas, which are really unrelated to each other but which have artificially been connected. Disconnecting them is actually difficult because that leaves the original agendas unsatisfied.
Schreiber’s agenda: Stay in Canada to avoid the criminal trial in Germany. He must have concluded that the German trial is ‘big time’ and he’ll be convicted.
    Liberal agenda: Smear Harper.
That’s it. Now, the problem is, these two agendas have no connection. Harper and his ministers have no connection to Schreiber.
Juvenile Solution? (1) Find someone connected to Schreiber and connected to Harper. (2)Smear this Someone. (3) Voila! Guilt by Association!
The fact that steps 1 and 2 are violations of Charter Rights, Integrity, Justice and Ethics? Irrelevant to the Liberals.
So, they found Schreiber, who has been madly writing every political party (Harper, Layton, Dion) since last March, trying to get them to interfere to prevent his extradition. Quite rightly, both Harper and Layton ignored this request.
A political system cannot, ever, interfere in the legal system of a nation. Never.
But, the Liberals took the bait. They saw in Schreiber, a means of besmirching Harper. They thought: Aha! Mulroney and Harper – they were both in parties with the term ‘Conservative’ in the name! And Harper has had Mulroney to dinner at Harrington Lake! Aha!
So, Schreiber changed his earlier sworn testimony to smear Mulroney. And the Liberals claimed; Guilt by Association.
The problem is, Guilt by Association is going to involve many Liberals – who aren’t connected merely by a term in the party label (‘conservative)of by being civil servants over a period of 20 years, but who had active dealings with Schreiber: MacEachen, Lalonde.
So, the original Liberal Agenda: Smear Harper, is looking rather foggy right now. He and his staff were not connected to Mulroney. And most certainly not to Schreiber. But high level Liberal ministers were directly connected to Schreiber. Hmmm. So, how do the Liberals disconnect from this agenda? Can they?
That leaves Schreiber’s Agenda. Stay in Canada. If the Liberals weaken in their attempts to link Schreiber to Mulroney to Harper, then, Schreiber may be off to Germany. Schreiber is already threatening – the Liberals. He’s saying that he won’t talk if he’s sent to Germany. [Note: his talk is pathological lies anyway, but…]
But, what Schreiber isn’t openly saying, and I’m speculating is warning..He’s warning the Liberals. Fulfil my agenda or I’ll make trouble for you. I can file new affidavits about my dealings with you Liberals..I can….
Fascinating. How do the Liberals get out of this quicksand that they’ve, with Eyes Wide Shut, walked into?

  20. ET, Liberals are experts at getting out of quicksand. Remember the Dosanj affair where he was caught offering inducement to Conservative candidate (forget his name). He was caught red-handed, but the Grits and their MSM (not all, their clique) spun this to a “cut and paste” job where they left impression words had been altered (they hadn’t) and when this came to light, voila, old news, nothing to see here.
Maybe this bunch isn’t quite as media savvy (likely), but they are using the same shotgun smear approach, but when it becomes clear they were full of s**t, they just let it fade away, not retraction, no recriminations, nothing.
Only this time they’ve messed with Mulroney and he’s hitting back hard. Thibault is talking brave but from what I see, Mulroney has him dead to rights, and he will have anyone else who speaks outside privileged sanctum of HofC. That goes for any comments about Harper and Tories; if Dion or minions shoot off mouth out on street, in scrum, in radio studio, they will get their butts sued off. Of course, this will be spun as “intimidation.”
Ah yes, KHS, who said only this week that he wasn’t filing affadavits, writing letter, shooting off his lip to avoid extradition. That lie was put to rest today. Same goes for Grits (notice NDP keeping safe distance).
Question for Mr Dion – if Harper should have seen and actioned KHS letters/affadavits, why didn’t Dion? Why would he be held to different standard than PMSH? After all, isn’t he there to offer alternative to Tories, and thus should take same action as a PM. I guess not.
In the end, doesn’t matter because Dion and Grits will have to fact their executioner, the electorate, some time. They just get to pick the date of that execution. Polls even? So what. Even Grits don’t believe this, otherwise they would have forced election by now.
Liberals continue to be dead men walking, now dead men getting sued.

  21. If KHS cannot be compelled to speak in this country then there is no reason for him not to be in Germany, there is no difference.
Second question, if he lied to the inquiry when testifying from Germany is there any difference to him lying if he testified here, back to the compulsion argument. Will he be speaking is a different legal environment in Gernmany versus in Canada? If not ship him back to face the music in the Land of Chocolate.
If there is then perhaps there is a reason to keep him here. Of course how would you determine if he lied and would you proecute him for that here…..no matter what he does does Canada want KHS in this country? Becasue I am not sure you can believe what he will say anyway…..but i do want to Brian to answer some questions on the $300,000 in cash….at best he was being an idiot and I want to hear him say it.
If thats it then lets drop it and move on, unless we really want to understand where the vendetta comes from…..I am not sure the country wants to pay for that answer at this stage…..but I would love to know.

  22. So CBS was perfectly happy to give the Nutcase a podium and support as long as it didn’t cause them any trouble…. and now that it is causing them trouble? Aren’t these guys supposed to be on the cutting edge of events?
As I predicted … now that the KHS fiasco is blowing back on the LIberals ….. the MSM are pushing the story as far down from the top of the page as they can get.
It is going to disappear very quickly as they scramble to change channels.

  23. Attention people against the decomposition of government. Schreiber was kept here in Canada by the Liberals but for two reasons. Whenever they needed muck against Harper and/or Mulroney, he would be conveniently available.
On the other hand, if they needed help to raise funds for their party’s failing finances, Schreiber could have served them royally, in exchange for his freedom of course. You need’t be a genius to figure out “Ontario Liberal tactics.”
The CBC was also conveniently available whenever Mr. Dion needed another load of manure. With a budget of 1.2 billion dollars and dozens of readily available puppets, The Fifth Estate entered the picure at an opportune moment.

  24. Last year, 510,000 foreign migrants came to the UK to stay for at least 12 months, according to the Office for National Statistics. At the same time 400,000 people, more than half of whom were British, emigrated.
An exodus on this scale – amounting to one British citizen leaving the country every three minutes – has not been seen in the UK for almost 50 years.
    ———
Since Labour came to power in 1997, nearly four million foreign nationals have come to Britain and 1.6 million have left. Over the same period, 1.8 million Britons have left, but only 979,000 have returned.
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/11/16/nemi116.xml

  25. stephen, Schreiber is saying that IF you send him back to Germany, THEN, he won’t testify against Mulroney or anyone. The Germans had said – send him back; we’ll collaborate with you; he can testify via video conferencing. No problem.
Schreiber is saying that if he’s sent back, he’ll go silent. That’s quite the threat.
The problem is, that his verbal statements, here or there or anywhere, are unreliable. He’s a pathological liar – even in sworn testimony, even under oath. It’s irrelevant to him.
As for the 300,000 – I don’t care about it. I don’t see what difference it makes about anything. It’s a private deal. Whether it was made when Mulroney was in office or outside of it – who cares? Remember, right now, Paul Martin is an MP, and he is carrying on business all around the world.
It’s not the same as the Liberals using our taxpayer money to hire companies to campaign for the Liberals in Quebec! This Mulroney-Schreiber deal is private money!
shamrock – Dion is saying that he didn’t receive Schreiber’s letter (heh, sure)..until about 10 days ago, and he, good boy that he is, immediately sent it to the RCMP. Since Schreiber is, at the moment, in cahoots with the Liberals, he’ll keep quiet about the letters he sent in March to ALL political leaders (Harper, Layton and Dion).
Only Layton and Harper say that their offices received the March letters; but both offices refused to respond. A political system cannot interfere with a country’s legal system. Dion is saying that he, alone, didn’t receive the March letter. Heh.
It’s interesting to see how the Liberals are going to slither out of this. They’ve become ensnared, I think, between two different sets of tentacles. If it was just the Liberals-CPC, then, the whole issue could die. Remember, Harper’s govt is not involved with Schreiber’s deals.
But, this time, there are two To The Death Cockfighters: Schreiber and Mulroney.
Now that’s a whole different scenario. Each has a different surface agenda: Schreiber:Stay out of Germany. Mulroney: Preserve My Saintly Image.
And a common hidden agenda – We Hate Each Other and We are Both Crooks.
Watching two Godfathers fight it out, is something else.

  26. Garth Turner has posted a little anecdote on his blog whereby he passed a cup around the Liberals for a donation to Thibault’s defense fund and came up with a whole four dollars. Isn’t Garth the Special Advisor on fundraising for Dion?
In another vein, since Garth was once a member of Mulroney’s caucus, he too could be found guilty by association and should start passing the cup around for himself.

  27. Karl Schreiber won’t “talk” if he is deported to Germany?
Would anybody else call this extortion or blackmail?
And who needs him to “talk”. Just compile his thousands and thousands of pages of documents and pleadings he has already produced over the past 8 years where he has already blackmailed the Canadian government into being an accomplice in helping a criminal avoid justice in Germany.
And, related to the private business consulting deal with Mulroney there is already a civil lawsuit between the two men.
What more could Karl have to say? His recent affadavit restates that Mulroney had nothing to do with Airbus.
But, he hints that he has lots of information about other people. If I was Dion and the Liberals I would certainly read between the lines that those “other people” would be after 1993 and therefore connected to the Liberal government.
Perhaps he IS also blackmailing the Liberals? I’ll “talk” about Mulroney if you help me stay in Canada and I’ll keep my mouth shut about Liberals?
This stinks to high heavens and I can’t shake the feeling that there is Liberal maneuverings and slime behind this whole thing.
And of course it only works in Canada with a compliant and equally slimey Liberal media.

  28. KHS was mainly a PC supporter. I am surprised nobody has asked Joe Clark what he thinks of all of this.
Problem is that is ancient history….you would need to call Peter Pocklington and whole host of other people….It was a different time before campaign finances were closely watched. I am sure the Turner leadership race was just as ugly from a finance perspective.
Schreiber cant say he bribed people or he will be in jail here and I think his desire is to not be in jail anywhere. I cant imagine Canadian jails are significantly better than German jails. And if this is jst about that then there are treaties to let people serve time in the penal system of their home countries.
If KHS has soemthing to say he shoudl swear an affadavit now and say it. Barring the complications I raise earlier he should be shipped back to the land of chocolate. Brian should still explain why he took the $300,000 in cash, not Luc Lavoie but BMXPM.
It was, at a minimum a dumb thing to do.

  29. Why does Dion keep betting against Canada ??
    From the Washington Times;
    * Global Warming Winner? Bet On Canada *
[Predicted climate change might not be bad for everyone.
Canada would be a net economic winner, according to an April U.N. report cited by a number of authorities in interviews in recent days. The paper predicted that milder temperatures would expand agriculture while boosting the economy with lower winter heating bills.
Yale University economics and environment professor Robert Mendelsohn lists a number of gains that Canada could expect from a 50- to 100-year shift to a generally warmer and wetter climate.
Among them would be the ability to grow fruit and vegetables in areas that now are useful only for grain, and the opening of iced-over Arctic waters to navigation and other commercial uses.
“Canadians will clearly be better off in the future than they are today. I can say that with confidence,” he said. “The most dramatic gains could be in agriculture, depending on precipitation.”] WT

  32. At least one writer at the Star isn’t a brain dead moonbat:
Why this won’t be Gomery II
    Nov 16, 2007 04:30 AM
    Chantal Hébert
OTTAWA – There are more than a half-dozen reasons why the upcoming inquiry into Brian Mulroney’s affairs will be fundamentally different from Justice John Gomery’s investigation into the Liberal sponsorship program, and the fact that it will focus on a former prime minister may be the least of them.
    1. Paul Martin – who instigated the Gomery commission – was the number two figure in the government on whose watch the sponsorship affair took place. Over the period when Mulroney was having his controversial dealings with German businessman Karlheinz Schreiber, Stephen Harper was involved in the Reform party.
    2. Many members of Martin’s cabinet – including Stéphane Dion – were present at the time of the sponsorship program. None of Harper’s ministers had a say in the 1997 libel settlement Mulroney secured from the federal government for having linked his name to a criminal investigation involving Schreiber and the 1988 Air Canada purchase of Airbus planes.
    3. Some of the highest-ranking officials in the Jean Chrétien regime had a direct hand in the sponsorship initiative. With the exception of Government Leader in the Senate Marjory LeBreton, who was a PMO insider throughout the Mulroney years, none of the current government had a prominent role in his regime.
    4. Chrétien opposed Martin’s decision to call the Gomery inquiry. It came on the heels of a fierce civil war between their two clans. Mulroney actually called for an inquiry into his dealings. Although most of his associates backed Belinda Stronach for the Conservative leadership in 2004, Mulroney has since been supportive of Harper.
    5. The Liberals were front and centre at the Gomery commission but the ruling Conservatives are unlikely to monopolize that unenviable spot at the Mulroney inquiry. His legal battle involved a Liberal government. And Schreiber did not restrict his lobbying activities to Tories; he was also close to some prominent Liberals, including Marc Lalonde, who served under Pierre Trudeau.
    6. The sponsorship program was shut down only months before the Gomery inquiry was set up. Until then, it had been part of the government’s unity strategy. When the public inquiry got underway, a police investigation was in its early phase. By comparison, the events at the core of the Mulroney inquiry go back 15 to 20 years. In whole or in part, they have been the subject of a lengthy RCMP investigation that could yet be reopened.

Hon. Ralph Goodale (Wascana, Lib.): previous intervention next intervention
Mr. Speaker, the question was whether Mr. Mulroney complied with the law.
The Mulroney-Schreiber issue reignited in the media only days after the government came into power. There are damning letters in the Prime Minister’s Office, but the paper trail is hidden.
Ministers deliberately refused to be briefed. A justice department review was started and then suddenly stopped. Some ministers consult Mr. Mulroney daily. He has numerous personal encounters with the Prime Minister. Was Mr. Schreiber ever discussed?
Will the Prime Minister change the mandate to include specifically whether the government was involved in a cover-up?

Mr. Speaker, all the allegations made by the member for Wascana are completely baseless. They are complete fabrications.
