Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

The bastard child of the Shawinigate strangler and Mr. mumbles is the ugly duckling of the liberal party, who would have thunk it?
Princess Dion’s future is as the song goes:
Nothing from nothing leaves nothing……………
LMAO. Good post Kate.
So Citoyen Dion put up the white flag AGAIN today….he had better keep it handy because Harper is just starting to get warmed up….the best is yet to come!
With Garth’s help, even Stephan would get that one. Cute.
Eugene, yes you are missing the joke. You can’t see a thing because that is Kate’s assessment of Stephane Dion’s political future: a big nothing.
A word of caution, folks: don’t gloat too much. If Adscam wasn’t enough to reduce the Liberals to a rump party, then there are still a significant number who will vote for them no matter what. It is still conceivable that the Liberals could form a majority government in the next election (but they won’t be getting my vote). Remember, they have the CBC and CTV, as well as most major newspapers, hauling water for them. Kate and Andrew Coyne and Steve Janke get lots of readers, but those readers are people who bother to keep themselves informed even between elections. Lots of people don’t keep informed, but still exercise their right to vote.
*groan*
I’d like to say I was just pretending to be stupid, but… 🙂
Dion’s musings on “reconsidering” the cuts to the GST will have the greatest effect in Ontario where implementation of the nations most hated tax got the liberals a lot of support when Chretien promised to “kill it”.
Now that this meme has slipped out of Dion’s mouth I expect that you won’t see many polls being released on voter intentions by the MSM.
A friend sent this to me a while ago so I thought this may be the best time to share it:
Sometimes politicians and people exclaim; “It’s just a tax cut for the rich!”, and it is just accepted to be fact. But what does that really mean?
Just in case you are not completely clear on this issue, we hope the following will help.
Let’s put tax cuts in terms everyone can understand. Suppose that everyday, ten men go out for dinner. The bill for all ten comes to $100.
If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:
The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh $7.
The eighth $12.
The ninth $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.
So, that’s what they decided to do.
The ten men ate dinner in the restaurant every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve.
“Since you are all such good customers,” he said, “I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily meal by $20.”
So, now dinner for the ten only cost $80. The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes.
So, the first four men were unaffected. They would still eat for free. But what about the other six, the paying customers? How could they divvy up the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his ‘fair share’?
The six men realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody’s share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being ‘PAID’ to eat their meal.
So, the restaurant owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.
And so:
The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% savings).
The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28% savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).
Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to eat for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings.
“I only got a dollar out of the $20,” declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man “but he got $10!”
“Yeah, that’s right,” exclaimed the fifth man. “I only saved a dollar, too. It’s unfair that he got ten times more than me!”
“That’s true!” shouted the seventh man. “Why should he get $10 back when I got only $2? The wealthy get all the breaks!”
“Wait a minute,” yelled the first four men in unison. “We didn’t get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!” The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.
The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for dinner, so the nine sat down and ate without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn’t have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!
And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up at the table anymore.
There are lots of good restaurants in Europe and the Caribbean.
you can just imagine the new political ads
“Dion favors Tax Increases”
Dion should really get the McGuinty crowd doing his PR and press releases. That way he could campaign on not raising taxes, and then afterwards just go and do it….oh wait, Mcguinty just got a second majority by doing that, never mind….
Heard something interesting on Gormley yesterday. Mike Duffy was on, and he explained the “why” of not bringing down the Conservative government. Something to do with Liberal leadership reviews and elections in their party constitution.
The long and the short of it is that if they bring the Tories down and lose the election, they are stuck with Dion for another two years. Otherwise, they can find some way to boot him out using the Parliamentary Caucus before an election.
Don’t think the Liberals don’t know what an unspeakable moron he is. They are also smart enough to get rid of him in a sneaky manner. Still means probably one more Throne Speech from Harper.
Okay, I dropped by last night, stared at the screen, reloaded page several times and gave up and went to bed. I was tired.
Upon coming to work I finally figured it out…it’s a real thinker that one, lol.
Would it not make a great campaign video to have the Cretin claiming they would get rid of the GST then on the other side have Dion saying they will increase the GST?
The only true voice the people have in Ottawa is the NDP. They are a true opposition.
Yep ok, they are a true opposition.
Opposed to victory in Afghanistan
Opposed to tax cuts
Opposed to property rights for Canadians
Opposed to private ownership of firearms
Opposed to jailing violent criminals
Opposed to raising the age of sexual consent above 14 years old
I could go on…
Yep, you name it, they oppose it. That’s why Smilin’ Jack has 12 seats and is unlikely to keep ’em all. There’s not too many morons out there who still go for that stuff.
Say, is that why you keep commenting here? You’re LONELY?! Poor baby!
Opposed to oppression!! Who else even opens their mouths. Opposition keeps the gov’t on it’s toes. He does this without calling names unlike our SaskATory party here. All they did was yell and grandstand.Property rights protect no working families. We have not won the war yet.Who the hell needs hand guns? He’s all for jailing violent criminals we all are. He’s against jailing eveybody. Only 30% of Canadians support your tories.
ok4u: “He does this without calling names”
Jack! on the creation of the New Conservative party in 2003: “A Same-Sect Marriage”
“Property rights protect no working families.” –> until Government wants their house to build a road.
“Only 30% of Canadians support your tories.” –> 40% in other opinion polls, while 60% think Stephen Harper is the best leader — compared to 15% for Jack.
“We have not won the war yet.” –> and the War for Socialism took a big step backward in Central & Eastern Europe during August-December, 1989, and August-December, 1991.
Come to think of it –
“A Same-Sect Marriage” would also describe the marriage of the Canadian Labour Congress and the CCF that created the NDP in 1961.
HMMM… 😉
I know this is like taking candy from a baby, but I just can’t help myself.
ok4ua says: “Property rights protect no working families.” Beeecause no working family owns their own house?
“We have not won the war yet.” No, and Smilin’ Jack is making it his election platform to make sure we run away before we win. Thereby ensuring defeat, incidentally.
“Who the hell needs hand guns?” Who the hell are you to decide what I need and don’t need, buddy? This is supposed to be a FREE country. That’s another thing the NDP is opposed to I guess.
“He’s all for jailing violent criminals we all are. He’s against jailing eveybody.” Riiight. And Harper is FOR jailing everybody?
“Only 30% of Canadians support your tories.” Well, if that’s true, how come Mr. Dion is abstaining from voting on the mini-budget, the Throne Speech, the crime bill thing…
Come ON man, you are making this ‘way too easy! What are you, in grade school?
