The Left climbed up a ladder; a ladder of human skin, flesh, and bone; corpse by corpse; a ladder of the 100,000,000 human corpses; humans murdered by the Left. The Left dares not look down; the Left looks up, but, the mirage of its Utopia recedes, recedes, recedes, ……

A Left-Handed Salute
A review of The Intellectuals and the Flag, by Todd Gitlin
This short, loosely organized collection of occasional essays makes for a surprisingly interesting and valuable book, well worth reading and pondering. Sociologist and radical activist Todd Gitlin, who has been a figure in the American Left since his Vietnam-era days in Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), has made a serious effort to reflect on the failures of the American Left since the 1960s. The criticisms he puts forward here, which are inevitably self-criticisms in part, are unsparing and penetrating, made all the more memorable by his unacademic, direct, and often epigrammatic style.
Gitlin’s criticism is relentless, and will win him few new friends on the Left, though it will likely energize the many enemies he already has there. He sees a story rich with irony, in which it has been precisely the Left’s most triumphant expressions in contemporary American life that led it into the spiritual wasteland in which it now finds itself. And for this lost condition, he believes, the Left has only itself to blame. It embraced the smug disassociation from existing society epitomized in the sweeping call by émigré philosopher and ’60s hero Herbert Marcuse for a “Great Refusal” of the confining ideals and crass manipulations of the modern capitalist political economy. But the embrace of Marcuse’s influential but ill-defined slogan has amounted in practice to a “great withdrawal,” a narcissistic retreat into self-proclaimed “marginality,” an obsession with ever more minute forms of identity politics and the infinite “problematizing” of “truth,” a reflexive opposition to America and the West, and an immurement in “theories” whose radicalism is so pure that they never quite touch down to earth—follies all underwritten and protected by the perquisites and comforts of academia.
Gitlin argues that the results may have benefited individual leftists, who have feathered their own nests quite nicely by fusing radicalism and academic careerism, but they have been unambiguously disastrous for the Left as a political force outside the academy. “If we had a manual,” Gitlin remarks, “it would be called, What is Not to Be Done.” …- http://www.claremont.org/publications/crb/id.1395/article_detail.asp

[The future seemed mighty bleak back then[1960s), and you merely had to open the newspapers for the latest story confirming how the human species was speeding down a congested highway to extinction. A group of scientists calling themselves the Club of Rome issued a report called “Limits to Growth.” It explained that lifeboat Earth had become so weighed down with humans that we were running out of food, minerals, forests, water, energy and just about everything else that we need for survival. Paul Ehrlich’s best-selling book “The Population Bomb” (1968) gave England a 50-50 chance of surviving into the 21st century. In 1980, Jimmy Carter released the “Global 2000 Report,” which declared that life on Earth was getting worse in every measurable way.] Stephen Moore
And the Population Bomb —– bombs.
It also turns out that the Malthusians (who worried that we would overpopulate the planet) got the story wrong. Human beings aren’t reproducing like Norwegian field mice. Demographers now say that in the second half of this century, the human population will stabilize and then fall. If we use the same absurd extrapolation techniques demographers used in the 1970s, Japan, with its current low birth rate, will have only a few thousand citizens left in 300 years.
Human nature causes history to repeat itself — the ‘this-time-it-is-different’ thing doesn’t help.
[Mr. Ehrlich, whose every prediction turned out wrong, won a MacArthur Foundation “genius award”; Simon, who got the story right, never won so much as a McDonald’s hamburger. But now who looks like the lunatic? This latest survey of the planet is certainly sweet vindication of Simon and others, like Herman Kahn, who in the 1970s dared challenge the “settled science.” (Are you listening, global-warming alarmists?)]Stephen Moore

Now here’s something to make your day–not! The following is no surprise, considering that we now use such shields as the Charter to excuse the least responsible–to criminal–among us from personal responsibility. Anyone who spends time in a school–or just about anywhere else these days–will notice the quick “It wasn’t me/my fault” when something goes wrong. This is now the default position: the more irresponsible the person, the least likely it is that he/she will be held to account. Those who are already behaving responsibly, e.g., teachers, stores, manufacturers, homeowners, etc. will, reprehensibly–I don’t use the word “unbelievably” any more: it’s all too believable with the morons who now sit on the bench–have the blame downloaded onto them.
Read on and take your blood pressure pills!
‘The Stella Awards: Proof of the “Entitlement Mentality”
‘It’s time again for the “Stella Awards,” named after 81-year-old Stella Liebeck who spilled hot coffee on herself and successfully sued the McDonald’s in New Mexico where she purchased the coffee. As you may remember, she took the lid off the coffee and put it between her knees while she was driving. Who would ever think one could get burned doing that, right ?
‘The Stellas are a legal version of the Darwin Awards, and are awarded annually for the most outlandish verdicts in lawsuits in the U.S.; i.e., the kinds of cases that make you scratch your head. So keep your head scratcher handy. Here are the Stellas for the past year:
‘7TH PLACE :
Kathleen Robertson of Austin, Texas, was awarded $80,000 by a jury of her peers after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler who was running about in a furniture store. The store owners were understandably surprised by the verdict, considering the running toddler was Ms. Robertson’s own son.
‘6TH PLACE :
Carl Truman, 19, of Los Angeles, California, won $74,000 plus medical expenses when his neighbor ran over his hand with a Honda Accord. Mr. Truman apparently didn’t notice there was someone at the wheel of the car when he was trying to steal his neighbor’s hubcaps.
‘5TH PLACE :
Terrence Dickson, of Bristol, Pennsylvania, was leaving a house he had just burglarised by way of the garage. Unfortunately for Mr. Dickson, the automatic garage door opener malfunctioned and he could not get the garage door to open. Worse, he couldn’t re-enter the house because the door connecting the garage to the house locked when Mr. Dickson pulled it shut. Forced to sit for eight, count ’em, EIGHT, days on a case of Pepsi and a large bag of dry dog food, Mr. Dickson sued the homeowner’s insurance company claiming undue mental Anguish. Amazingly, the jury said the insurance company must pay Mr. Dickson $500,000 for his anguish.
‘4TH PLACE :
Jerry Williams, of Little Rock, Arkansas, was awarded $14,500 plus medical expenses after being bitten on the butt by his next door neighbour’s beagle, even though the beagle was on a chain in its owner’s fenced yard. Mr. Williams did not get as much as he asked for because the jury believed the beagle might have been provoked at the time of the butt bite because Mr. Williams had climbed over the fence into the neighbour’s yard and repeatedly shot the dog with a pellet gun.
‘3RD PLACE :
A jury ordered a Philadelphia restaurant to pay Amber Carson of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, $113,500 after she slipped on a spilled soft drink and broke her tailbone. The reason the soft drink was on the floor ? Ms. Carson had thrown it at her boyfriend 30 seconds earlier during an argument.
‘2ND PLACE :
Kara Walton of Claymont, Delaware, sued the owner of a night club in a nearby city because she fell from the bathroom window to the floor, knocking out her two front teeth. Even though Ms. Walton was trying to sneak through the ladies’ room window to avoid paying the $3.50 cover charge, the jury said the night club had to pay her $12,000, plus dental expenses.
‘1ST PLACE : (May I have a fanfare played on 50 kazoos, please ?)
This year’s runaway First Place Stella Award winner was Mrs. Merv Grazinski, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, who purchased a new 32-foot Winnebago motor home. On her first trip, coming home from an OU football game, Ms. Grazinski drove on to the freeway, set the cruise control at 70 mph and calmly left the driver’s seat to go to the back of the Winnebago and make herself a sandwich. Not surprisingly, the motor home left the freeway, crashed and overturned. Mrs. Grazinski sued Winnebago for failing to include in the owner’s manual the instruction to remain in the driver’s seat while the cruise control was set. The Oklahoma jury awarded her $1,750,000 plus a new motor home. Winnebago has now rewritten their owner’s manual as a result of this suit, just in case Mrs. Grazinski has any relatives who might also want to buy a motor home.’

Kidney patients die as Zimbabwe crisis deepens
Mandy Mukwesha remembers with fondness her friend Noel Sakala, the quiet football-loving teenager who occupied the bed next to her in hospital.
Both aged 17, their lives blighted by kidney disease, and dependent on regular sessions on a kidney dialysis machine, they gave each other encouragement and talked about the school work they were missing.
But now Noel is dead — a victim not of the illness for which he could have been treated, but of the economic crisis that has engulfed Zimbabwe and has brought its health service to the brink of collapse. …- http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/10/07/wzim107.xml

Expats fear health cover could vanish as French tighten rules
….Thousands of Britons who have moved to France for early retirement could lose their rights to state health care under a new law that limits benefits to nonworking expatriates.
In a move that has spread alarm in the southern and western regions favoured by the British, the authorities have begun enforcing a 2006 law that bars unemployed EU citizens from joining the French health system…..
…The new French rules require foreigners to take out private insurance if they do not have cover through their home state or through contributing at work to the French system. After retirement age, benefits in France are financed by the home country’s national insurance system…. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/europe/article2381542.ece

Those who are already behaving responsibly, e.g., teachers, stores, manufacturers, homeowners, etc. will, reprehensibly–I don’t use the word “unbelievably” any more: it’s all too believable with the morons who now sit on the bench–have the blame downloaded onto them.

If you read this, you’re in a shrinking breed
Shrinking newsrooms have become epidemic, but it’s still shocking to witness the gutting of Global TV’s local news production teams nationwide. The move is nothing short of tragic, and it should serve as a clear warning of the general ill-health of the nation’s local media. […]
Meanwhile, the CBC, with its billion dollars in annual subsidies, swells with managers and producers, and lays off front-line reporters.
Bottom line: The medium ain’t healthy, but is anyone getting the message?

Ignatieff urges Liberals to stay united behind Dion
[…]
“Let’s take the labels off our necks here,” Ignatieff said. “There are no more Ignatieff people, Dion people, Dryden people, Brison people. They are Liberals. And we have to fight and win as a team, and we will.”
Ignatieff noted he got up within 30 seconds of losing to Dion at last December’s leadership convention to pledge support to the new leader. “I pledged my support then. It remains now,” he said….-
