Butter flavoured microwave popcorn is dangerous. I read that the ACTII popcorn was being made in China, but now we read: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,295761,00.html
Consumers, not just factory workers, may be in danger from fumes from buttery flavoring in microwave popcorn, according to a warning letter to federal regulators from a doctor at a leading lung research hospital.
A pulmonary specialist at Denver’s National Jewish Medical and Research Center has written to federal agencies to say doctors there believe they have the first case of a consumer who developed lung disease from the fumes of microwaving popcorn several times a day for years.
“We cannot be sure that this patient’s exposure to butter flavored microwave popcorn from daily heavy preparation has caused his lung disease,” cautioned Dr. Cecile Rose. “However, we have no other plausible explanation.”
The July letter, made public Tuesday by a public health policy blog, refers to a potentially fatal disease commonly called popcorn lung that has been the subject of lawsuits by hundreds of workers at food factories exposed to chemicals used for flavoring.
In response to Rose’s finding, the Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association issued a statement Tuesday recommending that its members reduce “to the extent possible” the amount of diacetyl in butter flavorings they make. It noted that diacetyl is approved for use in flavors by the federal Food and Drug Administration.

Is carbon-offsetting just eco-enslavement?
In offsetting his flights by sponsoring ‘eco-friendly’ hard labour in India, David Cameron has exposed the essence of environmentalism.
Brendan O’Neill
If you thought that the era of British bigwigs keeping Indians as personal servants came to an end with the fall of the Raj in 1947, then you must have had a rude awakening last week.
In a feature about carbon offsetting in The Times (London), it was revealed that the leader of the UK Conservative Party, David Cameron, offsets his carbon emissions by effectively keeping brown people in a state of bondage. Whenever he takes a flight to some foreign destination, Cameron donates to a carbon-offsetting company that encourages people in the developing world to ditch modern methods of farming in favour of using their more eco-friendly manpower to plough the land. So Cameron can fly around the world with a guilt-free conscience on the basis that, thousands of miles away, Indian villagers, bent over double, are working by hand rather than using machines that emit carbon.
Welcome to the era of eco-enslavement.
The details of this carbon-offsetting scheme are disturbing. Cameron offsets his flights by donating to Climate Care. The latest wheeze of this carbon-offsetting company is to provide ‘treadle pumps’ to poor rural families in India so that they can get water on to their land without having to use polluting diesel power. Made from bamboo, plastic and steel, the treadle pumps work like ‘step machines in a gym’, according to some reports, where poor family members step on the pedals for hours in order to draw up groundwater which is used to irrigate farmland (1). These pumps were abolished in British prisons a century ago. It seems that what was considered an unacceptable form of punishment for British criminals in the past is looked upon as a positive eco-alternative to machinery for Indian peasants today.
What might once have been referred to as ‘back-breaking labour’ is now spun as ‘human energy’. According to Climate Care, the use of labour-intensive treadle pumps, rather than labour-saving diesel-powered pumps, saves 0.65 tonnes of carbon a year per farming family. And well-off Westerners – including Cameron, and Prince Charles, Land Rover and the Cooperative Bank, who are also clients of Climate Care – can purchase this saved carbon in order to continue living the high life without becoming consumed by eco-guilt. They effectively salve their moral consciences by paying poor people to live the harsh simple life on their behalf.
Climate Care celebrates the fact that it encourages the Indian poor to use their own bodies rather than machines to irrigate the land. Its website declares: ‘Sometimes the best source of renewable energy is the human body itself. With some lateral thinking, and some simple materials, energy solutions can often be found which replace fossil fuels with muscle-power.’ (2) To show that muscle power is preferable to machine power, the Climate Care website features a cartoon illustration of smiling naked villagers pedalling on a treadle pump next to a small house that has an energy-efficient light bulb and a stove made from ‘local materials at minimal cost’. Climate Care points out that even children can use treadle pumps: ‘One person – man, woman or even child – can operate the pump by manipulating his/her body weight on two treadles and by holding a bamboo or wooden frame for support.’ (3)
Feeling guilty about your two-week break in Barbados, when you flew thousands of miles and lived it up with cocktails on sunlit beaches? Well, offset that guilt by sponsoring eco-friendly child labour in the developing world! Let an eight-year-old peasant pedal away your eco-remorse…
Climate Care has other carbon-offsetting schemes. One involves encouraging poor people who live near the Ranthambhore National Park, a tiger reserve in Rajasthan, India, to stop using firewood for their stoves, and instead to collect cowpats and water and put them into something called a ‘biogas digester’, which creates a renewable form of fuel that can be used for cooking and the provision of heat. One of the aims of this scheme is to protect the trees of the national park, as tigers are reliant on the trees. It seems that in the carbon-offsetting world, beast comes before man.
In these various scandalous schemes, we can glimpse the iron fist that lurks within environmentalism’s green velvet glove. …- http://www.spiked-online.com/index.php?/site/article/3788/

Wonder Bread run out of California for carbon diox[ide] emissions
No Wonder…
Gov. Schwarzenegger’s drive to reduce carbon dioxide emissions got a major boost this week when the makers of Wonder Bread announced the total withdrawal of their bread products from Southern California. Interstate Bakeries, the makers of Wonder Bread, Roman Meal, Home Pride and Baker’s Inn breads announced the closure of four bakeries, 17 distribution centers and 19 outlet stores, leaving 1,300 Californians out of work. The iconic breads – that had been staples of Southern California grocery stores since the 1940s – will completely disappear from shelves starting October 20th.
The parent company, Interstate Bakeries, blamed the high cost of doing business in California. The company has been losing money in California for some time, hit by a number of concerns including declining demand and non-union competitors, but their principal problem was simply California’s growing hostility to human enterprise.
Not mentioned by the company was this grim reality: Gov. Schwarzenegger’s AB 32 mandates a 25 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2020. A principal byproduct of baking bread is – you guessed it – carbon dioxide. Indeed, without carbon dioxide, there’s no such thing as bread as we know it. Bread gets its spongy texture from yeast converting glucose into equal parts of ethyl alcohol and carbon dioxide. The familiar smell of bread baking is the oxidation of the ethyl alcohol as these gases are released during heating.
But not any more. No Wonder….- http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1891406/posts

Forced Military Training for Chinese Kids is ‘Camp’ to ‘Inspire Patriotism, Teamwork and Sacrifice’
USA Today lends a big assist in promulgating Chinese propaganda as the paper helps explain away the nature of the forced military training that Chinese children undergo. Calling the compulsory training a benign sounding “camp” and presenting the children’s training as if it is a mere Summer excursion, USA Today soft sells China’s militarization of their youth in theirs titled, “Chinese kids undergo required military training.” As USA Today dutifully reports China’s propaganda — the children go there to “sing songs” with the training only meant to “bolster teamwork” — we see a disgraceful example of the MSM’s practice of not “offending” a totalitarian nation so as not to lose their “access” there. Instead of reporting the harsh truth, we have USA Today offering a sunny and happy report on Chinese warmongering.
The Chinese government forces all children between the ages of 9 and 18 to undergo military training at regular intervals during Summer break from school. They have no choice and neither do their parents. This is the sort of complete lack of freedom of choice that can be expected from a totalitarian government, of course. In the west, we decry militarizing our children by force, so isn’t it odd that USA Today so softens this training? Isn’t it shameful that the paper helps China promote the propaganda that these military training sessions are really a wonderful time for China’s youth?
BEIJING — Yang Liheng, 12, heads back to school near Beijing this week, filled with memories of camp.
It was not a summer of nature hikes and cool dips in the lake. Liheng was one of 20 million youngsters who spent up to four weeks at compulsory military camps run by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
The camps are part of a nationwide training network in which a record 50 million Chinese children ages 9 to 18 will get military education this year, according to the PLA. The program, expanded in the past year, is intended to inspire patriotism, teamwork and sacrifice in a generation of children who, for the most part, have grown up without siblings and known little hardship.
Ah, yes. Our little Yang Liheng so fondly remembering his “camp” that was only meant to “inspire patriotism, teamwork and sacrifice.” Thanks USA Today for that wonderfully heart warming report.
Heck, little Liheng got a bunch out of his fun Summer “camp.”
The highlights, he says, included singing army songs, learning self-defense and studying advanced weaponry, such as U.S. Black Hawk helicopters and aircraft carriers. The low point came when he was forced to stand rigid at attention for 20 minutes in the broiling sun because of his poor marching form.
The experience “steeled my willpower,” Liheng says. He admits, “I was afraid at first. Lots of us cried at night when we missed our parents.” …- http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1891404/posts

Concerns Affect D.C. Condom Giveaway
Tens of thousands of condoms provided free by the District to curb HIV-AIDS have been returned to the health department because of complaints that their paper packaging is easily damaged and could render the condoms ineffective.
Demand at two distribution sites in Southeast set up by nonprofit groups plummeted more than 80 percent after the condoms, in a mustard-yellow and purple wrapper, were introduced this year. More than 2,000 packets a week were scooped up in mid-March, but by late May, only 400 were being given away each week.
Volunteers concerned about why interest had dropped began asking people who had picked up the condoms. They were told about packets ripping in purses or bursting open in pockets. As a result, recipients said they had little confidence that the condoms would offer protection.
In addition, expiration dates on some of the Chinese-made condoms were illegible….- http://jacksnewswatch.com/2007/09/05/concerns-affect-dc-condom-giveaway/#comments

It was they who advised and paid for the wells that seem to have poisoned up to half the population of the country.
Let us perform a small thought experiment. Let us suppose that a commercial mining company had, in the course of its operations, poisoned the water supply of 70,000,000 people in this quite specific way. Would that have been regarded as “a sad irony”, an unintended consequence of its search for profit, or perhaps as something rather more sinister and indeed typical of the way such companies operate? Would there not have been large demonstrations, probably turning soon to violence, against that company by those in the developed world who habitually express their solidarity with the impoverished victims of exploitation by their own nations’ multinationals? It is unlikely that we would ever hear the end of the matter – in such a case, quite rightly.”

Forced Military Training for Chinese Kids is ‘Camp’ to ‘Inspire Patriotism, Teamwork and Sacrifice’

In the west, we decry militarizing our children by force, so isn’t it odd that USA Today so softens this training? There have been some ads on 640 Toronto radio today for cleanairpass.com. If you go to their site you can calculate your annual car emissions and then pay them your hard-earned after tax dollars for carbon credits to assuage your guilt for driving your car to your job to earn those dollars. They will send you a window sticker to proudly display. The questions and answers are very entertaining.
Remember that old Movie “To Catch a Thief” ?
I always thought it was more like sending a weasel into the hen house myself. But what does it mean when you send a weasel into the weasel’s den??
Can a Liberal be the best choice to deal with another pack of thieves? Is that it?

“IN the second century of the Christian era, the Empire of Rome comprehended the fairest part of the earth, and the most civilised portion of mankind. The frontiers of that extensive monarchy were guarded by ancient renown and disciplined valour. The gentle but powerful influence of laws and manners had gradually cemented the union of the provinces. Their peaceful inhabitants enjoyed and abused the advantages of wealth and luxury. The image of a free constitution was preserved with decent reverence: the Roman senate appeared to possess the sovereign authority, and devolved on the emperors all the executive powers of government.” – Edward Gibbon, Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire

In addition, expiration dates on some of the Chinese-made condoms were illegible….-

Dion would welcome chance to visit troops in Afghanistan
Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion, who continued Wednesday to hint that the government’s position on Afghanistan could trigger a fall election, says he would welcome an opportunity to visit the troops deployed to the country.
“I would be very pleased to go to Afghanistan, if it’s possible,” Dion said on CBC-TV’s Politics.
“I’m requested everywhere in Canada. In the last summer, I went in 100 events, 50 ridings, working almost day and night. So I will look at the possibility to go […] Afghanistan.” …-

Anybody check out Cleanair Pass (https://www.cleanairpass.com/)? I can’t find anything that actually indicates they are investing in real projects. The best they come up with is a statement indicating “We INTEND to source emission offsets from local sources AS THEY BECOME AVAILABLE.” Question: So what’s happening to the money in the mean time?
Their explanation of credit trading also includes this gem:
“The trading of carbon credits transfers the RIGHT TO POLLUTE from one individual or organization to another.”
Question: How did the original “right to pollute” come to be a right in the first place. Oh I know . . . I’ll bet it’s in the Charter.
It would be interesting to know who is behind this apparent scam.
“More than 70 million people in Bangladesh are estimated to be exposed to toxic levels of arsenic from their drinking water in what WHO has called the “largest mass poisoning of a population in history”.”
Rioting and protest marches planned. Er, nope, no there aren’t any protests planned.
” The sad irony is that the problem is the unintended consequence of a campaign in the 1970s and 1980s by international development organisations, including UNICEF, to get villagers to stop drinking dirty surface water.
