  1. If you go to surfacestations.org, Knight, you’ll see examples of where the hell to take temperature readings from, and how to maintain them.

  2. If the cute little dog in the picture pissed on the weather dectector post, wouldn’t that cause it to warm up?

  3. I’m not sure what the problem is with this one.
If there’s a bit of a vine on the side of it, it really shouldn’t effect the temp at all. If anything, it should be cooler by an immeasurable amount.

  4. Phantom,
Granted. But I fail to see anything that would detract in any measurable way from the accuracy of this site. If the shrubs are a bit taller, that shouldn’t make a difference that can be measusured.

  5. Ummm…I think the point is:
If standards of maintainance are not adhered to, it calls the whole program into disrepute.
Billions of dollars spent and critical policies developed with this kind of science?

  6. Warwick et al.,
The goal of surfacestations.org is to document all of the measuring stations in the US, not just those that show conditions skewing to a warmer temperature.
For the output of these stations to be of some overall good, the measurements must be shown to have been collected in like-comparable conditions. Apples to apples, so to speak.
The results of the surfacestations.org canvas is that the data collection conditions of the stations are vastly different: apples to oranges to carrots to koalas. Deriving meaningful statistics for climate measurements when the information collection system is so compromised means that the results are functionally meaningless.
This picture shows two issues that skew the output unnecessarily:
    1) the vines growing up and around the measuring box, creating extra shade (thus lower temperatures than the surrounding area);
    2) the white pole to the right looks like a sprinkler system. If this station is getting watered on a regular basis, again its output will skew down.
Because this station’s environment is not comparably controlled to match other stations, its output (temp readings) cannot meaningfully be included with the aggregate. The same goes for stations surrounded by tarmac. Apples, oranges, carrots, and koalas.
    My two cents.

  7. Has anyone noticed the plants in the background.I suspect there of the mind altering kind lol.

  8. The point of this post was the humor in the TYPE of plants growing around the station. Nothing else to see here, move along.

  9. I think that’s a weather vane and not a sprinkler. Weird to be taking wind measurements below the treeline.

  10. Warwick:
Fair enough back at ya. I wasn’t sure about the pole, so it was just speculation.

  11. From the report (at the asterick) “Height of shelter above local surface: Rain gauge installed into ground. Temperature gauge 4’ above ground, but same height as some nearby vegetation”
So did it show a wet or dry year?

  12. Does anyone have the information on the CO2 emitted from Gores world wide Rock Concert. I thought there was someone calculating the total CO2 emitted from the concert and its related activities. I thought that he was going to publish the data a few weeks after the concert. Maybe the Kyoto crowd censored him.

    ***BREAKING NEWS***
Oklahoma is experiencing a dramatic rise in acid rain, “no cause for alarm” say local climatologists, “this is just a pissin…err…passing thing”.

  14. Warwick, part of accuracy is knowing the conditions at the measuring site. If the conditions are different than they are supposed to be, the measurement will be off.
Off by how much? No idea. How much is too much when BILLIONS of dollars are being spent on climate change based on these numbers?
Point being, this is the best measurement site posted so far, and its still crap.
Then there’s my penurious Scots argument: How much is NASA paying this lazy SOB to cut the grass? Because he ain’t doing it!
These networks cost a frackin’ FORTUNE, it would be nice if they were to specification just from sheer honesty and value delivered for dollar spent, don’t you think?

  15. One other problem is the distance to the trees. They act as a wind break which is unacceptable. Like the linked document says, “Although not apparent from the photos, the owner’s house is only 30-35 feet directly east of the hardware. Also: the wind gauge is the private property of the owner. The weather station was surrounded on all four sides by deciduous trees of considerable (estimated 25’) height.” The instruments are supposed to be 4 times farther away from an obstacle like bushes or a building than the obstacle is tall.

  16. No wonder their getting such fake reading when they are deliberatly place in such locations what a bunch of scoundrels SQUAWK SQUAWK

  17. “If you go to surfacestations.org, Knight, you’ll see examples of where the hell to take temperature readings from, and how to maintain them.”
Kate, if you could learn the hell how to post a link maybe it wouldn’t be a fishing expedition to figure out what you are getting at in your posts.
An asterisk isn’t exactly descriptive – nor an internet standard. In fact, I’ve never seen a link posted with an asterisk anywhere but your site.
“The goal of surfacestations.org is to document all of the measuring stations in the US, not just those that show conditions skewing to a warmer temperature.”
But what is Kate’s goal by reporting this? Looking at the picture certainly doesn’t make me mad with rage because there really isn’t anything visually wrong with the station.

  18. TheTallDrink, what fishing expedition? The surfacestations.org link is enough. There is an example of a good weather station on the home page near the bottom. — John M Reynolds

  19. Could the right please make up their mind on how they intend to refute climate change science. First they were arguing that nothing was happening, then they were saying that temperatures are indeed changing, but its due to natural cycles or cosmic rays/solar activity, and now they want to say its not happening again.
These posts are interesting and it is a good idea to ensure that the data is accurate, but I’m still not convinced that these weather stations are typical of most. Beyond that there are a ton of other indicators to fall back on that show that temperature changes are real. Notice that I’m not saying what’s causing it, just that we need to move beyond denying that anything is happening.

  20. “Beyond that there are a ton of other indicators to fall back on that show that temperature changes are real.”
So what? And who cares! The earth temperature is changing all the time, this is called climate.
The earth has been much warmer in the past with no effect on life and biodiversity on this planet.
So I ask again, who cares is the earth is getting warmer!

When you get your own blog you can straight up the digital world, till then, don’t blow a gasket on a host’s site.
