Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

"Go back to collecting your welfare livelihood." - Michael E. Zilkowsky
That’s amazing!
I’ll have to take a picture of the next herd feeding beside oil wells.
Great pic, but darn, they must be upset. According to the eco-nuts,they aren’t smart enough to use man-made things, they just shrivel up and die. Maybe they are redneck, knuckledraggers in drag???
One of the designated “wildlife corssing corridors” the province intalled to eleviate the road kill that occurs from having a national highway/rail line cut through a park.
Interesting to note was that this solution offered by the Alberta hiways dept. was denounced by the Sierra club and various other prohibitionist wilderness cults.
The road kill mortality raye has dropped drastically in the park…sound conservationist wildlife management prevails over wilderness prohibitionist hysterics and enviro junk science every time.

They look so happy !!
I think they are saying “thanks mankind, you treat us better than most other animals.”
Maybe they’re on their way to see “An Inconvenient Truth”….
“… better than most other animals treat us”
…things you see without a shotgun
😉

WLMR…my home province of N.B. also adopted these about 20 years ago,not only above, but also below major roadways that cut across normal migratory paths. Funny thing happened. The porcupine, deer, moose, and foxes are no longer the provincial roadkill symbol.Who woulda thunk that them thar dumb critters were smarter them those big, high falutin eco-nuts and thar mouth pieces?
Funny how redneck knuckledraggers seem to know how to live and survive with nature.
way too many and causing problems, get rid of them.
According to the eco-nuts, they aren’t smart enough
I gotta agree with the eco-nuts this time. Caribou are easily the dumbest animals walking the planet. I’m surprised they’re not extinct already. I mean, anything that walks around like it’s permanently drunk…
If only they were tastier.
Those elk are crossing on an overpass that carries the CPR mainline. The overpass was built to handle double tracks, but the second set of tracks have never been laid. There have been cases when the elk time it wrong and a train arrives, they just move over to the unoccupied side.
I agree, caribou are the dumbest animals on the planet. Just go up the Dempster Highway in the Northern Yukon and you can stand among the herds and shoot as many as you like. It’s almost not sporting.
However, as many have pointed out, these are elk, and are marginally smarter than caribou.
great

How dare you take that honour away from the leftards/socialists!!!! They will be coming for you!
I don’t doubt the stupidity of elk or caribou, but I am certain if “done right” (not “left” please…), it is an excellent dinner.

I have heard of some restaurants offering caribou regularly…. notably “The Post Hotel” at Lake Louise.
I drove under that overpass every weekday for a month As previously mentioned the overpass Was Not built as a wildlife corridor however there is a field about 1 km West from here that the elk like to hang out in it is located where the rail line and the road into the “industrial park” (compound Rd) cross

Only in Canada eh!
“way too many and causing problems, get rid of them.
To what are you refering, Doug? Ecologists? Sierra Club members? Al Gore snowstorms?
“If you will build it, they will come.” is the phrase that came to my head.
Humans do treat the rest of the critters on the planet better than everyone other animal. When was the last time the wolves created a wildlife preserve?
“way too many and causing problems, get rid of them.”
This actualy is quite true. Although not quite as bad as back in the 80’s.
Just off the end of this bridge (CPR main line as stated) there is a meadow where the parks department has been feeding the Elk,also there is a salt lick there.
I remember back in the 80’s though, sitting in the Keg on main street watching the other tourists being chased by rutting Elk. Don’t try this at home!!
Ah, well, I just got back from another week end spent in Banff. No place like it!!
Cheers
CPR mainline? Doesn’t that result in a lot of railroadkill?
I happen to find caribou very tasty. Herding animals never are at the top of the food chain because of their “herding” smarts.
The motto of these animals is that “you don’t have to be faster than the wolf, just faster than your buddy beside you”.
Used to hear from relatives who worked on the CN mainline from Jasper to Prince George. They said the winter moose kill on the rails was horrific; about 1100 animals per season. Does anyone know if CN has found a solution?
Gunney99 in the pre Trudeaupian eras they used cow catchers.
I understand that the ALASKA OIL PIPELINE is a gathering place for wildlife in the winter they realy like all that warmth
