The federal New Democrats want Canada to take a lead role in any UN mission to stop the bloodshed in Sudan’s Darfur province, even if that means scaling back its commitment in Afghanistan.
NDP Leader Jack Layton pointed to a weekend poll that suggested public support for Canada’s Afghan mission is wavering.
A majority of those polled opposed Canada’s effort there, compared with a similar poll in March that found only about 40 per cent against the mission.
Layton said a major Canadian commitment to a UN mission in Darfur, where at least 180,000 people have died and millions are refugees because of a bitter civil war, would likely get much broader public backing. “Our view is that this is exactly the kind of peacekeeping role that Canadians have always supported,” Layton said Sunday. “Canada invented the concept of UN-led peacekeeping forces under (then diplomat Lester) Pearson” in the 1950s.

“We’ve heard varying reports out of our military regarding our capacities here,” he said. “So that is, of course, one of the key questions to be asked.
“But I think that Canadians would want us to be in Darfur. That sentiment is found right across the country.”

Chinese strike aircraft and Russian helicopter gunships have been photographed at three airports in Darfur. Their presence violates UN Resolution 1591, which banned Sudan from transferring any weaponry to Darfur without the Security Council’s official permission.
Both Russia and China approved the passage of the resolution in March 2005. But Amnesty’s new report finds that both countries went on to breach the very arms embargo they were party to imposing.
China sold arms and ammunition worth £12 million to Sudan in 2005, along with spare parts worth £30 million for military aircraft.
In the same year, Russia sold helicopter gunships worth almost £7 million to the Khartoum regime. Belarus, a close ally of Russia, exported 32 heavy artillery guns and nine armoured fighting vehicles. China also sold six K8 training aircraft to Sudan’s air force. Another six of these jet planes, which could be used for ground attack missions, are due to be delivered soon.

In addition, Sudan’s air force routinely employs Antonov 26 transport aircraft – all made in Russia – as heavy bombers. At least one of these planes has been sprayed with white paint and given fake “UN” markings in order to disguise it as a UN aircraft.
Of course, the CTV report isn’t all that clear. It may well be that the NDP’s version of “peacekeeping” in Darfur would see Canada allied with the Sudanese government.
And I had to listen to co-op radio 102.7 (Vancouver) this morning where they were talking about how Canadian soldiers are “slaughtering” civilians in Afghanistan. The reporter closed by saying he supports the insurgents against our cowardly forces. Would be nice if someone digitally recorded some of these finer broadcasts.

May I refer you to the relevant UN Security Council resolutions (the first on Afstan adopted unanimously, the second on Darfur with China, Qatar and the Russian Federation abstaining)? The one regarding Dafur requires the acquiescence of the Sudanese government, still very much in doubt, for the introduction of a significant UN force. The point of Kate’s post is about those who support the Sudanese government for economic reasons and who frustrate–very frustrating in any case–UNSC decision making. But at least the decisions about Afstan have been, repeatedly, made.

I let Taliban Jack know what I thought of him when I took about 5 unwanted letters I’d gotten from him, marked them as “unsolicited commie propaganda – return to sender” after first ensuring they were addressed to Taliban Jack bin Layton and dropped them in a mailbox.
The only way Canadian troops would be able to get to Darfur is if the US provided sea and air transport and air support for the mission. Given that the Russians are arming the Sudanese government, I doubt they would rent Antonov aircraft to the Canadian military for this mission. Once there the Canadian troops would likely be villified by the same NDP that wants them there as they’d probably have to kill a lot of people who are unlikely to stop fighting just because “peacekeepers” have arrived in the region.
Various tribal groups have been killing each other in Africa for centuries. The best thing might be to just quarentine Africa for a while until the survivors decide they are interested in doing something else. The only interventions should be to destroy Al quada or similar islamofascist groups. Right now the only threats to western civilization from Africa have been Nigerian internet scams and HIV+ immigrants. Both of these threats are easy to deal with and don’t require Canadian soldiers getting killed.

I agree with Kingstonlad in that there is some hope in Africa.
Despite all the wasted aid and dictatorial razmataz – and western stupidity – and the implied belief of our superiority over Africans – progress is happening.
Not only in Ethiopia, but Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, are all starting to become stabilized.
Even Libya, with the completion of the huge underground man-made river project to tap the massive aquifers under the desert, is transforming desert into agri land – and trying to move beyond oil and gas dependence.
China is obviously looking for their next oil fix in Africa and will sidle up to any dictator or screwed up government turning a blind eye to genocide to – probably – control oil/gas rich land.
The other good news is that Ethiopia is turning into an African peaceMAKER. They now have one of the largest military capabilities in Africa. They intervened in Somalia and rightly so. I don’t think they will stand the Sudan for very long if the region is threatened with de-stabilization.
The Sudanese Gov’t needs to held accountable for this genocide and I think the way the US is handling it is the right way.
The thing about peacekeeping that Taliban Jack forgets is that peacekeeping brought us such successes as 30+ years in Cyprus (no resolution), 28 years in the Sinai (no resolution), 16 years in Bosnia (including the massacre at Srebrenica and the UN pulling out with it’s tail between its legs and leaving it to the big boys (NATO) to sort out), Haiti x1 x2 x3, Rwanda…

I’m no friend of the NDP, having lived a decade of despair under their governance here in BC – including a brief period with Mr. Dosanj as Premier (un-elected).
But for the record, he did speak out consistently and loudly agains the Sikh troublemakers. For his trouble he was severely beaten and had to be hospitalized.
I vehemently disagree with Mr. Dosanj on nearly every issue, including his flirtations with the communist party of Canada – but on this issue, he did ‘walk the walk.
