  1. I’m outraged by the tone of your post, Kate. I fail to see the joke, or any previous jokes, or what you’re getting at, and will continue to do so, and I assure you that this lack of understanding will never deplete itself.
I’d like to comment, though, on this whole mollusc thing: Although we don’t know how many Physella johnsoni lived in the hotsprings before the swimmer came, we DO know the swimmer killed at least five of them. In other words, it could have been more.
Does this make you laugh, Kate? And if it was five Donald Rumsfelds, would you feel differently about it?
These rare molluscs deserve protection because of their uniqueness, in that they were not used to the rigors of the wild: They lived in a hot springs.
That’s why we have guardians right there who count molluscs.
Alright? See what I mean? Okay?

  2. I too am absolutely outraged. Outraged that Rumsfeld has been compared to a snail. What tripe!

  3. Outraged, indeed! We know that the truly accurate snail metaphoric comparison is with a large number of prominent Canadian Liberals and American Democrats.

  4. “A vandal who broke into Banff ‘s Cave and Basin National Historic Site and swam in an ecologically sensitive hot spring has killed at least five endangered snails.”
    Was the vandal Sheryl Crow?
Using the hot springs instead of bidet?

  5. This is obviously a case of class discrimination, pure and simple. Why do these snails enjoy the privilege of living in a protected area while thousands of others have to fend for themselves?
Well, just look at their name.Johnsoni eh? Yup, that
name just identifies these little elitists as Ango-Saxon. we all know the origin of the Johnson name and it’s WASPish roots.
I though society had gotten beyond this type of discrimination. A devastating outrage!

  6. In support of the agreived mollusks, I’m going to wear a symbol on my lapel. The closest thing I can find at the moment is a small booger.
    I’ll keep looking though.

  7. I’ve been to the springs basin and had I known there was a species of mollusk that willingly threw itself into boiling sulpherous water I would have brought the French chef from the hotel and gotten a meal out of this suicidal mollusk behavior.
You say they’re migrating to Calgary now? Not sure where suicidal gourmand delicacies can get a job in the prime rib capital of Canada but they may find a cozey Swiss restaurant that may take them in.

  8. “The snails have dark eyes and a shell that spirals to the left. (Most snails have shells that spiral to the right ).”
… spirals to the left? Hmmm …
    Cheers

  9. cant Sheryl Crowe dip her bum in the water to add some much needed nutrients? help the other 33995 along.
5 snails, the horror , the horror.
next thing will be people in darfur. where will it end. please Al Gore stop all the killing.

  10. Forgive me if I am wrong but hasn’t this happened before? Without doing a search I seem to recall a similar incident back at the turn of the century. Gee, that sounds wierd “turn of the century”.
