In an act of brazen political opportunism, Canadian government negotiations with the United Arab Emirates to join the fight against the Taliban have been made public;
The NDP, with the willing collaboration of the press, has engaged in an astonishing act of sabotage. Because they disagree with the government’s policy, and because they were presented with the opportunity by a careless government employee, they decided to pull the rug out from under this negotiation and undercut whatever chances it had of succeeding.
The disclosure was also illegal. Read the whole thing.

The more it changes, the more it stays the same. Read some of the Tommy Douglas speeches in the House of Commons in the mid-late thirties.
Same kind of brainless nonsense.

Muslim Brotherhood Leader Calls for Attacks Against West
While the Muslim Brotherhood’s Western enablers mount an Islamist charm offensive in the US, doing their best to portray the world’s most pervasive Islamic supremacist group as “moderate” and “non-violent,” back home in Egypt the “general guide” of the Brotherhood, Muhammad Mahdi ‘Akef, is calling for attacks against the US and Israel.

Jim Whitehammer:
The small dead minds here are too busy frothing at the mouth to listen to common sense.
This whole story is just another Conservative smear tactic to try and make an opposition party look bad. Dear Fat Leader can’t get his party’s polling numbers up so he’s trying a different version of negative advertising.
lberia,
There is no need to fabricate stories to make the opposition look bad both Layton and Dion do a magnificent job of that all on their own.
Like this story for example.
I am afraid trying to smear the left would be like kicking a skunk. The smell of corruption and deceipt is already so strong getting too close just soils our clothes.
When the moles name is public, the spys name will be also. To all of us who have written to papers or e-mailed, or phoned the ndp offices, please let us know if letters are published or calls and e-mails responded to. Bet few, if any are. Just have to keep their in boxes filled and their message machines filled.
Can I bring some sense to the people here or is this impossible? Like all documents released under ATI there should be a big stamp in the top left corner that say “Released under ATIA, information unclassified” it then becomes a public document available to EVERYONE, no restrictions whatsoever.
For those alleging some sort of bureaucratic conspiracy, keep in mind that Gordon O’Connor’s office has to approve every page of every document released. That’s right, a conservative staffer saw this document and knowingly released it to the NDP.
By the way, what is the “Freedom of Information Act” that you keep referring to? it’s called the Access to Information Act.
If you are so mad you can contact O’Connor’s office 613 996 3100 or DND ATIP, toll free 1 888 272-8207 or atip@forces.gc.ca
lberia: Whatever you may think, Damian Brooks of “The Torch” (where I also post) is not, as far as I know, a partisan Conservative–though I suspect he is small “c” as I am.
The Conservative Party has zero to do with what appears at “The Torch”. I have never been contacted by the party; I don’t know about Damian but I doubt it.
“The Torch”, when Damian set it up just over a year ago, was intended to be a non-partisan blog dealing with Canadian defence issues. I, when posting, have certainly taken the Conservatives to task when I thought it justified. A couple of examples (there are more):
“The Goose Bay boondoggle”
toyoufromfailinghands.blogspot.com/2006/10/goose-bay-boondoggle.html
“Stupid Conservative defence promises”
toyoufromfailinghands.blogspot.com/2006/08/stupid-conservative-defence-promises.html
However the absolute and craven disregard of the NDP for facts about Afstan, and the morally bankrupt tergiversations of the Liberals on the issue, have driven Damian and me to be perhaps rather more political in posting than had been the goal. Needs must.

Mark:
Another poster here, Jim Whitehammer, has given a detailed explanation of why this issue has nothing to do with the NDP being “traitors.” Regardless of whether or not Damian is taking his cues from the CPC, he is wrong to accuse the NDP of sabotage. If he is angry about the release of this information, he should direct his anger towards the people who initially authorized the release. Otherwise this just looks like another CPC orchestrated smear.
iberia: “…this just looks like another CPC orchestrated smear.” Can you not accept the very strong likelihood that it is not? That individuals get, for their own personal reasons, very upset over what the opposition parties in this country are doing? Have you even bothered to take a look at “The Torch”?
toyoufromfailinghands.blogspot.com/
This is what Damian wrote about the Conservatives and Thursday’s “debate” on Afstan:
toyoufromfailinghands.blogspot.com/2007/04/because-some-liberals-think-its-good.html
“The Conservatives summoned all the outrage and hyperbole they could muster, and hurled it across the Commons. They were offended. They were righteous. They were patriotic. They were mostly buffoons.”
This was my quick summary:
toyoufromfailinghands.blogspot.com/2007/04/choose-your-churchill.html
“The House debate on the Liberal motion to end the combat mission as of February, 2009, was relentlessly partisan, generally dismal in quality, and mostly ill-informed.”
As to the Conservatives:
toyoufromfailinghands.blogspot.com/2007/04/if-everything-goes-according-to-plan-in.html
“The government, from what I saw, failed to hammer home the “exit strategy” that Minister of National Defence O’Connor has outlined. I cannot but wonder why.”
Do you think the Conservatives “orchestrated” that?

“Can you not accept the very strong likelihood that it is not?”
Yes, I can. That’s why I said it “looks” like a smear, not that it “is.”
iberia: The situation remains that the post can only look like a Conservative smear if you have not taken the trouble to examine the source.
Clearly you did not. There are arguments that can reasonably be made, but yours are made only out of attitude, ignorance and laziness.

Guess who gave the NDP the info about the talks with the United Arab Emirates? …. the Harper Government!
“Documents obtained by the opposition New Democrats, UNDER ACCESS TO INFORMATION LAWS, indicate that Col. Fred Lewis, deputy commander of Task Force Afghanistan, met Emirates military staff over a five-day period in January to discuss “the feasibility of a bilateral agreement.”
-International Herald Tribune-

—————–
Okay, the NDP had information on the discussions between Canada and United Arab Emirates – and they got the documents from … the GOVERNMENT OF CANADA!!
Yup .. they paid their $10 and filled out an FOI (freedom of information) form and took the papers to the House and asked a question.
And you want to put blindfolds on people – stand them up against a wall – and kill them??
Nutso city over here folks!!
‘Loose lips sink ships’ – Jacko and liddy would have been sent to the jailhouse in the 1960s they would have been sent to the gallows in the 1940’s.
Who do these fools think they are? Do they really think that we will tolerate having our countries war plans blasted all over the globe for our enemies to use? How many soldiers could die because of their treasonous stupidity? Why should we allow them to be in the HOC? IMO they must be removed from the HOC and access to the airwaves at once. What else do they know? These people are not honorable and no ‘fault’ whitewashing can remove the ugly yellow stain. My country has been attacked from the inside- he who attacks Canadian soldiers attacks all of us – these two and anyone else who is too fanatical and stupid to know when to keep their mouths shut, must be shut up – in a sound proof room in a jailhouse.
Jema are you talking about the Federal Goverment’s loose lips for giving the information to the NDP through a freedom of information request? Why are you still frothing at the mouth????????
those guys (NDP) are from iran!!!!
they want us dead!
Which “spy” mary t? Let’s have a name.

Iberia what’s you name?
leftdog – you only read one line of my post. Nothing excuses them; and I ask the question again: what other confidential information do these two have access to? ALL MP’s are surmised to be loyal to THIS country. Our soldiers should never be comprimised for cheap politial propaganda.
Or..is that okay in your world?
George, you can call me Lavrenty.
Mark:
Your pal Damian over reacted. Now you’re over reacting in your defence of him.
Take a deep breath, hold it, and when you exhale say “ommmm.” Repeat 10 times. Now, doesn’t that feel better?
what other confidential information do these two have access to?
As citizens of Canada, “these two” have the same access as all who are willing to file an Access to Information (ATI) request and pay the nominal fee.
In case it hasn’t been made clear already, it’s the Department of National Defence, in accordance with Canadian law, that has placed (quite rightly) this information in the public domain.
The phrase “confidential information,” furthermore, appears nowhere in the CP story and, frankly, amounts to question-begging: if the department’s officials had good grounds to withhold the information about the meeting, they would have done so, again in accordance with the law.
That they did not withhold the information suggests it was neither confidential nor sensitive: indeed, if the CP story is correct in its recounting of the situation report of Brig-Gen Tim Grant, the Canadian government *would want* people to know about the UAE’s Afghanistan involvement because, according to the report, it would “provide a Muslim face to International Security Assistance Force operations, providing a counterpoint to insurgent rhetoric.”
Sadly, the overreaction of posters on this site bespeaks an almost total lack of familiarity with the ATI process, as routinely facilitated by DND.
Too bad for those interested in informed discussion of the issue.
here is his handle
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lavrenty_Beria
these are his spouts.
now turn lberia over
and his brain pour out.
…and I thought lberia’s real name was TRAITOR!!!
It isn’t just ATI staff that review these things, in every Department someone from the Minister’s office reviews each page before approving their release.
True, but even so I do wonder if from time to time something slips past due to the volume of requests that come in on the Afghanistan file. I know at some dept’s/agencies staffers working on Afghanistan are spending at least as much time trying to process ATI requests as working on their standard duties – the former comes first owing to legislated timelines and political optics – and I can imagine a stray boner getting through.
Traitors (both media and politicians) should be tied to a poll, given a blindfold and a cigarette and shot at dawn.
That we no longer execute traitors was step one in our decline as a people and a nation.
Electing the traitors just sealed the deal.
For the record, i checked out the comments section of this post because i was pretty sure (given this site’s track record for ignorance and delusion) that the NDP really didn’t do anything illegal. And dammit if i didn’t turn out to be right about that.
And regardless of the fact that absolutely nothing was illegal or treasonous, right-wing goofballs remain insistent that their political enemies be lined up and shot.
Keep on typing your hateful, murderous, deluded ravings. More evidence to show the rest of Canada how the brains of Harperlovers are shrivelled, ugly, poisonous things.
