  10. Read today that Opposition has re-written Clean Air Act, which now includes Kyoto compliance with carbon credits. Just who is spoiling for an election? Nice trick, change government legislation where is original bill totally revised, then blame Tories for triggering election. Tories at or near majority territory. Clean Air Act, and Green Plan following as election issues; it doesn’t get better than this. I can’t wait for Dion to trip over his tongue, explaining how Tories engineered own defeat, then placing himself on full view for as yet unengaged electorate. Priceless.
    I think the Libs secretly want election, even though they know they are going to lose, with larger Tory minority their best hope. Then they can get rid of Dionsky. NDP totally out to lunch, watching Greens and Grits nip at their vote base. Duceppe clearly thinks he can use environment and Afghan (issues Dionsky thinks he can use – what a miscalculation) to shore up Bloc support. He couldn’t care less about ROC.
    Yes, there will be a spring election, Virginia; and the opposition has given the Tories exactly what they need to call one.
    Harper probably can’t believe his luck.

    While over at Capt C’s blog I also noticed a chart that tracked the amount of government benifits per dollar of tax. Talk about bang for the buck, the bottom 20% of the herd reap $14.00+ for every buck of taxes. Mmmmm.

    -Barely a month ago I was in Montreal chatting with a newshound well known for his political instincts. He was predicting a political minority for Jean Charest with Mario Dumont holding the balance of power. I thought he was crazy.-
    (Hmmmm, not very astute to not seriously consider all of the ‘what ifs’ in this election Sheila.)
    -The campaign was all Mario, all the time. Some of his candidates were fired or rebuked in mid-campaign for denigrating comments about women, Jews and immigrants. –
    (IMO this is just the now REQUIRED Liberal boiler plate racist and sexist allusion.)
    -Like other Canadians, Quebecers are dead set against another referendum right now. They are also fed up with politicians more interested in fighting each other than in working together. –
    (Have some more Liberal whine.)
    -Dumont talked roads, regions, hospitals and schools, bread and butter issues broadly identified as the Canadian Tire vote. Sprinkle that with a bit of demagogy under the guise of “reasonable accommodation” and you have a volatile combination. –
    (And have some Liberal cheese. Canadian Tire vote is a good term. At least Ms. Copps is one Liberal who ‘try’s not to call Conservatives rednecks. /s)
    -Dumont combines political savvy with a dose of missionary zeal.-
    (Throw in the required Liberal reference to Conservatives and Christian religious traditions.)
    -Boisclair, trapped in his own party’s separatist agenda, made a referendum promise that sealed his own fate. That albatross, coupled with his Montreal metrosexual image, spelled an end to his political ambitions. –

  17. Yes, NCF TO, Harper has made his own luck with a coherent policy approach, bolstered with passed legislation, and leadership on the key issues of national security, environment and economy. Dionsky, however, is giving him some freebies, such as the ridiculous Kyoto rewrite of Clean Air Act and the denial of LPC that their leader will never be PM.
    Liberals, at best, will be reduced to big city party. If all your vote is concentrated in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal, yes you will get lots of seats, but low Tory vote, 35-40% could still give them majority. Add to that the undoubted, IMHO, disaster that awaits LPC, known as debates, and there is not hope for Libs.
    Voters, upon seeing Dion, will withdraw their support. Then we will see what the true LPC core vote, who would vote for them if Clifford Olson was their leader. Conventional wisdom puts that at 25%, so still formidable; but we will see.

To compete, GL&V — a global leader in technology that separates liquids and solids for mining, pulp-and-paper and water treatment facilities — does some things a bit differently. Its corporate office is in Montreal, but the CEO works from his Florida condo. His three vice-presidents are in the U.K. and India; his son Richard, the president, is in the United States. GL&V outsources most of its manufacturing and is a “virtual company,” Mr. Verreault says.
    The good news for Quebec is that it remains the official home of this dynamic growing firm. The bad news: Just 270 of GL&V’s 2,500 employees are in Quebec. A decade ago, most of its staff was based in the province. Look around Quebec and its new corporate stars, such as Gildan Activewear Inc. or the newly merged Domtar Inc., look like GL&V: The head offices are here, but most of the jobs are elsewhere.
    After all, why would you create jobs in an underproductive, overtaxed and highly unionized province when “I can hire an engineer in India for $7,000 a year?” as Mr. Perreault bluntly puts it.
    With Monday’s historic election, Quebecers seem to have woken up, finally, to a few harsh realities that many in the business community have warned about for years.

    Checks will be made on all children to identify potential criminals under a further extension of the “surveillance state” announced by Tony Blair today.
    Mr Blair began his premiership promising to be tough on crime
    A Downing Street review of law and order policy also called for greater use of sophisticated CCTV, an expanded DNA database and “instant justice” powers for police.
    The review is intended to chart a course ahead for the next 10 years by focusing more “on the offender, not the offence.”
    Most crime is committed by a small number of prolific offenders who could be identified almost from birth, ministers believe. After 10 years concentrating on tougher sentences, the review paper said it wanted to tackle the “underlying causes..through better targetting.”
    Vulnerable children and those at risk will be identified by “trigger” factors such as parents in jail or on drugs. They will be subject to personalised measures, including home visits from specialist practitioners. But the Government says the net should be cast as widely as possible “to prevent criminality developing.”
    It proposes to “establish universal checks throughout a child’s development to help service providers to identify those most at risk of offending.” The document added: “These checks should piggyback on existing contact points such as the transition to secondary schools.”
    The plan will be beacked up by a new database for all children due to be up and running by 2008. It will contain basic information identifying the child and its parents and will have a “facility for practitioners to indicate to others that they have information to share, are taking action, or have undertaken an assessment, in relation to a child.”

    Dion insisted the full platform will be ready whenever Harper engineers the defeat of his minority government.
    “He said the party will have full slate of candidates in all 308 ridings and that a third of them will be women, as he’s promised.
    “It would be a mistake to give up any province, any region, any riding,” he said, noting that a wave of support could cause many ridings that currently seem unwinnable to fall into the Liberal column.
    However, asked if that assertion means the Liberals will run a candidate against Green party Leader Elizabeth May, Dion clammed up, saying he had nothing to announce.
    Speculation is rife that Dion and May, who intends to run against Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay in Central Nova, are cooking a deal to work together in some ridings, including hers.
    “I will not deny what is already in the news … that there are talks between us,” Dion said.

    Problem is, it’s not “his” home. It’s the government’s residence for the PM, and Paul Martin didn’t really do any better at running it green.
    As the article indicates, the house is 140 years old, drafty, and the complex totals 21,800 square feet. It’s no wonder it uses huge amounts of energy. If he did try to do the costly major renovations necessary to make such a building efficient, would he not get flack for either the expenditures or for changing such a heritage building?
