While his pronunciation of the English language may be as mangled as a cat in a combine, Stephane Dion does show a knack for tapping into long held Western Canadian metaphors…
“I’m not there to kill the growth, I’m there to make the growth sustainable,” he said. “I don’t want to kill the milk cow. But I want to make sure that the milk will still be good and there for our grandchildren.”
Just as it was for his grandparents.

Aptly put.
This man is either content writing off Western Canada for Liberal support or unbelievably ill-informed about our history and issues. I tend to believe the latter – judging by the fact that he so willingly voices such comments.
…how does the saying go?
“Nothing new under the sun.”
Yup.
There’s that concept again “sustainable development”…and the umpteenth time I’ve heard it from Dion……cummon Steve, pull the mask off and admit what you are and what the agenda is. Dione is a perfect watermellon…green on the outside and red at the core.
Folks whenever you hear that toss-off phrase “sustainability” or “sustainable development” in relation to federal resource/land policies it’s coming from someone who has bought into the UN’s global socialist agenda of centralizing land use and defacto ownership in government.
The phrase was seldom used before it appeared in the UN’s agenda 21 blueprint for centralized control of resources. It is used as plecbo verbiage for central government control of private property, resources and land use…and it comes from right out of the UN agenda 21 plan to subvert the private property laws of sovereign nations….Dion is a UN socialist…never forget that. He has Moe Strong’s arm up his tuckass making his lips move.
http://www.sovereignty.net/p/gov/stevenyates-6.html
I can see Dion will be as popular in the west as a warble outbreak.
“I’m not there to kill the growth, I’m there to make the growth sustainable,” he said. “I don’t want to kill the milk cow. But I want to make sure that the milk will still be good and there for our grandchildren.”
Leave it to a French commie to talk about other people’s milk like it was his own.
he said that???
why anyone west of ontario would vote for dion now is totally beyond me.
the equivalent of harper going to quebec and saying the english won the plains of abraham
oce again, i cant believe you would have a liberal mp west of ontario after that
My personal favorite is Dion’s assertion that people working in the oilsands are earning “easy money” and that this “is not good for the economy”.
I suppose teaching sociology at the University of Montreal for 11 years must have qualified Citoyen Dion to pontificate on what jobs constitute “easy money”. Obviously he must have performed, for example, much heavy machinery repair at -40 in the UofM faculty lounge.
The original caption for this political cartoon was “Fed in the West, milked in the East and evacuates [syn.] on the Maritimes.”
The first time I saw it was in the early 1960s. The artistry suggests that it was drawn early in the 1900s.
Nothing has changed.
“why anyone west of ontario would vote for dion now is totally beyond me”.
There will be lots of people votong for Dion west of Ontario, due to the fact the west is booming. The eastern(ontario) dunderheads are going west for the big bucks and will import their leftist views of “big government controlling our pityful lives is good for the collective concience of our nation”….remember those Star Trek bad guys the Borg? Thats what Ontario is…..one big red/liberal/dipper collective that believes anything big brother says.
I personally subcribe to what my grand daddy taught me…..if it smells like shite…it’s shite!
I’m surprised nobody escorted the French citizen out of the province with a gun.
Listening to Citoyen Dion is like listening to re-runs of the Moe Strong saga. This man is dangerous to Canadians.
Classic Kate! Where do you get this stuff?! BTW…odie don’t give up on all of out here in Lib La La’tario.
What an absolutely perfect political cartoon. Says it Exactly.
WLyonMackenzieRedux – I fully agree with both your posts.
When Dion talks about the milk being ‘good for our grandchildren’ – he means for the Quebecois. Remember, by the way, that Quebec is, by federal law, privileged as dairy producers in Canada. They alone are allowed the produce the most milk and cream products; not the West.
As for Dion’s reference to Alberta oil work as ‘easy money’ – he has insulted each and every worker in the country.
But again, he’s not interested in votes from the West. His agenda is basic. He wants to get votes in the Maritimes, in Quebec and Ontario. To hell with the West. He’s not interested in it except as ‘food’ for the East. Exactly as shown in the cartoon.
To get these votes, he has to show Quebec that he, not the Bloc or the CPC, can get them access to Alberta’s money. His agenda is to pick up seats from the Bloc. If he gets seats in Quebec and Ontario – he can form a gov’t with that area alone.
To get the Ontario and urban Quebec vote, he also has to show himself as a member of the Kyoto Religion.
Those are his two tactics to get votes. In Ontario and in Quebec.
I’m not sure exactly how to deal with these two malicious and amoral tactics he’s using to gain Power. Above all, don’t give in to the East. I think the West has to stand firm, be very vocal, be constantly vocal – and refuse to be used.
has it changed?….considerably….if you think the west is as it was 100 years ago you have missed something.
has political power caght up, not totally…next census and seat distribution does that.
census was just done last year, results this year and the redistribution should be in a couple more years.
it will be interesting since as others have pointed out the pop of the west is probably better than than que…..how they are going to deal with the seat dist will be interesting….but ont. is underrepped in seats as well.
slow inexorable and inevitable shift. i truely believe the shift to senate reform will come after that when quebec really loses power in the commons….when you can reasonably expect a majority without quebec representation it will be a real bucket of coldwater. Quebecers will either want to retreat and seperate or they will try to make sure they back the right horse.
Stephane The Dummy says, “But I want to make sure that the milk will still be good and there for our grandchildren.”
I’m just curious about whose grandchildren he’s talking about.
His comment’s a bit like Hilary Cleenton’s, that it takes a village to raise “our” children.
I’ve always wondered just who in this village, Hilary thinks, is going to raise the children unless there are some women who still stay home in the ‘hood to keep a watch over them. Hilary and the women she champions can’t be found anywhere near hearth and home–but she seems to expect OTHER women who do keep the home fires burning will raise the kids.
So typical of a l/Liberal. So who’s grandchildren are we talking about here, Stephane? Yours? All the babies that havne’t been born because of the Liberals’ ‘generous’ and misplaced abortion policies?
I don’t follow your line of reasoning…
A cartoon from a-way back. Still true today as far as the Media is concerned. And that is the problem. Because, whenever I am in Ontario I find that it is not the people that have this attitude. Not many politicians either and certainly not many businesses. It is the Media that fosters and perpetuates the conflict. It’s good for THEIR business.
Trudeau and Lalonde’s NEP (National Energy Policy) was a big milk cow. However, Dion’s strategy will not work in this day and age. There are lots of ‘Albertas’ now. NFLD, Sask, NS, BC, Manitoba. Lesser scale yes, but still.
The UN Maurice Strong’s Kyoto is the ‘Mother of all Milk Cows’. Dion did not think up ‘milk cow’ on his own. He did not remember it from the 80s either. Wasn’t folklore in all things France. He brought it up because he was directed to. By Desmarais, Power Corp, Strong, Chretien, Lalonde, ect, but mostly with a wink from our beloved divisive Media and the reporter hacks. IMO.
Maybe even the owners of TWN… below;

I have seen the earlier caption as well; do not know if it was changed for PC reasons or because the Atlantic provinces are now milkers as well…
The dairy industry is almost completely controlled by quebec Companies. In the case of butter try and find one large Canadian Dairy Company today that doesn’t get it’s butter stock from quebec. I stand corrected on this point as it’s been years since reading that but I did some research at the time and found that to be mostly the case. Going a way back, to the late 50’s early 60’s, does anyone out there remember an article about the dairy industry dumping excess butter stock in the ocean off Newfoundland to protect prices?
The cartoon say’s it all.
Just the fact that Dion is beating “green” issues to death shows that Liberals are out of ideas. This man is a gift to the Conservatives.
First time I saw this cartoon was back in the 60’s in a farm paper. It makes its appearance every so often, but it is still true. This time dion has cut off more than he can chew. Doesn’t he know cows are supposed to be the biggest contributor to ghg. Somebody should educate that man. Anyone remember an episode of This Hour Has 7 days, where some woman was showing how to diaper a cow, to stop some smell problem in areas built up around farms. I am not making that up.
WC, yes I remember, and they also dumped milk.
Is it too much to ask for the LPC to choose a leader that can actually speak English intelligibly? Seriously. I spent six years in a French immersion school system as a youth, speak rudimentary French, and I still can’t understand a damn thing Dion says. I have to read the news online after catching Dion on television to find the translation of what he said.
I suppose this is what I get for speculating that nobody would ever be able to top Cretin’s mangled English.
I was present last night at the Calgary ” Town Shakedown ” . Anyone who thinks Cretien has problems with spoken English , think again . Dion seemed capable ( barely ) with his canned garbage , as soon as any minor thought was required , he mangled it . Harper will eat him alive in any English language debate . The only reason he came to Calgary was for fundraising . In his own words ” …we need MONEY ” . All hail Group Action … I mean Participaction .
Shouldn’t the cow be crapping somewhere? like on Labrador and Newfoundland for instance.
Can you imagine some Pr!(k coming into Alberta and telling the guys on the rigs that it’s easy money and bad for the economy? And being able to smile and show white? And right after that to refer to Alberta as the Milk Cow!!!
Someone said it much better earlier on another thread, that the sole purpose of this is to create division, East against West and in so doing gain seats in the vote rich Que/Ont. areas.
The guy may be a scum bag, but his handlers are not stupid. The West gets pissed off, disses his English and how stupid the French are and Zot!!! Division and he’s a hero in Quebec.
More here with this Cretin/Mo boy than meets the eye, and none of it good.

Thank you, I was wondering if it was my memory playing tricks. About the same time as I recall they also slapped a huge import duty on shoes to protect quebec’s Bata Shoes. Coming across the border a few years back I was a little over my limit and was hit with a 40% duty on shoes I had bought, that was with free trade in effect. Wonder if they ever did away with that one?

BTW…odie don’t give up on all of out here in Lib La La’tario.
I have not given up on Ontario VF, I am in the Ottawa area myself, who by the way voted in the most conservatives in Ontario…my riding included!
I was just trying to make the point that the Hypogrits from Ontario will for damn sure go to AB take the big money and reap the benefits from the oil industry…yet still bitch and moan about how AB is destroying the climate and complain how the west wants to ruin their Canada!
WC, I didn’t pay anything for the shoes I bought in Vegas last year, and what ever happened to Bata shoes. We should all blitz the cbc and ask them when they are going to quit working as working for easy money is bad for the economy, and it was their tingod that said that. Guess it is just employees at the cwb that do stressful work. By his own admission, that means all senators should resign yesterday, as that is certainly easy money. Oh, I forgot, he said work and they don’t. And remember, don’t travel to Toronto as cdns get killed there.

I believe that the cartoon was done by Arch Dale of the Winnipeg Free Press. That would probably date it in the early 1920s.
Let’s hope that Western “easy money” remark will stick to Dion and the Libs like “shit” sticks to a to a blanket!
Are you listening Dave Rutherford or John Gormley!!
Tomaz says;”Nothing new under the sun”
I say; “The only good thing that ever came out of the east IS the sun”.
yes odie…I know EXACTLY what you mean! And their minds are made up…’Harper from Alberta…bad’
Speaking of milk and milk cows, is this the milk that Stephane Dion is talking about? Quebec already has a disproportunate share of the industrial milk quotas across Canada. Did you ever wonder why you see Lactantia butter in stores and restaurants across the west? Have you ever seen western produced butter in Quebec? This regulation of milk quotas was begun in 1996, and for all I know may have been fair at that time, but just as the western drift of populations has made representation by population in the federal government grossly unfair to the west, and Ontario, so has it made the allocation of milk quotas unfair. Just look at the Market Sharing Quota by provinces from the Canadian Dairy Commission website:
http://www.cdc.ca/cdc/index_en.asp?caId=812&pgId=2180
Dion telling Alberta how to the manage its main export (oil) is like someone from the West telling Quebec how to manage their main export (crooked politicians).
With few exceptions, former Ontarians, British Columbians, and Quebecers here in Calgary pick up the local culture very quickly. One former Torontonian told me his neck started getting red not too long after his arrival in Alberta
Every province has moonbats. When we westerners react to Citoyen Dion’s verbal flatulence by slagging entire provinces of people we allow ourselves to be sucked into playing the Liberals dirty little game.
Not the Winnipeg free Press – The Grain Growers guide of 1915. Here’s a better copy of the orginal from the Glenbow archives in Calgary.
http://www.glenbow.org/exhibitions/online/libhtm/milch.htm
“Our artist has here attempted to portray the idea which the Big Interests of Eastern Canada seem to have of the proper function of the Western Provinces. The Bankers, the Railway Corporations and the Manufacturers rejoice to see a big crop in the West because it will increase their own profits, but when the farmers of the West ask for lower rates of interest, lower freight rates and Free Trade, so that they can get the full value of the crops they produce, Big Business, with the aid of the Party Politicians, always succeeds in having their demands refused.”
Printed in the December 15, 1915, issue of the Grain Growers Guide.
Is Scott(beer and popcorn) Reid coaching Dion on talking points?
it was me who said it b4, and I will say it again…do not get sucked into the east vs west game….it will guarantee citoyen dion a majority…it is not east vs west, but conservatives vs blood sucking leeches….
More of the same Liberano BullSh!t, Bash Alberta’s BIG BAD OIL to get the get the socialist tree hugger vote. If Dion ever becomes PM he will stop the power shift to the West just wait and see.
kingstonlad is right. Listen to what he is saying.
Also, it is not eastern as in most citizens of Ontario, ect. But it IS ‘east’ as in eastern Media. They have controlled Canadian politics since confederation. I am not sure who contols the Media orgs, but I have an idea who.
Blood sucking leaches they are indeed, the Alberta bashing by Stephanie Hissy Fit and his ilk shows just how desperate a situation the Lie-beral’s find themselves in these days and it won’t be getting any better. Wonder what their own polling is telling them? Heh.
Fortunately we have SD’s Gomery Testimony to shove in his face whenever the next election occurs along with the Lie-beral’s dark history of wrong doing, corruption and contempt for Canadians.
I’ve been working nights lately. Before I went to bed this morning I read that story at the Sun. Now it just so happens that my best friend’s father gave me a photostat of that cartoon at Christmas, so I pulled it with the intent of scanning it and sending it to Kate when I got back to my desk (which is now), only to find that Kate’s already got the cartoon posted. Excellent, saves me the trouble of hooking up the scanner.
By the way, the labels on the milk pails, which are not clear in Kate’s scan or the Glenbow copy linked to by Coop, say: “Ottawa”, “Toronto”, and “Montreal”. It was, as Coop says, originally published in the December 15, 1915, issue of the Grain Growers Guide.
Problem: the one sucking the tit is really Quebec and not Ontario.
Secondly Dion is the grand pooh bah for Quebec because Liberal PM’s don’t give a rat’s arse for the ROC.
19145 to 2007 is 92 years liberals have been raping the west. Will they have a 100 yr celebration in 2015, that will be three years after the end of Kyoto. How many of you know that the kyoto accord is over and done with in 2012, and MIGHT be reconsidered. No wonder dion is in such a hurry to be pm, he only has 5 years to get those billions for credits in liberal hands. I have never read anywhere if come 2012 if all programs re kyoto will be stopped. We just hear that targets have to be met by 2012, not that the accord ends in 2012. And all they decided at the last conference was that MAYBE they will meet again to reconsider the accord. Does it make sense to spend all that money for 5 yrs, when the technology wont even exist by then. Y2Kyoto scam, but the truth is slowly getting out of the closet, and dion, ds, layton and may are scared they will be found out.
Terence Corcoran, editor of The National Post, has called the UN/Mann ‘hockey stick graph’ a “Big Lie”.
http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/financialpost/story.html?id=68ec347c-6959-40cf-aac7-795b1a9291e8
Terence is absolutely correct. And the world knows it.
Kyoto was based on the ‘stick’. One would think/know that Kyoto is therefore a Big Lie also.
Dion is pushing Kyoto. What does that make him ??
What does that make other Media orgs that intentionaly choose to not report on the Big Lie ?? Liable ??
And The Weather Network had Suzuki on today. In a series of interviews promoting the Big Lie.
I assume you westerners would like to see Ontario come over to your side. I also assume that lots of people from Ontario read this site. This cartoon does nothing to help your cause. Ontarians are just like Albertans. We give far too much and get little back, including no money out of the equalization pot. So, maybe you should all try to do more to win over Ontarians instead of constantly alienating them. This cartoon lumps Ontarians with the east, most notably, Quebec. I resent, as an Ontarian, being equated with the welfare state of Quebec.
lj – Considering this is a cartoon that was put out generations ago – relax. As an Albertan, I am certainly aware that Ontario is a contributor – as are most of the commentors here.
In my mind, the cartoon did not say the “milk” was going to Ontario and Quebec, but rather to Ottawa – which is Kate’s point – Dion still wants all that “milk” to go to Ottawa – and he is going to take it somehow. That is what has angered those of us in Western Canada – no matter how hard we work, Liberals will take more and more of our money – yours and mine.
Dang… the Liberals have gone and elected themselves another Chretien!
How regressive of the Liebrano$$$.
The more they “change”, the more they stay the same… and get even worse…
I hope dion’s dog “kyoto” bites him on his narrow little ass. It is hard to believe that another Quebec pol is all set to gut the “easy money” oil patch. That disrespectful little prick has insulted a lot of hard working people who are very tired of “same old, same old” from a corrupt lieberal. It is amazing to me to watch and….oh the excitement the castro-toady spawn of that rat faced git PET is set to throw his “crown in the ring!!!and all the lieberals are trembling with excitement. I read his little article where he muses about being “born to greatness” Spit>>>>>
