I don’t usually do poll results, but I’ll make an exception in this case;
This latest survey shows that, nationally, 41 percent of eligible and decided Canadian voters would support the Conservative Party if an election were held today, compared with the 36 percent it earned in the January 23rd federal election. The Liberal Party, now under interim leadership, has seen its support drop to 22 percent (down 8 points), and is now in a statistical tie with the New Democratic Party, which has seen its support edge upwards to 21 percent (up 3 points). Support for the Bloc Qubcois in Quebec is stable at 44 percent (up 2 points). Relatively few (13%) voters are currently undecided about which party might deserve their support.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has earned solid public approval in his first months in office, with 60 percent of Canadians expressing approval of the job he has done to date.

Also: a good article by John Gormley in the Saskatoon SP on that very topic – and how certain elements in the media are openly flaunting their political bias by labelling nearly every initiative of our new Prime Minister as “American style”.

OTTAWA — Two turfed cabinet ministers, including Edmonton’s Anne McLellan, racked up expensive dinners at taxpayers’ expense after the Liberals lost the election.
According to a quarterly disclosure report, McLellan, the deputy PM in the Paul Martin government who was defeated in her city riding, billed taxpayers $1,265 for a dozen employees to dine at the exclusive Rideau Club in Ottawa on Feb. 2 – nearly two weeks after she was voted out of office.
Meanwhile, ex-public works minister Scott Brison claimed $1,245 for two dinners at the swanky Italian eatery Mama Theresa’s after the Jan. 23 Grit defeat.
The first was a $939 dinner for 17 employees to discuss “wrapping up” files three days after the Liberals were ousted from office.
Brison’s spokesman, Susan Murray, said the event was meant to show gratitude for hard work but also included a “small amount of business” to tie up loose ends before the Conservative cabinet was sworn in Feb. 6.
“Mr. Brison really makes no apology for the department offering a sort of small thank you for all the effort that people have made,” she said.
“Working in a minister’s office is long and hard work. Often they’re there very, very late at night – these are difficult positions. So he makes no apologies for giving a thank-you dinner for them.”
But the second expense, a $306 dinner for six on Jan. 31, was a personal gathering with MPs that should not have been billed to taxpayers, Murray said.
She said Brison wrote a reimbursement cheque to the receiver general as soon as he learned of the “administrative error” yesterday.
“It should never have been there,” she said. “Scott was really surprised and he moved quickly.” + more

The lack of movement in the undecideds really caught my eye. Was this poll based on Canadians at large or on people who actually voted in the last election?
I think its noteworthy That Conservatives have gained 13 points in GTA, and now lead the Liberals there.
Looking good.
Yes, it’s interesting to watch the MSM labeling everything that is non-socialist (i.e. Liberal/NDP) as ‘American-style’. I haven’t noticed them labeling anything socialist as ‘Soviet Union/Chinese communist style’.
ET; as in a communist style national day care system?, how about communist gun control legislation or my favourite, communist central marketing boards.
I don’t think my liver could handle Gormley’s suggestion to take a swig everytime the MSM uses the phrase “American Style”. I mean I would be plastered all the time.
Tories Up Again in Polling, Libs Write Off Quebec
…the Liberals are now effectively dead… finished, for a good long time, if not forever…
As far as Toronto goes da proof will be after the weekend when an expected illegal-immigrant mob will be protesting the CPC’s crackdown on illegals.
Tories Up Again in Polling, Libs Write Off Quebec
…the Liberals are now effectively dead… finished, for a good long time, if not forever…
Good article by Gormley. However, the media were doing this before the election as well. As Harper has learned, it doesn’t matter what he does, the media in general is leftwing. Why cater to it?
How about instead of communist, we say:
Liberals have come out to defend Canada’s “North Korean-style totalitarian health care system.”
Or Canada’s “Cuban-style foreign policy”
Or Canada’s “Hamas-style UN voting record”
Or…
While I enjoy seeing the Tories’ popularity rise, everyone needs to realize this is just a ‘halo’ effect of recent media coverage. Every time a new leader is elected, he/she enjoys a period of high press coverage which, unless he/she makes unpopular changes, results in momentarily higher popularity. When Kerry was selected in the US, he polled way higher than Bush for weeks, until the Republicans had their convention; then the race was close again.
You can expect a surge in Liberal support after their leadership race, regardless of who they choose. That blip will be as meaningless, if less pleasurable, as this one.
Harper is showing the MSM that governing a country really isn’t THAT hard. It is dealing with the politics that is the hard part.
He is governing the best he can while engaging in the least amount of politicing.
The Liberals whole focus was politics, actually governing in a responsible way came in a distant last.
Watch the dummies on the CBC try to explain every move Harper makes in the context of it being good politics or not. They just don’t get it, or they do get it and are still trying to discredit him.
I was pleasantly suprised by a rabid Liberal coworker who after the election said he hoped that Harper would be a great prime minister. His point was that while he didn’t like Harper, Canada needs good government, and therefore he hoped Harper would do a good job. Seems obvious in some ways, but not to the MSM.
Perhaps the MSM should get out of their habit of cheering for a political party the way they cheer for their favourite sports team, and get on with the job of reporting the news and cheering for a better Canada.
How about referring to some of the Liberal talking heads as “party apparatchiks”
Canada’s “Cosa Nostra-style Public Works”
The conservatives are doing what they said they would do during the election. That, above all, is what will give them a majority next election. It also doesnt hurt when they act on issues before they become a scandal. (IE, Native leaders are soon to be expected to be accountable. Also cutting funding to Hamas BEFORE any other country, except Isriel)
As long as they do what they say they’re gonna do, they’ll get my vote
It is way too soon to be talking about how Harper is doing. I think it would be more meaningful to ask the question after he has actually done a few things.
He needs to have a budget and some time to actually implement programs and present and pass legislation. It is only then we will have some idea of whether we have a short term or long term PM.

Federal Liberals lose Quebec members
Canadian Press – Apr. 7, 2006.
OTTAWAWhacked by the sponsorship scandal, the Liberal Party of Canada lost 75,000 members in two years in Quebec as the number of supporters reached its lowest level in a decade.
The Quebec wing of the federal party has 25,000 members, compared with 100,000 in 2004. The low level represents only 5 per cent of the party’s 500,000 members across the country, even though the province has 24 per cent of the Canadian population.
The situation is an urgent preoccupation for the provincial wing, especially with its debt of $1.8 million. As a result, the annual membership fee will double to $10.
The party hopes the leadership race, which officially begins today, boosts its numbers.
“The leadership race is certainly an interesting opportunity to boost the number of our members and fill our coffers,” said Robert Fragasso, president of the Quebec wing of the federal Liberal party.
The paid support for the party has rarely been so low. Over the last decade, there have been an average of between 30,000 and 35,000 members, he said.
The number peaked at 100,000 in 2004, when Paul Martin was selected leader.
The sponsorship scandal and the Gomery commission play- ed an important role in the subsequent downturn. +

Good article by John Gormley.
Today, right in downtown Vancouver, I saw a pair of “American-style” police officers.
I knew that they were “American-style” cops because they wore uniforms, carried *gasp* sidearms and drove a marked police car.
Just like in the US!
Police.
With Guns.
In our cities.
In Canada.
I’m NOT making this up.
And while we’re on the subject, on the news last week I noticed an item that our wounded soldiers in Af’stan were being transported in AMERICAN helicopters. And flown to Germany to get “American-style” hospital treatment, from AMERICAN doctors!
Geez, the press better get on this quickly before we lose even more of our sovereignty.
Stop this “American-style” journalism!
Someone mentioned that, they are suprised Justin Trudeau . Has not been conscripted into the liberal Party leadership. Well there working on it.
Justin Trudeau to help rebuild Liberals
Published: Friday, April 07, 2006
OTTAWA — A report says the federal Liberals have persuaded the eldest son of former prime minister Pierre Trudeau to help renew the party.
CanWest Global says Justin Trudeau will lead a youth task force as part of the party’s effort to rebuild after losing the January 23rd election.
Trudeau, who is 34, is an activist on several issues, including youth and the environment.
Last year, he said the Liberals could use some time in the political wilderness.
Trudeau said that was one of his father’s tricks to stay grounded, because spending time in the woods “gives you a certain amount of perspective.”
He said the Liberals missed a chance to renew themselves in late 2003 when Jean Chretien stepped down as leader and prime minister.

The PM is right on in his assesment of bilingualism as its defined in Canada:
After all, enforced national bilingualism in this country isn’t mere policy. It has attained the status of a religion. It’s a dogma which one is supposed to accept without question.
Stephen Harper
What is really ironic is that the Canadian MSM is itself “American style” cause down south the media sure loves them Dems!
Full agreement from this quarter. The MSM is rubbing itself against anything “left of centre” even ifs its BQ.
Gormley’s correct. “American Style” has come to mean “sinister, skin and eat your kitten”.
I have been watching the media and reading blogs. The Librano’s absolutely have no clue. They are still being seduced by their MSM buddies lobbing softballs for them to hit out of the park.
It has not yet dawned on them that nobody believes them anymore. Nobody is listening to the answers. If a Liberal’s mouth is moving, people are taking it on faith that they are lying. Scott Brison on TV talking about accountability. Dosanj defending our troops in Afganistan. Wayne Easter denigrating Emerson to prop up Shapiro. What is that all about? These people have no clue.
Even the dumbest citizen (e.g. me) can figure out these folks are just talking heads. Yes the MSM keeps lobbing up soft ones for these guys to hit. The public has stopped believing. The Liberal numbers will keep dropping. A leadership campaign that takes the media with it is exactly what Harper wants. He wants the cameras out of the faces of his government. He wants to govern and he has picked cabinet ministers that want to work.
I can’t see the Liberal’s getting back into contention for years, if ever. Their position is so precarious they could get snuffed out by the little rooster. The CPC is helping Layton all they can, and he will continue to drain support from their left flank, just as the Liberal’s will continue to bleed from all the bullet holes they put in themselves.
They may be “entitled to their entitlements”, but every article is another vote forever lost to them.
They have 10 guys running from Toronto. Do they have any idea how that looks?
Oh well, I wasn’t going to vote for them anyway.
Revnant Dream
I don’t think Justin Trudeau will make a bid for Lib leadership at this time. I saw an interview between him and one of the CBC talking heads. He didn’t rule out aspirations for the future but seemed pretty convincing that he had no interest this time around…too busy with PET’s Katimivik youth quest. It wasn’t for lack of trying on the interviewers part, he was practically down on hands and knees begging JT to enter the race. It was a rather disgusting display by Grorge S. I thought.
As for Justin, He has some of his dads charisma but I don’t get the sense that he is the political animal that PET was or that he has the same political saavy. Time will tell, and I won’t be surprised if the desparate back room Liberal king-maker-wanna-be’s talk Justin into running to “save Canada”. More likely he is being groomed for the next time around.

Canada’s ‘South African-style’ native policy.
Did the liberals change their name to the Toronto Party of Canada, and are having a Toronto leadership race. Not only will the libs be isolated in several provinces in Canada, they will soon be a rump party existing only in TO. To the powers that be and all back room boys,Iggy will not get votes outside of Toronto. Rae is toast in Toronto and most western provinces. It will take another 20 yrs for AB to forget the NEP and Trudeau, it will take Manitoba another 20 yrs to forget the moving of the plane repair depot and it will be generations for Que to forget ADSCAM. Where will the libs get a majority – they can’t. Proportional representation will lead to a very chaotic house of commons. Look at the fuss over Emmerson, do you really want all MPs picking sides after an election, or appointed by some panel.
The liberals get themselves kicked out of office in CANADA
