Lorne Calvert’s Old Boys Parliament

The Saskatchewan Youth Parliament has a colourful history;

[I]it wasn’t until 1945 that Youth Parliament in Saskatchewan began to consistently meet again. At this time, the Older Boys Parliament began its evolution towards what we now call SYP. There were many spirited debates on whether to admit females, non-Christians and smokers. The members at the time decided to allow smokers to join but not females or non-Christians. In 1959, there was a resolution debated on permitting females to join the organisation. At the time, current Saskatchewan premier Lorne Calvert was a member and gave a passionate speech against admitting females, while his then girlfriend watched from the gallery. Apparently, they broke up soon afterwards. [emphasis mine]

You don’t say!

  1. Several years back I attended SYP as a delegate. It was a debauchery-fest unparalleled in my experience at that tender young age. It may, however, be an accurate introduction to political life ….

  2. Lorne Calvert hated women ??
    Tommy Douglas embraced eugenics ??
Tow things you will never learn from CBC

  3. It was the 50’s. Times were a lot different. Sask.was a mostly farming province. A lot has changed since then. Although I think a lot of Tories still harbor these beliefs. That old time religion and all that.

  4. Let’s go back further to the 1920’s when the then Conseratives supported the KKK. That’s a historical fact.

  5. ok4ua, post your source for your “historical fact”.
And while you’re at it let’s go back to 2005/2006 when the Liberals supported the Tamal Tigers. How about the current NDP and Hammas.

  7. They burned crosses in Indian Head. Ask some of your Ukrainian friends. My Dad told me about them. He was Ukrainian. They were against Catholics,Indians and Slavic peoples. They were Conservative supporters. Go look it up in the Archives. It’s there.

  8. And then, of course, there were the Aztecs, who were LPC supporters, who sacrificed women atop stone slabs…

  9. Thanks ok4ua. I take you don’t have a link to back up your “historical facts”. Also, saying that “Conservative supporters” were against certain people is not the same as saying the “Conservatives” were. This kind of drive by smearing is uncalled for.

  10. A few more facts for ok4ua
Daniel C. Grant. Openly admitted member of the KKK. Close political ally of Tommy C. Douglas. Daniel was Tommy’s first campaign manager. Look it up.
Every political party at the time had some connection to the Klan, including Premier Anderson and the Progressive Conservative Party . the KKK was huge in Saskatchewan at the time. It was mainly run by the local Baptist or Methodist ministers. People were expected to be at the Klan rally on Saturday night and church on Sunday morning.
T.C. Douglas’ M.A. thesis on eugenics fits in perfectly with the KKK ideology.
My father’s family, being french speaking catholics, were among the most hated by the KKK. My father hates the CCFer’s with a passion, you see some of them would spit on him when he was a child. His only crime was speaking speaking french.
My mother’s father, a good protestant Scottish highlander, often talked about the Klan in Saskatchewan in the 1920’s and 1930’s. He was never a member, but he spoke of people being hung outside of their burning homes. I have no evidence of this, but it does amaze me that there is so little written about this part of Saskatchewan history. Of course, it was Mr. Douglas who started the Saskatchewan Archives…

Fugitive U.S. polygamist urges followers to flee to Saskatchewan
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Pressure is being put on law-enforcement officers in the twin polygamist communities of Colorado City, Ariz., and Hildale, Utah, to co-operate in an investigation into possible theft of assets from their sect’s trust fund.
And in another development, a court-appointed fiduciary who manages the fund said the sect’s fugitive leader was reported to be urging certain followers to move to Saskatchewan. +

Is that your best answer? I give you all kinds of information to look up and all you can do is reiterate your socialist propaganda? You are clearly a left wing nut.
I now know how men like Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini were able to do the damage they did; they had millions of loyal Socialist followers like yourself who never question what they were told no matter how much evidence was put forth. I am so glad the Canadian people keep the nut jobs and fruit cakes like yourself to only a few seats in the parliment. I just wish we could get the rest of you Nazi’s out of Saskatchewan. we will though, and we won’t have to resort to violence the way the Socialist governments around the world have.

“Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel or envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.”
    Sir Winston Churchill

  13. The Rev. L. Calvert is an apostate christian minister. Calvert, tired of waiting for the heavenly Paradise offered by christianity in the hereafter, abandoned christ.
Calvert is now shilling for the church of
socialism which offers hell on earth.

On January 1st, 2005 provincial leaders including The Honourable Lynda Haverstock, Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, The Honourable Lorne Calvert, Premier of Saskatchewan, along with the Saskatchewan Centennial Chair, Glen Hagel, announced Theresa Sokyrka as the Saskatchewan Centennial 2005 Youth Ambassador.

Premier Lorne Calvert attended the final show of “Canadian Idol” in Toronto and made the following quote:, “Theresa, You have won the hearts of a city, a province and a nation!”. … +

I wouldn’t say 12 balanced budgets in a row in Saskatchewan under the NDP is hell on earth.
If you want hell on earth you should have been in Ontario when Conservative Mike Harris was destroying the provinces schools, health care and basically everything he touched. He left us with the province in ruins and 6 billion in debt. Just Putrid.

  15. Apparently, you’ve included the ones they “balanced” by borrowing money.
And then people were gasp! surprised that they misled the public on the financing of Spudco.

  16. Playing the game of who was more evil in the past is a game for putz’s!
Everybody was, if you start looking for skeletons.
We need to look to the future. NDP is a party of dogma, not reason.
Liberals are a party of “pass out the koolaid, get us elected again, I’m starting to hyperventilate, oh my God, oh my God!”
They need some time in the wilderness just like the PC’s, Reformers, and Alliance members. Librano’s are still cheek by jowl with the Capo’s of the Big Jean, and Big Paulie families. They need time to clean house and re-create themselves. They should pick someone young.

  17. steve d,
I spent sometime in Ontario in the early 90’s. remember Bob Rae? No one has ever done as much damage to a provincial economy as that man. He ran huge deficits. Sure, he is a nice guy and very charming, quick witted even, but a governing disaster! If the Saskatchewan NDP can blame everything in the last 20 years on Grant Devine, don’t you think that Mike Harris could blame his 8 years on Bob Rae?
By the way, Lorne Calvert may have done some creative book keeping, our Auditor General is very pissed about it, but no matter how you boil it down he has increased our provincial debt substantially. Look it up.

  18. Trent:…and don’t forget…Boob Rae is possibly in a run-off for the ‘liebrills’ leadership race with ‘egghead’…must make them feel really on-top-of-it!!…(on-top-of-what?…you fill in the blank…

  19. Funny how nobody in this discussion posted any basic google results about the KKK in Saskatchewan. I accessed this site and although I did not have time to research this site thoroughly it did offer up some interesting comments. I thought I would mention it to add to the discussion.
    http://www.world-spectator.com/archives.25.html
With regard to Calvert and his 1959 comments I would like to say that people can and do change over time as they grow and mature. I know that I am not the same person as I was in 1959, but maybe I am different that way.

  20. J.B.
I have never found that webstie before, it is very interesting. Thanks. I always thought there was some real evidence connecting the KKK to the Conservatives at the time, but apparently not, just accusations from Gardiner. The site doesn’t mention the CCF at all, not even the well known connection between Tommy Douglas and Daniel C. Grant. Douglas was criticised for choosing a Klans member for a campaign manager, but still keep him on. Look it up in the book “The Life and Political Times of Tommy Douglas” by Walter Stewart. Mr. Stewart pretty clears loves Mr. Douglas and Socialism in this book, so I am sure you will enjoy it. Mr. Stewart defends alot of the criticisms of Tommy Douglas. Keep in mind that at the time Tommy was a very spirited young baptist minister who had a plan to breed the master imperial race.He wrote his thesis about just that. He often talked publicly about morality and decency.
If Tommy were to enter politics today, do you really think this man would join in the fight for partial birth abortion, legalizing pot, gay marriage (and I do support gay rights) or any of the other left-wing ideas of today? Be honest.

  21. while we are on to KKK. google Hedy Fry and Burning Crosses.
you get Prince George , an over active imagination —and a potential liberal leader as the second choice.

  22. don’t knock satellite radio until you have heard Tammy Bruce. I agree with almost everything she says. She was a former U.S. Liberal and now has moved more to the center-right.
You can also get G. Gordon Liddy, Laura Ingraham, NRA radio, etc and a bunch of wacked out left-wingers! The left wingers are hilarious!
I got Sirius radio a year before Howard ever announced that he was going there and I have to say it is great!

  23. J. B.:…thanks, as well, for pointing out the site…the KKK were anywhere that fear could be turned into hate…hate is still going strong today, although, in some cases known by a different acronym. And, without direct relativity to Calvert and his 1959 comments…I agree with your last statement…”people change…”. If we don’t we lose. The only thing hate generates is more hate. That is not to say I don’t know how feelings of hate can start to generate themselves. It’s our morality that keeps these feelings in check and prevents them from destroying ourselves.
Trent:… re your question…”How would Tommy….?”…since we are all products of our environment (amongst other things) it would be difficult to know what Tommy’s thoughts would be…conject as we might it would be a tough call. The current issues you mention weren’t on the radar then and the Tommy we knew wouldn’t be the Tommy we would see in current times.

  24. JB: In regards to your comment:
“With regard to Calvert and his 1959 comments I would like to say that people can and do change over time as they grow and mature. I know that I am not the same person as I was in 1959, but maybe I am different that way.”
I would state that is right. another NDP changed too and is not same (sane) person they once were is……….Svend Robinson who was married to women in 1972 too.
But then again…….with the NDP and Calvert. Accepting a gay over a women was probably preferred. That explains why they are all a bunch of flamers

  25. The relentless attemps by left-wingers to brand anyone who dares to disagree with their views as aracist – democracy as long as you tow the socialist party line – just insures that they will never gain national. Keep it up!

  26. This has now been picked up by the MSM, although Calvert amends the date to 1969:
A slightly sheepish premier was confronted Friday by reporters citing a web page on the Saskatchewan Youth Parliament’s history that mentions a young Calvert giving “a passionate speech against admitting females, while his then-girlfriend watched from the gallery. Apparently they broke up soon afterwards.”

  27. Calvert’s comments really shouldn’t come as a surprise. Hypocrisy is hardly an unknown to the NDP.

  28. Trent
No I am afraid ol’ Mike Harris made his mess all by himself. Don’t forget he slashed billions from education, health care, welfare while shrinking the government emloyee payrolls.
Froze wages for six years. All this while enjoying a booming economie. The recession ended by 1994, too late for Rae, but just in time for Harris to benefit handsomely with taxes flowing back in. On top of all this “saving” he sold off some government assets, a newly built highway. Is now a privately owned toll road, sold part of provinces hydro power supplies etc
The nutty thing is that after all this cutting and selling off when his government was finally kicked out he left a huge 6billion debt??? Now I ask you how is that possible???
I did look up Saskatchewans debt. Yes they do have debt. However, it is not crazy Mike Harris debt. The 04-05 debt was $284 million. This put Saskatchewan 4th in the country behind Alberta (PC) , B.C.(LIB), and Manitoba(NDP). Out of 10 provinces the 3rd and 4th best at debt management are NDP run governments.

  29. steve d.:…as described in the 1st two paragraphs of your last post, you are correct…harris left this province in a mess. There were certainly others factors involved but he merely reversed responsibilities ie. transfered the costs of education and welfare to the municipal tax rolls. He also took provincial highways and reduced them to municipal roads, in order to have the local taxes pay those costs as well. I’ve forgotten what was taken off the municipal rolls but the end result was not good overall. harris basically got in on a ‘get rid of the ndp (boob rae) vote’ and the end result was not pretty. I don’t have all the facts (from memory) here…someone could add particulars if they wish.

  30. Garry P.
Harris cut taxes then cut almost 5 billion from health care and education(lowest funding in Canada & 48th in North America. He cut welfare 22%, he downloaded provincial responsibilities on to the cities, he cut public housing, and the civil service. He privatized some government services like licencing, and water purification(he was found culpable in the death of 7 and the sickness of 2300 people in Walkerton), and sold off a public highway(it is now a toll road). In the end the Tories were polling Bush numbers, 33% and were defeated leaving the above mess and 6 billion in debt.
Some of the results health care cuts; 10 000 nurses lost, ambulance drivers had difficulty finding ER’s to drop their patients.
In education the dropout rate ballooned to 25%.
We will never forget Mike Harris.
