I spent an hour and a half with a Muslim friend of mine Saturday. You have to switch to a middle east frame of reference, he under stands both western and middle east thought. His thoughts. Posting the cartoons and declaring our ability to have free speach is not the same argument in the middle east. In the east under “normal” values there is a code of respect for “GOD” “elders” and “family” Making fun of a peaceful prophet is disrespectful, Mohamid, Jesus Christ, Others. He really wondered why Christains didn’t defend making fun of Christ more. He says that disrespecting his grandparents would be an unforgivable sin against allah, let alone one disrespecting a prophet. He was taught from as far back as he can remember respect for LIFE. He told me that he was taught if he was dying and had a seed in his hand he MUST use every last ounce of energy to plant the seed to carry on life. He says that one of the hardest parts of living the western life is maintaining his childrens respect for elders when his kids see and hear all around them the disrepect other kids have for theirs. He felt that the cartoons are throwing gas on fire with a group of idiots who claim the koran and allah as their excuse for their views, in much the same way the nazi’s used the bible and god to twist their views. He felt we are buying new memberships/recruits for alqieda radicals with every posting. Doing “wrong” to highlight a wrong is not an answer. He also felt we were endangering every Canadian over seas including his own family when he travels back, and OUR soldiers helping to bring democracy and security.
He felt the argument may be “right” in North America but it sure is “more wrong in Islamic countries.
I didn’t argue with him I used the two ears/ one mouth principle and let his share his views.

Regarding Ted Kennedy, many years ago when I was at university, an American friend of mine had a fascinating poster in his room: a full-length Volkswagen Beetle ad printed in black and white – or it looked like one.
It had a picture of a Beetle floating on the surface of a large body of water. Along the bottom, next to the familiar VW logo and in that Arial font VW seems to have used since forever, was the following text line:
“If Ted Kennedy had driven a Volkswagen, Mary Jo would be alive today.”

A decision to expel CAW president Buzz Hargrove from the NDP has created a furor within the party and raised the ire of the powerful union.
Windsor NDP MPs Joe Comartin and Brian Masse say they want to reverse a decision by the Ontario executive of the NDP to kick the country’s most prominent labour leader out of the party over his endorsement of strategic voting and backing of some Liberal candidates in the recent federal election.
The decision made Saturday means Hargrove is out of the federal party, as well — a move leader Jack Layton doesn’t agree with, say Comartin and Masse. Layton couldn’t be reached for comment Sunday.
Hargrove said the news came as a complete surprise.
“I don’t think Jack Layton knew about this or was part of it. I’m convinced of that because it’s completely contradictory to the message he left me on my cellphone, and that was Friday afternoon,” Hargrove said Sunday.
In his message, Layton “actually complimented the CAW and our role during the election and said there was some differences of opinion and we’d have to iron those out,” Hargrove said.
He’ll see Layton today at a meeting of the Canadian Labour Congress in Ottawa, but isn’t sure what he’ll say, Hargrove said.
The Ontario NDP executive has “declared war on the CAW” and the consequences could be devastating, said Gary Parent, executive treasurer for CAW Local 444 and head of the Windsor and District Labour Council. >>>

It’s ludicrous to charge the Western Standard with a “hate crime”. That would be singling out a non-Muslim entity whereas all Muslim entities get away with all kinds of speech that could easily be deemed by a Tribunal or Commission as “hate”.
I’d back off if I was Elmasry. He’s just going to open a new can of worms for his own guys to have to answer for. All the speech from his guys will come under scrutiny and be held up for view and compared to any “cartoons” a news organization may publish in line with freedom of expression and freedom of the press.

Giving the Boot to Buzz
The NDP released their TV ads today, and one involves a Christmas present falling from the sky (corporate tax cuts for Liberal friends), a piece of coal (for the rest of us), and a boot (presumably for the Liberal Party). So when NDP leader Jack Layton landed in Windsor after CAW President Buzz Hargrove gushed about Paul Martin for the second time in a week, one reporter asked him if he wanted to “give the boot to Buzz too?”
Layton tried to run away from the question all day, not wanting to be dragged into an insult match with the union leader. Hargrove may be a card-carrying member of the NDP, but he certainly isn’t doing any favours for his party.
It must be something about Fridays, because last Friday Hargrove gave Paul Martin a union jacket and told members to vote for the NDP in ridings where they are leading, and vote for the Liberals everywhere else.
“It’s not creating confusion,” Layton insisted.”If you vote NDP you’ll get an NDP MP.” Hmmmm.
Then this Friday, Hargove did it again. Appearing at an event with Martin at the Daimler-Chrysler plant in Windsor, Hargrove said, “We have two NDP members in town and I’ve been instructed in advance not to hug you (Martin), even though I feel like hugging you.” >>

I must comment on Mike’s posting anbout his “moderate” Muslim friend. It is indeed perfectly legitimate for a Muslim to refuse to print, publish or otherwise refer to an image of their religious figures. He just can’t forbid me to do it IN MY OWN COUNTRY. The Danes published IN DENMARK not Iran or Saudi Arabia or any middle eastern country. Yet the “moderate” Muslims chose to either enjoy an outpouring of violence or support it as a reasonable response. Few if any so called moderate Muslims have condemmed the violence let alone speaak publicly against it. We must ask ourselves why. If there is one thing that is crystal clear and they should understand, it is that THEIR LAWS DO NOT APPLY TO ME. I DO NOT NECESSARILY AGREE WITH THE SENTIMENTS EXPRESSED IN CARTOONS OF ANY ILK BUT I WILL GO TO THE WALL TO PROTECT OUR RIGHT TO EXPRESS THEM. There is no SHARIA law here and there never will be. In a telephone conversation with party executives on Jan. 26, Mr. Martin declared that he intended to resign “soon,” and that he would consult them about the appointment of an interim leader. Party members breathed a huge sigh of relief.
Then the unexpected happened. After conversations with close supporters, including at least one Liberal senator, Mr. Martin changed his mind. The Liberal leader emerged from a caucus meeting on Feb. 1 with the news that former cabinet minister Bill Graham would replace him as parliamentary leader but that he would remain as party leader until his replacement was selected. The executives were miffed…
What happens if the government is defeated before Mr. Martin is replaced?… Party organizers can only hold their breath, because they do not want Mr. Martin to lead them into another election…
[T]o block an emergency comeback by Mr. Martin with the same tired crew of counsellors, executives are examining ways to select delegates well before the convention. That way, the executives could rapidly organize an electronic leadership vote by those delegates, ensuring the party would have a new leader even if the government fell unexpectedly over the next few months. It’s that bad.

February 13, 2006 – President of the Young Liberals of Canada (B.C.), Coco Lefoka, has been hitting the airwaves hard, speaking of his great disappointment for the “unprincipled and undemocratic decision” made by David Emerson. Emerson’s scruples (or lack thereof) aside, however, Mr. Lefoka is not exactly the best person to be speaking about the merits of democracy.
Take a read of these excerpts from an email that was received from a Liberal member who for reasons of safe-keeping, shall remain nameless:
“The Liberal Party of Canada has no respect for democracy. How can THE EXECUTIVE/POWER THAT BE, even begin to cry foul when they run their own party as if they were given some divine right?
I recall a Young Liberal Provincial AGM that took place last spring at UBC. Yes, a provincial AGM, only at UBC. Now ask yourself, how does a youth, on a student budget, with a limited means of transportation, with classes in the afternoon, located in either Victoria, Prince George, even Surrey for that matter, make it to a 2 hour AGM in the afternoon at UBC? Doesn’t democracy involve the greatest number of people having their voices heard?
Not according to Coco Lefoka. Here is a guy who cancelled ballot boxes at both UVIC and SFU to ensure that his Fraternity brothers at Kappa Sigma would be in closest proximity to the voting location for the provincial youth AGM, after the Young Liberal executive had voted to give youth across the province a voice. Don’t let me forget the free Beer that these young “principled” men were enticed with.
How does one forgive the senior Liberal pundits in the party for their unwillingness to commit to a fair and democratic process within the party? You have Jamie Elmhirst, president of the Liberal Party of Canada in B.C., and Kim Haakstad, Executive Director, who both obviously have a lot of time to aid Mr.Lefoka in his understanding of Democracy. How do these two justify their interference in the Youth wing of the party? Easy – this is how they can find another “principled” person like Mr. Lefoka to lead around when they need votes to assist them in their biased operation of the LPCBC and YLCBC.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. This kind of crap has dominated Liberal party politics, particularly here in B.C., for the better part of the last decade. This is the kind of rot that we need to flush from this party. >>

The Canadian media has virtually no overseas presence, especially compared with the British media. Through its highly respected World Service, the BBC, for example, faithfully transmits all of Prime Minister Tony Blair’s pronouncements on foreign affairs, even if Britain plays a marginal role in most of the international crises that flare up.
Another major reason why Canada’s voice internationally is almost inaudible is because it has starved its military for so long that whenever push comes to shove, it needs others to get there and stay safe.
The U.S. Air Force and Russian and Ukrainian charter airlines are forever moving Canada’s kit. For the mission in Kabul and the new one in Kandahar, local air transport and air cover has been or will be provided by German, Dutch, Turkish, American and British helicopters and fighter jets.
A third reason that Canada has little clout internationally is that it has had few distinguished and knowledgeable foreign ministers. What most of Canada’s top envoys have had in common when they have travelled to hot spots were the same pained expressions of compassion on their faces. And these ministers have travelled a lot, sometimes with overblown entourages, and almost always in considerable luxury.
Only two of Canada’s recent plenipotentiaries [the last thing in fact they were, given our now presidential prime ministers] managed to establish international reputations. Lloyd Axworthy was regarded as a joke or an enemy by our closest allies because of his silly ideas about soft power and his congenital antipathy for the United States. Bill Graham was beginning to impress before Paul Martin yanked him aside so that Pierre Pettigrew, an overgroomed lightweight, could commute to his home in Paris…’

Random thoughts- Those Iraqi kids were throwing rocks at the soldiers. Now, Bill G. safety sugggestion #171 recommends that you don’t throw rocks at guys with guns. It’s basically an addendum to the ol’ knife to a gunfight rule. Those kids and their momma’s should be praising Allah that they just got their asses whupped instead of perforated. sadly, those kids won’t figure that out until they’re about 30.
Took a drive around to my customers’ Friday and today. Lots of Sask. plates in every employee parking lot. There are some pretty nice houses in Red Deer where both cars in the driveway have those plates. They keep ’em until they absolutely have to switch. Hell, Sask. plates are almost like dandelions in this town. But, to the point, the politicians don’t seem to grasp what is the big motivator here-cash. We constantly see our leaders patting themselves on the back over a tax break that will net us $40 or $50 a month, apparently forgetting the fact that you’ll have to pay an accountant $300 just to make sure you qualify, and then downplaying the $60 and $70 per month in special fees and levies that they tack on elsewhere. CAG finds lapses in deal with SNC Lavalin
The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India has found that the expenditure incurred on the renovation of the Pallivasal, Sengulam and Panniar hydroelectric projects, with the involvement of the Canadian firm SNC Lavalin and spending Rs.374.50 crores, had not yielded commensurate gains…
…Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) had undertaken renovation and modernisation of the three projects without conducting any feasibility study…
…The KSEB signed an MoU with Lavalin in August 1995. Under the provisions of the MoU, the funds for the renovation were to be arranged by SNC Lavalin from the Export Development Corporation (EDC), Canada, and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)….

In light of the recent developments it appears to me Cheney was either totally wasted, criminally neglegent or attempted murder. The official story is totally concocted. As an upland hunter and 28 ga. scattergun user of many tears, I can attest to the fact the damage done the shooting victim was definately NOT from a 30 yard shot by “mistake”…at that range I have removed stray pellets that hit the dogs by pinching the skin to pop the 71/2 led pellet out…..for a 28ga. 1 oz load of 71/2 pellets to penetrate a mans ribs, grissel and muscle to loge a pellet in the heart, and leave a shot pattern about a foot in diameter the muzzel of that gun had to be closer than 20 feet from the victim.
As ususal the Fed agencies create another magic bullet theory where the scientifically predictable characteristics of projectile ballistics documented in this realm of existance do not apply.
Why lie this badly?
