It Must Be Friday

Updated – (and Im moving this item back up to the top)
Another day, another scandal. And all coming at such a inopportune time.
Do you get the sense that someone has been quietly waiting to see the “whites of their eyes”?

The RCMP has been asked to probe a Liberal consultant over a $380,000 contract she was awarded to lobby Ottawa for funds for the ailing firearms registry.
The five-month contract was awarded by the justice department to Kim Doran in March 2003 to lobby the federal solicitor general, Treasury Board and Privy Council, according to a detailed lobbyist report.
At the time, Doran was representing the Coalition for Gun Control. The group, which receives both government and private funding, claims to represent anti- gun groups and municipalities. It is a strong supporter of the gun registry.

Doran is listed as the deputy national director (Organization and Policy) of the Liberal Party of Canada.
Update – The pundits react.
Bourque summarizes it nicely: $380,000 –> CGC –> Kim Doran –> Capital Hill Group –> Liberal Party coffers ($136,000 in donations since 1993

  1. The concept of one government department hiring lobbyists to try to influence other departments must be:
    a) the ultimate proof that the Liberals have destroyed any effectiveness in the public service; or
    b) that the Liberals are corrupt and like handing money to their friends however absurd the reason.

  2. h/t to my Mom.
Inopportune time: The MSM keep saying these investigations are bad timing. Bad timing for who? They don’t say bad timing for the liberals – just bad timing. She says it is great timing for Canadians…. they can see the truth before they vote.

  3. Typical Lie-beral bull, how can Kim Doran or anyone with a shred of intelligence, claim that this isn’t a conflict of interest?

  4. According to Angry, Kim Doran’s consulting firm contributed big time to the Liberal Party. If this is true and no value was received by taxpayers for this payment, this is ADSCAM, part 2. We desperately need a regime change to get to the bottom of the corruption and kickback culture that permeates federal Liberal politics.

  5. Wait a second… I’m not sure I’m getting all this, so could somebody correct me if I’m off base.
The Liberals gave money to one of their own consultants to go out and lobby the government to add money to one of the Liberal’s own programs? That sounds like the Liberals were trying to falsify the level of support for a pet project of theirs just so that they could say there was public support and thus justify its continuence.
    Am I getting that right?

  6. Just what is going on here? Is there REALLY no end to this? Just when the electorate’s eyes are popping like ‘organ stops’over the most recent Liberal Party of Canada revelation….here comes another!
Yesterday, the MSM reported that Martin announced funding specifically targeted to mental health programmes. Do you think that was intended to benefit him…..or the rest of us!?

  7. More allegations of Liberal fraud or incompetence?
Remember none of this has been proven in a court of law.
I’ll believe it when I hear it from Peter Mansbridge.
I can’t comment further as the matter is under police investigation.

  8. $155,180 Million Reasons to Vote Liberal!
Kate, you need to have an odometer type of rolling numbers on this site counting the money the Libranos have stolen.
    LOOOOOL!

  9. Martin has stated it is the Opposition(read CPC) making these allegations–funny–it is Tom Godfrey in the Toronto Sun that reported this first. I wonder if the Civil Servants are finally unafraid to come forward–do they smell a change of government and feel safer bringing these things into the light of day?
With an honest and open Whistleblower law these things could not go on forever like they do now. Think of how much money could have been saved if honest people could report the slimy practices of, at this point, the Liberal government.

  10. I see to recall one of the blogs (SDA or Western Standard) running a piece a while back with Scott Brison speaking at a press conference referring to a “number of investigations” that are currently underway – The accokpanying photo showed Paul Martin giving Scott the evil eye basically saying “Shut up about that!” – jog anyone’s memory?

  11. Okay, this now makes torpedo number three.
Yesterday, PM Paul Martin suggested the Options Canada stuff was 10 years old. To Gilles Duceppe on CPAC it was all pretty fresh in his mind. Dauphine apparently has some close Paul Martin connections.
This new “nuclear fireball” (kudos to Shaken) is dated 2003.
I wonder if this blood is fresh enough, for the forensic scientists. This is unbelievable, call in “CSI: Crime Scene Investigators”. They will need to look at every department across the board.
I guess torpedo number 4, can’t be far off.
Liberal election ship, crippled badly, taking water fast. Life boats are about to be manned.
Watch for the last salvos from the guns, before she goes under. So keep your helmets on.

  12. Hans,
And I can just see Belinda swimming around after jumping shilooking for “the biggest log” to grab ahold of.

  13. Ok,, this is crazy,,I cant believe this one. Dont they have caucas meeting and cabinet meeting to go over stuff like this. If this country elects even one Liberal MP on the 23rd we deserve everything we get. A member of the Lib exec, getting a grant from one ministry to lobby another ministry, I want to see the accounting on this down to the last penny. They are not even trying to hide their arrogance anymore. Totally Disgusted

  14. Heading out for some beer and popcorn so I have something to enjoy while watching tomorrows scandal release…for joy for joy!

  15. You just got part of it right(surecure). The part that makes me vomit is that likely the main purpose of it all was to pay $380,000.oo to one of their contributers for nothing other than “fraternizing” and possibly a “verbal” report.

  16. This kind of blatant manipulation and theft of taxpayer dollars would never happen in a place like Hans Island, where the rule is law and law rules.

  17. Anyone here notice how an investigation by the RCMP never has a conclusion to it???
Currently there are 33 different supposed investigations underway involving the Liberal Party.
What happened to the 19 separate investigations into Shawinigate?
What happened to last spring’s investigation into the Reid/Dosage blatant bribery of Grewal affair?
It’s become obvious that the RCMP is securely in the back pocket of the Liberal Party of Canada, and high time an independent investigation agency be created so that we make the appropriate convictions, and throw these politicians, bureaucrats, and other related white collar criminals behind bars where they belong for a long, long, time.

  18. hey doug: do you think belinda is now eyeing a new job. Official leader of the opposition?

  19. While it is likely impossible to accurately track money misappropriated and lost by this government (though I would like someone to try), we can track the number of police investigations involving them. Is is not 35 now with the two latest additions?

  20. I am incredulous. Whenever stuff like this happens, and it’s all the bloody time, it’s also learned of the players’ ties to one another, and they’re all Liberal and Liberal cronies. I’ve covered scandals on TCS, describing the many ties that just add up to a huge pile of steaming crap…
I see a pattern… extreme corruption, waste of tax dollars, cronyism galore, seemingly in everything the Liberals do… it’s as if they’re all about using tax dollars for personal enrichment and luxurious enjoyment… such is the culture of entitlement…
A leak a day about corruption inside the Liberal government… it suggests that most likely the Liberal Party has discontents hellbent on destroying the Party because of its leader’s treatment of all who refused to kiss his royal ass…
To sum it up: the Liberal Party is about the exploitation of Canada and Canadians for the enrichment of loyal Liberals…
They could care less about Canada and Canadians.
We don’t need them. Never did.

  21. i guess this is number 35 the redcoats are chasing. if this keeps up the RCMP will run out of mounties.

  22. spike: you realize of course that the mounties are understaffed; they haven’t seen an increase proportional to population growth in 15 years.
(This from a source who is in my community)
For example another officer who is my aqaintance was assigned to the Picton case in which some 20 prostitutes are looking at the wrong side of the lawn. The officer’s section is supposed to have staff of 7 yet are filled with 3.
Then we expect the mounties to “hold the line”.
I’m sure they would like to hold the line, but when leadership institutes what amounts to decimation, how is that going to happen?
I have a pretty good idea where I will be placing my ballot and you can be assured the party does not have an “L” in it.

  23. Funny how a speech of Harper’s 10 years ago proves he’s evil, while another scandal, also 10 years old, is to be dismissed because Martin is now in charge and things are pristine under his management. As posted elsewhere, Elections Canada is now looking into Options file.

  24. More connections between Capital Hill and the federal Liberals and the Coalition for Gun Control?
    http://www.capitalhill.ca/eng/default.asp?id=23
Mark Quinn was at one time a Special Assistant to the Deputy Prime Minister.
Mr. Quinn is another lobbyist with the Capitol Hill Group.
Mr. Quinn is also the registered lobbyist for EDS Canada. This is the same outfit which landed all those large computer contracts from the Canada Firearms Centre.
    http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/app/ec/lrrs/registrationSummary.do;jsessionid=000
    0sZ2fyCyExg2BpUJIpCQ5MEu:vdd1k0er?browse=1&language=eng&regId=9161
Make of this what you will. However given the links between Ms Doran and the Coalition for Gun Control it might worthwhile to list off who has been getting all the Canada Firearms Centre contracts and look at their lobby connections to the Liberals.

  25. Ironlady, Martin WAS in charge 10 years ago as Finance Minister. For heavens sake, if the Finance Minister is not ultimately responsible for and in charge of financial controls within the federal government, who is?

  26. Those pundits in the picture Kate provided via the link just above actually look much more intelligent than the pundits we’ve seen being interviewed by the likes of Don Newman and Craig Oliver… they’ll tell it like they REALLY see it.
However, they don’t seem to like what they’re hearing at that precise moment… hell, look at the little guy with his hands on his face… how dare Paulie scare the little people like that?

  27. WarHammer,
Why do you think Harper wants an independant Prosecutor in place. Exactly for the purpose of putting some of these criminals behind bars. We need to see a few perp walks in this country to get some confidence backin the Federal Government.

  28. This habit of conservatives assuming something is wrong just because it appears to be wrong is getting very tiresome. The Canadian public is not going to put up with this. These unwarranted allegations imply wrongdoing on the part of the people we Canadians trust and are inconsistent with the Liberal values which have made Canada great and being a Liberal the envy of the world. Shame on you.
I am sure Ms. Doran didn’t get this contract just because she’s a Liberal. I’m sure she worked very hard for the money and the taxpayers got real value for their money. The Justice Department would no more grant this kind of fishy contract than libel a former (Conservative) Prime Minister- or the entire department needs a house cleaning. How ridiculous can you get.
Clearly conservatives don’t understand Liberal values (or the value of being a Liberal.)
None of these allegations have been proven in a court of law. They’re just allegations. The CBC wont’ even touch … .

  29. Terry,
Over the past twelve years, we have seen the Liberals grow increasingly tired.
We have seen them grow increasing arrogant.
Where there is smoke there may not be fire, but when a forest fire starts roaring and racing, it sounds like a freight train.
Those more experienced than you have learned how to recognise the signs and sounds.
    Tired.

  30. Is someone(s) telling the RCMP to halt, cease, & desist? Why? >>>
RCMP says standard procedure followed in public handling of leak probe
OTTAWA (CP) – The Mounties insist there’s nothing untoward about the very public nature of their mid-campaign investigation of the income-trust issue. >>>

  31. Synco,
My aim was of course to humour my fellow travellers and sound so much like a lame brained Liberal that some might be on the verge of taking me seriously before realizing I was putting them on.
I think that subtle sarcasm is a satisying way of dealing with people who are beyond contempt.

  32. ” Clearly Conservatives don’t understand Liberal values (or the value of being Liberal)”
Priceless!!! I suppose someone could do the math and come up with a figure. I would guess the mean value of being Liberal at say……….$45,000.00/month.

  33. “THE RACE TO THE BOTTOM” – a perfect description of Paul’s current problems, taken from cbc ‘anchors away’ (CSL) broadcast 2003:
Professor Elizabeth DeSombre studies the effect of flags of convenience.
Ultimately it is, unfortunately in this world, a trade-off between the amount of money youre going to make and the level of standards youre going to accept, says professor Elizabeth DeSombre. She studies the effect of flags of convenience at Wellesley College near Boston.
DISCLOSURE: Paul Martin would say I have no choice but to play by these rules. I mean, everyone else is doing it.
DeSOMBRE: To some extent hes right that he has no choice but to avoid playing by the rules is a better way to put it. I mean, this whole process has driven maritime industry out of the advanced industrialized democracies because they cant afford it.
DISCLOSURE: Its what some people call the race to the bottom?
    DeSOMBRE: Absolutely.
    May he rest in peace!

  34. Does anybody think the Libs knew this was coming, and that’s why they were trying to hold off until post-Gomery II? It would have bought them time to either bury it, or distract voters with more goodies. The Libs look like a party of jaded swingers who have just come off a 12-year bender.

  35. Hey !!!!!
That’s a picture of Craig Oliver’s clone at junior sycophant, er, uh interview school.
He can’t blink either, poor gaffer!

  36. Nah, Mark, it won’t be a Liberal minority. A few days before the election Ralph Klein or some Conservative backbench MP will say something (or be quoted out of context to appear) scary or stupid. Then, spooked Ontario voters (who apparently scare easily) will stampede back to the Liberal party. With the Ontario sweep, the Liberals will form a majority government.

  37. Ed,
Lieberal Majority? Puleeeeeze. I’ve established sarcasm squatting rights on this site. Please show some respect to those of us lining your pockets and don’t do this again without my approval.

  38. Terry, I’m being totally serious. The Liberals are not polling down in single digits alongside the Communist party, but are instead leading polls in Ontario and within the margin of error of the lead nationwide. This suggests to me that Canadians in general (and Ontarians in particular) are fundamentally dishonest and will reward the Liberals with a majority.

  39. Come on Ed. This internecine warfare isn’t doing either of us any good. I’ve posted a dozen sarcastic blogs here there and everywhere today in order to get my point across and you have to try to top me. If this keeps up I’ll change my name to Rodney.
Canadians will no more re-elect this incompetent Liberal bunch than they would ignorantly show that they don’t appreciate how blessed we are to have a neighbour like the United States.
But if they do, there sure as hell better be a separatist movement in Albera ’cause if these eastern Canadians don’t get it now they never will.
