Plagarism At The Toronto Star

An alert reader at Angry’s scores this one;

Toronto Star Dec.31 2005
Moon God Drinking Products Co., a skin care company in China, has offered a bounty of 1,000 yuan ($144) for every typographical or literary error found in a day’s editions of four Chinese publications in an attempt to embarrass journalists into better writing.
Hao Mingjian, who came up with the idea for the bounty, said that “China’s press has lost its polish in the past decade or two,” which “reflects a chaotic cultural environment and shows people lack a sense of responsibility.”
We applaud Hao’s initiative, but we have learned over our years at the Star that it is impossible to embarrass journalists. Public humiliation is our stock in trade.

(Reuters) …Nice try, but journalists can’t be embarrassed.

Yowza.

  1. Just going to show socialists have the square root of bugger-all when it comes to new ideas — even their apologists in the press.

  2. To plagerise a story about the commie Chinese yet?!? You would think the Red Star would have an endless supply of original commie material to print.
    Maybe the Star should offer a bounty on every bit of plagarism found in its paper, in order to embarass editors into better editing.

  3. The T.S. will probably get away with this. Betcha they have their fingers crossed and won’t make a retraction/apology/firing without any kind of public pressure.
    They support the Liberals, after all… they’re all the same, aren’t they?

  4. Good work. It looks good on the RED STAR.
    One of these days they will have to write a positive story about the Conservatives. Wonder which Conservative writer they will plagerize.

  5. I guess there’s nothing more important for the Star to comment on these days than a 10-year-old urban myth.

  6. Toronto Star Columnists should get out of their pyjamas and go out for some fresh air.
    We can live without their plagiarized comments like forever :}

  7. Speaking of newspapers, go see the headline/pic at the Ottawa Sun.
    “The Perils of Paul”, aka “I Know Nothing Martin”.
    He hasn’t spoken to Mrs. Martin since 1998? >>>
    By KATHLEEN HARRIS, PARLIAMENTARY BUREAU
    Paul Martin is keeping coy over whether he will resign as Liberal leader if he loses the election, but signalled he would stay on to rule another minority government.
    Speculation has been swirling about potential successors and whether Martin’s leadership days are numbered. The veteran politician told Sun Media he won’t speak about “hypotheticals.”
    “I’m not getting into it,” he said when asked if he will step down if he’s defeated on Jan. 23.
    Martin said he hasn’t had a lengthy talk with wife Sheila about his political future since 1998. At that time, her opinion was “not favourable,” he said, adding he doesn’t think it has changed much. >>>

  8. Typical of the Star. With ethics like this, no wonder they continue to support the Liberals.

    I wonder if Sheila, is experiencing a sense of “exclusion”.

  10. Buried deep within Martin’s comments you’ll find a door marked Exit. He’s ready to concede, and Sheila is holding the door open. A lacklustre campaign, RCMP investigation in the middle of an election, lukewarm hehash of criminal code policies – don’t let the door, or Sheila’s boot, find your ass on the way out, Paul.

  11. Wait, the Yuan has gone up $24! This isn’t plagarism, the person had to research the fair market value of the yawn…err yuan.
    Good thing I read this, I’d better go buy some yuans!
    {cue ‘the hills are…’ from Sound of Music track, fade in some Liberal spinmister doing a twirl on Mt. Assibone err Assiniboine}
    cheers

  12. Crikey, with the Star relying on decade old news, somebody better tell them Trudeau is dead.
