update – the original link was to a legitimate site, but has now gone dead. I can’t find anything online indicating this is a hoax, but it has the distinct smell of one. There are a lot of net references to a petition for a “UNITED NATIONS DECADE OF CONTACT” Petition, but nothing much else.

Until now, it only seemed like UN funding dropped into the void …. now, they’ve made it official;

For the first time in 27 years, the United Nations General Assembly will be debating the issue of establishing diplomatic relations with advanced Extraterrestrial Civilizations that may now be visiting Earth. On December 16, 2005, a Resolution to establish a United Nations Decade of Contact was formally transmitted to the incoming President of the General Assembly, H.E. Jan Eliasson of Sweden by the Institute for Cooperation in Space (ICIS), a Non-Governmental Organization. Almost to the day twenty-seven years ago, on December 18, 1978, the United Nations General Assembly voted to approve decision 33/426, inviting U.N. Member States “to take appropriate steps to coordinate on a national level scientific research and investigation into extraterrestrial life, including unidentified flying objects, and to inform the Secretary-General of the observations, research and evaluation of such activities.”

This sounds like a job for a former Canadian defence minister!

Paul Hellyer destroyed the pride of the CAF with his idea of unification of the armed forces.His ideas of only allowing senior rank promotion of bilingual officers ensured a generation of boot lickers from Quebec(with an eye on keeping their civilian masters happy.. )these men dominate the command structure of the military as it is constituted today.PH was/is a man who believed in the social engineering of the Liberals even as applied to the military.

Paul Hellyer..you have got to be kidding, the only thing he ever done was spend a lot of money ,destroy all esprit de corps,dress everyone in funny uniforms,make the sailors look like bus drivers then head for the hills before he accidently spent all his money.Was he a grit or a tory, he screwed things up so much it is hard to know where to put the blame.

  13. I guess the UN believes it is somehow divinely destined to transform itself into the headquarters of the future United Federation of Planets.
    I can see it now: Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the UFP. He’ll chair assemblies composed of Vulcans, Klingons, Romulans, Ferengi, and, yep, even the Borg (hell, the bad guys of the world have already hijacked the UN, right?).
    Would Marc Garneau get a patronage appointment to the captaincy of the first Federation starship?
