Income Trust: RCMP Investigation Launched

CTV;

he RCMP will conduct a criminal investigation into an alleged leak of changes to income trust rules, the NDP are saying.
Back on Nov. 30, Judy Wasylycia-Leis, the NDP’s finance critic, requested the RCMP review the Nov. 23 announcement and see if anyone in the federal finance ministry tipped off any Bay Street insiders.
“The NDP is demanding that Finance Minister Ralph Goodale step aside while this investigation is going on,” CTV’s Roger Smith told Newsnet.

That’s all they have for now, but expect an update at the link later.

  1. Yes! It’s about time that the RCMP investigate. Now, if the NDP and CP’s stand firm maybe Ralph will be forced to step aside…..one can dream, can’t they?

  2. A late Christmas present. 🙂
One of these times, these dirty bastards are going to go too far… and people will finally wake up, and turn on them.
How anyone can display a Liberal election sign in front of their house is beyond me. It’s like advertising for the mob.
Who wants to bet that Paul Martin will have Gomery exonerate Goodale by the 11 o’clock news?

  3. This all sounds good, but just remember who appoints the boss of the RCMP, and OSC. Get ready for a complete absolution of Goodale even though he is ultimately responsible for a leak of that info. Liberals are a dying, rabies infested dog and are now in a corner, get ready for some dirty true Liberal style morals to come out.

  4. Good on Judy Wasylycia-Leis for making the request and (presumably) keeping the pressure up.  Regardless of how I feel about the NDs otherwise, this is an issue that should concern voters of every stripe and persuasion.
If we can’t go after this kind of stuff and at the very least get verification that nothing underhanded took place, then no one should be surprised if Canadians continue to become disconnected from the political process.
And yeah, Goodale should step aside, if only out of concern for good form.  He can always come back if there’s no evidence of shady dealings.

  5. Correct me if I’m wrong, but this is the first time in history a senior cabinet member’s office was under criminal investigation during an election.
And forget about the ultimate outcome (though I can’t imagine the RCMP touching this hot potatoe unless there was some pretty damning goods) this is devestating for the Liberals.
If the Liberal goose isn’t cooked, it will only be because the media will bend over backward to whitewash and cover up, and given the apparant change of mood, I can’t see that happening.
Say goodnight Alice. Stephen Harper – Canada’s next Prime Minister.

  6. How much you want to bet there won’t be anything made public by the RCMP before January 23rd?

  7. My only hope for the New Year is that the CPC can achieve a majority in the House and maybe we’ll finally get to the bottom of this stinking morass that we have called a government for the last 13 years. I shudder to think what kind of deal Paulie and Jackie will work out if the CPC do not obtain a clearcut majority.

  8. Just saw a clip on CTV, the tag line that went with the story was:
    “Election Bombshell”
If that’s any indication of how the media will treat this story, this is going to get a lot of play.

  9. Sssshhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Lets keep the possibility of a CPC majority quiet.
A minority would suit the people who MAY want to change their vote from Liebral to CPC.
If there is a possibility of a majority they might back off.

  10. does anyone find it funny how the libs said ‘the blogs won’t play a key role in this campaign’?
    Income trust scandal?
    Klander scandal?
    Alberta can blow me scandal?
    Just to name a few.
Ohhh yes, we have the power.

  11. This shouldn’t be a bombshell at all. If the regulating authorities are doing their job, they would have a bunch of Liberal buddies in jail already. The reason it is now a bombshell is because the main stream media, should be “Left Stream Media”, has maybe realized that it is not going to go away due to the bloggers. I hope they go down big time.

  12. Check out the Globe and Mail’s spin:
“News of the criminal investigation comes in the middle of a federal election campaign in which opposition parties have tried to depict the Liberal government as corrupt and scandal-plagued.
Criminal investigations do not always lead to charges.”
    Have tried to depict????????
As if Gomery, the witnessess, reams of evidence and the Judges findings that the Liberal party used a government program to launder taxpayer money into Liberal coffers, was all some “story” concocted by the opposition to score political points.

  13. Shawn, Just to add to your comment, I am going to go get a supply of “beer and popcorn” for the next three weeks!

  14. Is there any difference between this situation and Mr. Sorbara, who stepped side as the Ontario Finace Minister when it was confirmed that he was named in an investigation into events which occurred during his tenure as a Director (I believe this is the title) of a private firm? Oh yeah, the Income Trust story relates to alleged actions by a Ministry which hMr. Goodale is theoretically accountable for. Let’s wait and see what happens next.

  15. I agree with Mike above.
Plus I believe this “investigation” is actually a distraction orchestrated by the political backroom demons to take peoples’ attention away from the racist/sexist/homophobic/disabledophobic/did I miss anything? blogging of a VP of the LPC in Ont. The Liberals are really stinging from this. Worse than corruption and organized criminality for them is to have the voters finally see for themselves the bigotry and intolerance that permeates the Liberal Party. This has the power to drive Liberal voters over to the NDP, splitting votes and causing the Libs to lose seats. So they do this phony investigation thing, either do it quick and have Commissioner Zaccardelli exonerate Paulie M., Gomery-style, or drag it out past election day so it won’t matter anyway too much…

  16. Should a Minister of the Crown step aside while he, or the Ministry he is accountable for, is under investigation by the appropriate authorities?
Is there any difference between this situation and Mr. Sorbara, who stepped side as the Ontario Finace Minister when it was confirmed that he was named in an investigation into events which occurred during his tenure as a Director (I believe this is the title) of a private firm? 17. People, people — they’re investigating, not indicting, yet. Let’s keep our shirts on and our language temperate. Ralph may be cleared. Of course he should step down until he is.
We haven’t seen many principled resignations in recent years. One pines for the days when William Gladstone dissolved his majority government because Queen Victoria refused his advice to fire a certain chamber maid. Chrtien refused to step down even when caught lying and forcing a government bank to loan money to a known arsonist so the latter could buy his money-losing Grand’ Mre Hotel.

  18. From day one this income trust thing has stunk like the slop pail it is. Granpa Canada and Farmer Ralph, uneasy at the prospect of the coming election, decided to hedge their bets. Time to turn loose the rest of the Pigerals to gorge themselves at the proverbial trough, lest the ensuing famine lead to a messy case of cannibalism. George Orwell would be proud!!!

  19. Paul Martin reminds me of Richard Nixon.
Is anybody else getting those vibes about our Prime Minister.
He is not as innocent of all things gone bad and criminal acts exposed as he tries to assert.
All we need is for Martin to protest “I am no crook” and the similarity with Nixon will be complete – or did I miss something and Martin did make that assertion during AdScam enquiry.

  20. One of the lieberals favorite lines folks is. “I can not comment on that question while it is under criminal investigation by the RCMP”. Wait for it.

  21. Aww, Canadian Sentinel, you took away from my line. I had planned to suggest, tongue firmly in cheek, that the Liberals would do ANYTHING to avoid further scrutiny of Klander. And then you have to post:
“I believe this “investigation” is actually a distraction orchestrated by the political backroom demons to take peoples’ attention away from the racist/sexist/homophobic/disabledophobic/did I miss anything? blogging of a VP of the LPC in Ont”
Which wouldn’t have been so bad, except you were SERIOUS! Damn! There goes a great opportunity for subtle humour blown away by the preposterous.
For the record, I predict Klandergate/Goodalegate will be the one-two combo punch that will keep the rope-a-dope Liberals on the ropes for the rest of the campaign. Whenever people tire of hearing “criminal investigation”, “ethical lapses/racism/misogyny/homophobia” will become the issue. And if they tire of hearing about both, “findings of corruption” will always be there.
    All scandal, all the time.

  22. Here’s a prediction. The Pigerals win, the Gruntservatives call for a re-count and the NDPorkers go wee, wee, wee, all the way home.

  23. No klanders, please. Commenter klanders Harper, et al. Drags Aunty-American into the klander. & more.. 1 million of your taxe$ is “cheap change”. Chretien said; so, a cubble millions were stole, so wad, wad ya gonna do boud it, suckers? Corruption..Librano$? da proof is da proof is…>
P M from Windsor, United States writes:
I cant wait to hear the screaming about this on this post soon..the usual “guilty cause you’re LIBERAL” story..
harper and friends/supporters will soon be screaming corruption.. absent proof, absent trial, absent investigation even.. accusation is proof enough in a Harper government
and just like gomery, when a liberal gets exonerated, it won’t matter.. liberals are guilty, even when found innocent
guilty, guilty, the more u scream it, the more votes you get for you hidden rightwing, usa appeasing, war focused, intolerant, xenophobic agenda
1 million dollars is the number the US news is reporting as being stolen, chump change considering the damage a conservative government will inflict on our economy, culture and values.
vote for tolerance, peace and progress, both economic and social..
vote Liberal or NDP depending where you live.

  24. As others have said it’s about time the RCMP started doing their jobs.
If you look at the trading activity of income trusts immediately prior to Goodale’s announcement there had to be something rotten. It was too coincidental by half.
Remember there are two sides to each trade, not only did someone make money, someone probably lost money at the same time.
It is incumbent on the Mounties, OSC and any other governing body to ensure the integrity of the markets. Lets hope the RCMP doesn’t take as long with this investigation as they have with the Adscam culprits.
You just have to wonder how long it will take Canadians to realize the Liberal party needs a time out and that they should be defeated on Jan. 23rd to allow the process to begin

  26. So much for ministerial responsibility.
If these clowns thought they could cancel the election, they would.

  27. Hey Maz, that must be Liberal Style “Canadian Values”. If so you misspelt a few words, it goes.. vote for turpitude, piece (as big as we can get) and platitudes. Yea, that’s the Pigeral spelling!!!OInk, OinK, OINK……..

  28. Mansbridge, in covering the IT scandal revelation of RCMP investigation, interviewed Goodale who said he would not step aside while the investigation is underway. Claimed that it was “different” than the Sorbara situation.

  29. Cubble dat wif dis websigh; Goody’s:
I encourage you to spend some time viewing my site. Should you have any questions or comments about the Liberal party platform or issues that I have addressed, please feel free to contact my campaign at ralphgoodale@sasktel.net or drop by the campaign office at 2129 Broad Street. >>>>
No can find “Income Trust”, “Income”, “Trust” there. Found Paul Martin. Paul Who?
    Psst: Buy low; sell high.
    >>>
E-mail: ralphgoodale@sasktel.net. Ralph is inviting questions/comments. And, feel free to contact/drop in at 2129 Broad Street, Sask.

  30. I bet Ralphie’s ass is starting to sweat. He has nothing to worry about in Canada, if the Libs get re-elected, but what about the SEC in the US?
Is he the next Martha Stewart?
Lots of those stocks that the dividend rules were changed on also trade on the NYSE.
Wouldn’t that be sweet to see all that US bashing come back to bite the Libs in the ass?
Of course since Ralph is a potential leadership threat to Big Paulie, I’m sure he wouldn’t mind seeing Ralph in the slammer.

  31. Erik, of course this is different. Ralph is “Entiteled” to a different level of consideration. He’s double-secret, extra innocent until it’s proven he has plausible deniability. JeeeZ!!!

  32. The Washington Post, New York Times and The Wall Street Journal have all been made aware of this ITScam in terms of those Canadian stocks that also trade in the US. The SEC was contacted by the NDP a week ago as well. If Canada isn’t capable of a credible investigation, maybe the U.S. will take this opportunity to once again get involved in the Canadian election campaign?

  33. Being a bear for punishment I couldn’t resist looking at the ‘Mother” network ‘news’ tonight. How does the ‘clown’ in charge there have the nerve to spend almost twice as much air time on the American Red Cross scandal as they did on the Income Trust scandal. Then I thought about it, better to bash all things American than to shine a light on a government that has brought doubt into the integrity of the Canadian Stock Market. No mention of the companies, banks, brokers, etc. involved because we are dealing with millions here but let’s bash some Americans for stealing…. ( I think they mentioned $400,000.) They showed the American police hauling some off to custody, but in Canada we wave a paper around as if it is some great coup. I don’t want to see some whitewashed investigation, like the Gomery inquirey, I want to see some indictments, I want to see some of these crooks get what they deserve, not their entitlements.

  34. Ann, I just hope the American media doesn’t come on too strong. I can hear Granpa Canada wrapping himself and the rest of those thieving …tards in the flag. The worst part is that will play for many. Interesting days ahead. Stay tuned.

  35. Folks, all Ralph Goodale has managed to do is extend the news cycle of this story. He should just have stepped aside. By not doing so, he has given extra legs to the story, that Harper can butress by more of his “one-a-days”.

  36. Check the quotes in Goodale’s “I’m staying” interviews. It’s all about him being cleared and him personally having nothing to do with this mess.
    I believe him.
But I also think he knows who did what.
If you read carefully, you’ll notice that Ralph is no longer saying that no funny business took place… just that he wasn’t in on it.
I guess we’ll find out in the next few days whether or not Ralph is willing to get thrown under the bus to protect Team Martin.

  37. I agree with Erik, this story ain’t going away and Mr Goodale’s position as Finance Minsiter will indoubatably become untennable. The pressure will intesify, and it’s already getting to the him.
na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye!

  38. I had to chuckle when I saw the line “One of these times, these dirty bastards are going to go too far”. (At the risk of dating myself) I was reminded of an editorial cartoon that ran during the U.S. Watergate hearings. It showed two of the panel members, in a multi-panel cartoon, talking about the Dean testimony. First panel read something like “So now we know for sure the President was in the room when the break-in was discussed.” Reply: “That sinks it for Nixon! He can’t claim he didn’t know.”
Next panel, they’re getting visibly more excited. “Yeah, and that part about Nixon being warned there was a cover-up – that leaves him without any credibility!”
Next panel, they’re both looking downcast as they continue their conversation. “Still, if only he had shot someone on national TV.” Reply: “Yeah. Then we’d have him for sure.”

  39. Liberal lawyer buddies make millions of dollars from insider trading – and it still barely registers with the news media!? Is it only because the media routinely ignore other Liberal crimes that they’re complacent about the latest?
If Harper picked up a dime from the sidewalk and didn’t claim it on his income taxes, Canadian media would have a fit.
But if Prime Minister Paul Martin wrote laws as Finance Minister so he didn’t have to pay his taxes to Canada, this country he claims to love so much and wants to govern, Canadian media just yawn…

  40. Look what I found:
    “December 10, 2005
Martin linked Medisys Income Trust stock volume increased 3400% the day before Goodale trust announcement
    by M.K. Braaten
    UPDATE:
According to STOCKTRENDS.ca, the day before the Goodale income trust announcement, the trading volume of Medisys Income Trust was 226,500, with a value of $2,604,750, average trade was $37,750, and a total of 68 transactions. According to StockTrends.ca, this stock was listed as trading at Unusual Volumes. Click here for the report.
The volume of shares traded for Paul Martin linked Medisys Income Trust shares the day before the Income Trust announcement seems way to high to be a co-incidence. The volume increased 3400% from the prior day, and the following day, dropped back down about the same amount.
Its said that Paul Martins personal doctor started a medical company called Medisys Income Trust, a chain of private health care clinics located across Canada.
The day before the Goodale income trust announcement, the volume of Medisys shares traded for the day went from 5,714 on November 21, to 203,953 on Novemeber 22. On November 23, the shares traded dropped back down to 6,220.
Check out this other chart here and scroll down to Nov 22. This is a huge red flag; someone has some explaining to do. Why would the trading volume increase that much? Its not like they discovered the cure for cancer that day.
However, beyond speculation, one has to open the possibility that this stock market activity is pure co-incidence. There is no way to make a connection between this share activity and the income trust announcement and the Liberal Party unless there is hard evidence of a leak. Currently there is no evidence, and perhaps it doesnt exists; keep in mind that correlation is not causation. But looking at it based on pure logic, it does raise many questions.
These questions should be answered by the proper authorities. Huge spikes in trading, similar to this, are flagged by agencies of the markets which specialise in looking for this. Nonetheless, I think the Ontario Securities Exchange commissions reputation could be irreparably harmed if they do not commence an investigation into this issue. The red flags are everywhere; the evidence seems far too suspicious.
If you feel like sending a complaint to Market Regulation Service, do it here.
    Update:
Angry picked up where I left off:”
Which brings us to the question, why hasn’t the mainstream media picked up on any of this?

  41. Did anyone catch the 10pm Regina broadcast of the CBC national news? It was truly bizarre.
Two minutes into the broadcast, they lead off with the Goodale story. Then, there was an abrupt and inexplicable cut to commercial.
The Goodale story was dead-run for the three-minutes of commercial time. They came back just in time to catch Mansbridge needling Ralph as to why he wasn’t resigning. And then…
    They cut to commercials again!
One would almost think that some Liberal in the local CBC control booth was trying to kill the story.
    Makes you wonder.
