Maryantonett Flumian

…is coming to a government department near you;

On Monday, Maryantonett Flumian will take up a position as the DM responsible for Service Canada, which is a massive initiative to centralize ‘customer service’ functions in a single organization, while decentralizing the adminstration to various regional centers.
It is a major project, and at present no minister is directly accountable for it, because it is shared across multiple departments – as is the budget. There is no real plan, just the idea of simplifying contact for citizens. Money has been spent to build the minister’s office, but no minister yet.
Now, I agree with both that idea and moving work to regional centers. But on the other hand, this is exactly how the HRDC boondoggle started – and Service Canada will handle EI, CPP, all other income security, Canada Student Loans, Social Insurance Numbers, and possibly even Passports.
That is a huge area of responsibility, and a daunting management challenge. So the bureaucrat should be about the best we have in the civil service. So who is Maryantonett Flumian?
Biography
That’s right, the sharp knife that managed the gun registry. If she can screw up the gun registry that badly, think of the nightmare that she can create in something of this scale.
“Your old age pensions are being run by the people who did the gun registry”

  1. No,Richard, that’s “Aw Carp.”
    I thought that the Peter Principle meant people rise to their level of incompetence. This woman appears to have soared well above that level… who does she know?

  2. Why do I have dread for my pocket book and quality of government services when I hear announcements like this?
    I remember Ms. Flumian (The “fixer” as she is called in civil service circles)as the so called bureaucratic wonder kid the Feds threw at we besieged duck gun owners who were already mired in the unworkable red tape and deadlines of the civilian long gun registry system. Again, we see the Feds throw a career bureaucrat with no first hand knowledge, or formalized plan to untangle the vastly technical subject which she had been assigned. The effect was a little like sending one’s favorite trained chimp to defuse the digital interface to an armed warhead. A perfect skill set/task “fit” in Fed logic. What the public got for the millions her traveling roadshow and high-paid entourage cost, was a system that is still abhorent to law abiding end users and totally ignored by the criminal element…however, it was not her job to make it workable….it was her job to make it APPEAR workable …and in Fed-Lib thinking this is all that is needed. So at the time she was installed in the registry system, there was a massive backlog of registrations to process and a massive amount of firearms owners (about 5 million) who had not yet complied and registered (through either mistrust of federal motives or antipathy towards the unwarranted red tape)
    The brilliant solution we paid MF such a lavish salary,bonus and compliments for, was simply to make the compliance numbers look better by licencing anyone with 10 bucks and a telephone to call in the request. The forms were simplified, and most of the police/bureaucratic interface was dropped…Like registrant background checks, verification of input gun data. Following MF’s brilliant “tweeking” of the registry system it was another 5.2 million in debt from lost revenues and bureaucratic costs and the system was made largely ineffective at acheiving it’s stated purpose.
    MF was responsible for making the system a rubber stamp for volumes and a sieve for catching irresponsible gun users. This was the era when there were substantiated reports of dogs, cats, hells Angels and dead people being issued firearms permits and waggs registering hair dryers and soldering guns.
    Long live the Fed’s “Fixer”…on to the next system to devolve and on to continued promotional rewards for dismal mediocrity.

  3. No doubt there was gross and stupid mismanagement of the gun registry. But in light of Adscam and everything else the Liberals have done for the last decade, does anyone still think that the $2 billion and counting lost on the gun registry really just went to “unfortunate software choices” and the like? And now we’re to have a massive new bureaucracy run across departments. Hmm, am I the only one who thinks that the real purpose of this might not be to simplify citizens’ access to the government, but rather to replace a no-longer functioning programme run mostly in the province of Quebec? Anyone else afraid that Ms Flumian might actually be very competent at her new job?

  5. Is Maryantonett going to tell us to eat cake after aiding and abetting all the major fleeces the gov’t has been accomplishing over the years?

  6. I don’t see what all the fuss over this appointment is about. With MF’s background the liberals are putting us one more step closer to a benign communist dictatorship. As far as the “Let them eat cake.” allegory perhaps a better one would be; “MF makes Typhoid Mary look like a saint.”
