If we are talking ethics, we must practice ethics. Anything else breeds cynicism and the audience we need to target are not the 24% of the population that votes Liberal but the 40% of the population that has tuned out and does not vote. A large part of that group sees no point in voting as they perceive all political types as self-serving pond scum. Or at least they profess that line because it excuses their inaction.
A key to electoral success is to convince more of those uninvolved 40% to support us. Those 40% constitute a good chunk of the population that is saying they don’t want an election. The more that that number decreases, the fewer the people that are saying they don’t want an election, is an indication that more people care and as a result the greater the chance for getting rid of the current bunch.
Convincing those outside the fray to get involved will not happen by screaming epithets at the other side, nor by stroking our own egos by telling each other the things we want to hear, nor by resorting to tactics that are beyond the pale in High School.
The increase in the number of people asking for an election is indicative of things changing.
A current breakdown of 30/30/20/15/5 Lib/Con/NDP/BQ/Others amongst 60% the population that votes, as an example, means an actual vote of 18/18/12/9/3/40 where 40 belongs to the Dontgivadam Party. Convincing 5% of them to switch to join the Conservatives would change the numbers to 18/23/12/9/35 or 28/35/18/14/5 on decided voters giving the Conservatives as 7 point lead and including some motivated supporters. This is the lesson of Karl Rove and GWB. This is what the Liberals fear.
Kerb our tongues, act and talk civilly and ethically and win over the cynical. They are easier to convince than Liberals and NDP supporters and ultimately more valuable.
I know a comments section is a poor place to lay out an argument, so I’ll just elaborate on something youve’ written that I think is worth discussion. Karl Rove comes up a lot in discussions of electoral strategy, but I don’t think a lot of people know very much about what it is.
Rovian strategy isn’t about convincing a percentage of a homogenized electorate, or lumping voters into geographical regions. It has nothing to do with “civility” or who plays dirty tricks. It’s about cherry picking and favourable cost-benefit ratios when crafting a party platform.
It’s about making sure your core supporters are satisfied that your ideology remains firm enough to keep happy and motivated, and then identifying new voter demographics where you can make inroads by identifying how your party can present inviting choices on their important issues.
Example off the top of my head:
Stephen Harper’s speaking to urban immigrants on same-sex marriage. You won’t convince them to vote Conservative on the issue of corruption – many of the countries they come from are institutionally corrupt. They’re generations away from outrage.
But, you can get their motors running on gay marriage. If yours is the only party offering that, it’s gold. High benefit.
Conversely, those who feel so strongly about SSM that it’s their bottom line issue are highly unlikely to move to the Conservatives by simply changing party policy. You can save your energies on trying to convince them to vote for you, but getting them to vote for a third party is worth some effort.
By the way… why does everyone assume I’ve been given the info by “the Conservatives”?
