  1. Kate, thanks for posting this article. As a quantitative financial analyst, I am familiar with and use Principal Components Analysis and Monte Carlo simulations to help to value, hedge, and manage the risk of financial deals. It is fun for me to see these techniques used in another context.
With regard to the global warming controversy, I am always amazed at the dishonesty of many people who discuss it. The people I am complaining about argue that evidence of global warming means that strict (socialist) government regulation must be enforced to stop it. This approach (willfully?) ignores many possibilities. For example, this approach ignores the possibility that the warming may have little to do with human activity, the possibility that the warming is desirable, the possibility that the strict government regulations might cause more harm than the warming, the possibility that the strict government regulation might not have the desired effects, the possibility that socialist style government regulations may not be the best way to address the problems and on and on and on. You might even get the impression that the government regulation is what is really, truly important to these people and that global warming and the environment is really, truly of secondary importance to them.
