“Fossil fuels subsidies” as described in the media for the most part don’t exist – are governments really willing to build policy on a fictitious concept?

Pay attention everyone, this is important: people proposing to govern our mighty country are proposing to pay for part of it by reducing “traffic congestion costs imposed by one driver on other vehicle occupants” or by squeezing money out of someone for “travel delays” that are “monetized using evidence about the relationship between wages and how people value travel time.” Believe it or not, that is one imbecility being flouted in the media as a “fossil fuel subsidy”. 1. The definition of a “fossil fuel subsidy” is so broad as to be ludicrous. Merely reducing royality rates when the price of oil plummets is counted as a subsidy.

  2. The only “Fossil Fuel subsidy” I am aware of … is the IRS deduction for business expenses, including building new plant and equipment. The same “subsidy” as EVERY legitimate business in America. But its NOT a “subsidy”, that is a twisting of words in typical leftist fashion.

The whole charade about “Fossil Fuel subsidies” should be laughed out of the room

    1. I’ve heard folks try to argue that the costs of drilling a dry or exploration hole shouldn’t be deductible from the profits of the producing holes. I try not to laugh too hard when I hear that.

  3. The “Fossil Fuel Subsidy” argument is an invention of the “sustainable” energy industry to explain why their heavily subsidized energy is still not competitive with fossil fuel.

A complete fabrication made from whole cloth with no evidence, just a lot of arm waving.

Some how, building roads is subsidizing oil production?

  4. We need to stop using white nationalist Alberta oil, and if we have to buy oil, it should be from tolerant and compassionate people of colour from the likes of Saudi Arabia and Venezuela!

  5. Middle East dictators sit on gold toilet seats in their personal 747’s by subsidizing oil? Who knew…

That sounds just like Las Vegas, they build massive extravagant casinos by giving away money….

  6. “Are governments really willing to build policy on a fictitious concept?”

Duh. They’re ALL OVER global warming!

  7. YK, there would not be a single wind turbine or solar panel without billions in government subsidies. They will never power the country, ever.

  8. Depreciation doesn’t count as subsidizing oil and gas.

The only real fuel subsidies are those found in Venezuela and Muslim petro-states where the local tyrants give away gasoline. Get back to me when people with Alberta drivers’ licenses can fill up free of charge, from sea to sea, as the price of putting up with the French and the Indians.

  9. Build policy on a fictitious concept? You mean like global warming? Y2K? Murdered and missing Indian women? No we would never do that.

  10. There is one subsidy that no one addresses: the huge increase in oil price borne of USD depreciation. This drives a shale drilling boom that probably wouldn’t exist otherwise.

Besides that, some countries do actually give away gas and other fossil fuels at a discount. That should end. Traffic congestion can be solved with tolls. That should start.

    1. So letting floating currencies float is a subsidy in your mind?

And you’re telling other countries how to run their internal affairs because you know better than they do. Doesn’t that make you a racist cultural imperialist?
