  1. Hats off to whoever played that song. I was 17 in the summer of ’67. I went to work on a highway crew. We had a new IHC TD-30 dozer. (Same size as a Cat D-8.) Even by today’s standards, the TD-30 would still be a big machine.
    The bulldozer operators quit and left the 3 scrapers with no pusher. I had to be 18 to operate a Cat. The foreman made me a fake ID card, and told me if Workers Compensation came around to show them the card. Unlike today where you have five pickup trucks parked on the road with five consultants telling one Dozer operator how to dig out an old culvert, (visualize SNC Lavalin) we worked like devils, day and night. One foreman on duty to run the show., along with 2 occasional highway inspectors. Two months later, I went back to school and had enough cash to keep my 57 Chevrolet full of gas all winter.

    1. I talked to my son working in Ft. Mac yesterday. I asked him about the article if he was aware of it, he said their were huge lineups to vote right on the job. He was confident that Nutter is going to lose.
      I think the oil patch and the farmers will boot her ass. Redmonton will vote NDP. But the one that is a worry is Calgary.
      So many are against Kenney. Trudeau and his minions, all of the State controlled media, all of the Unions, the RCMP.
      I see this election as a pivot point for the whole country. Maybe more important than the repudiation of Wynn and the Liberal Crooks in Ontario.
      The west, Sask. and Alberta are the breadbasket and the treasury of the country. Kenney is talking a big fight with Ottawa. If you think about it imagine the status of Canada without the almost 1T in transfers and taxes in the last 30 years. The 1 Trillion number was Prof Mansel of Calgary. It was quoted by Kenney in his speech on Wednesday.
      Will the Western Deplorables be able to get the leeches and bloodsuckers of their body? Take that 1T cash flow away from Eastern Canada and what do you have left. The country is finished. They finally broke the bank. We know who was paying the bills and welfare in Canada now, it was Mom and Dad in Alberta. I do not think there is a case in history were less than 4M citizens paid 1T in taxes in 30 years like Alberta has. It is criminal. Alberta needs to get out.
      Kenney getting elected and if he does all he says it will be a different country maybe even no country. The Populist uprising is spreading.
      I hope Kenney can kick the bloodsuckers off the porch and get them out of the yard. It will be a 24/7 onslaught of CBC Propaganda against Alberta and Kenney. He will be our Donald Trump moment. Alberta’s only solid friend seems to be Sask. I sure wish Wall was still Premier there, I liked him. I guess we will see shortly.

      1. My dog loves Beggin’ Strips. We tried Milk Bones and Denta Bones, and she just hides them somewhere in the house. It was pretty funny finding them hidden in the couch cushions, and shoes, and under pillows.

        1. One house I pass by on my way to the nearby Superstore used to have a large dog, a husky or something, and it always barked at anyone who walked along the sidewalk.

          One day, I went over to talk to him and see if I could be friends. It turned out that the critter was so vicious that I was in serious danger of being licked to death. I mentioned that to my mother during one of our phone conversations and she suggested that I take along some Milk Bone for it.

          I started doing that and the dog was always glad to see me. He’d come over to the fence along the sidewalk and lick my hand. I scratched him behind his ears and on his snout, ending each encounter with a Milk Bone, which he gladly received.

    2. It saddens me every time I think about that. In 1967, there was genuine optimism about this country and pride in being one of its citizens. It was as if the future was ours.

      And then, inexplicably, Canadians elected PET. I remember people in high school mocking me for saying that he wouldn’t be good for the country. Enjoy your enslavement to Quebec….

    That crazy Confederation song drove you nuts and Expo ’67 was over-rated.

    If one did not have full season’s passport, the entrance fee to the park was costly, as a one day affair. The pavilion displays were interesting but the amusement park was one of the main attractions for young people. There were fireworks every night.

    It was enjoyable to walk the park or ride the raised tracked mono-rail trains from place to place. The American pavilion was my favourite. The train went right through it. This was a big attraction with visitors. There were many people from all over the World roaming Expo and the city. Every hotel was booked solid for six months. People opened their homes to accommodate the overflow.

    The Exposition grounds were built on man-made islands. Construction took years to complete. There was a natural island called Saint Helen’s which featured 3 Olympic sized swimming pools, built before Expo ’67. There were paved pathways on the island for strollers and picnic tables scattered throughout the wooded island. The biggest secret here was that the various kiosks throughout Saint Helen’s, featured the best tasting food, and at a reasonable price. One could get burgers, dogs, fries etc without breaking the bank. At the various International Pavilions there were featured restaurants that served the tasty delights of the individual country. In most cases it seemed a tad costly for street urchins like myself and friends.

    There were buses to the island, but many folks walked over on the scary Jacques Cartier Bridge. By 1967 the site had Métro station access. The subway had been tunneled under the Saint Lawrence River. This was an amazing and costly feature for a subway system. It extended to South Shore Montreal and commuters had a new way to get to the Expo grounds and the City.

    Montreal is a beautiful city. Mount Royal is right in its heart. There is a Cross on the top of the mountain that is lit every night. It is a wonderful landmark, even romantic, as some have remarked.

    At times I miss it.
    At times I hate it because Justin Trudeau has trashed the country just like his father did.

    What is it with these Communists? Hateful lot.

      Out here in the buck brush the school which went to grade 10 organized a cross country train trip to Montreal. The kids who went on the train still talk about it. Of course the ‘kids’ are grandparents today – ha but the country left a lasting impression.

      Oh, and education didn’t end at grade 10 in 1967 it’s just that the students from ‘out here’ went on to billet in the cities. My rancher buddy who I feed for on occasion finished grade 12 in Red Deer and was at the U of A just after his 17th birthday.

      Trump, Ford, Scheer, Kenney, Moe and Pallister. East coast ‘conservatives’ will be spared the vitriol as bongo knows he can buy the fishworld vote.

      If notley gets her clock cleaned that may give the libranos cause for pause. I can’t see that happening to her. It may be more like the ’15 federal election. Yes the libranos won but the CPC wasn’t obliterated.

      1. Literally just read the article. You literally have it backwards: the report clears him specifically of ‘criminal conspiracy’ but not collusion. Indeed it makes clear that collusion absolutely happened. It’s also clear that collusion isn’t a crime per se.

          “I have been authorized by the Department of Justice to confirm that the FBI, as part of our counterintelligence mission, is investigating the Russian government’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election and that includes investigating the nature of any links between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia’s efforts. As with any counterintelligence investigation, this will also include an assessment of whether any crimes were committed.”

          The implication is that Mueller DID find evidence re links/co-ordination between the Trump campaign and Russians.

          1. It’s also bad investment. All the inputs you need to buy with that currency instantly become more expensive. All the income you get in that currency is worth less. Investment is a sacrifice today for a stream of dollars tomorrow. If those dollars are going to be worth less investment is not a great idea.

            I don’t have the study handy (it was in the FP) but some folks actually got around to critically testing the ‘weaker money helps exports’ idea and it didn’t hold up for reasons that are pretty obvious: inputs like oil and other materials automatically become way more expensive.

            The US did this experiment already: Bush collapsed the USD in the 2000s. It did not beget more jobs or exports or anything good. It’s basically the reason oil and housing went bananas. So no the lower CAD is not the reason for this.

    I am aware dog trainers prefer owners to use positive reinforcement when teaching dogs not to make a mess in the house and to come when called. Your dog is unlikely to end up in jail or on the game—and if you really can’t teach the damn thing how to behave, nobody will think badly of you if you dump it at the pound to be “re-homed.” Parents of human children don’t have that luxury.

    1. I was raised in the old country tradition. If I did something wrong, I expected to get punished for it and, yes, I got my share of corporal discipline from both of my parents. (I once shared an office with a chap who was born in eastern Europe but grew up in Canada. He told similar stories about his childhood.)

      All I have to show for the upbringing they inflicted upon me was staying out of trouble with the law, never getting involved with drugs, getting a good education, and becoming a member of a respected profession. Yup, my parents sure warped me for life, didn’t they? Imagine how much I would have accomplished if they used “positive parenting”…..

    I was 15 that summer, got separated from my 2 brothers and spent the rest of the day wandering about.
    it started to rain and the lineup for the russian pavilion scrammed, so I got in the new line and saved 2 hours.
    the american pav was an interesting structure, but the exhibit was all space race neat, and hollyweird crapola.
    cdn pav was a mystery.
    habitat was a laugh. who the fcuk would want to live here ?????
