January 1, 2019: Happy New Year Prediction Thread

We’re going to switch things up a little tonight. Instead of tips, I invite your predictions for 2019.

We’ll check back next December to see how well you did (barring a successful forecast involving the Yellowstone supervolcano).

  1. Right now, I’m watching NASA’s coverage of the New Horizons flyby of the Kuiper Belt Object nicknamed Ultima Thule. I don’t think it’s much of a prediction to say that spacecraft’s observations will raise more questions than answers and the KBO won’t have much in common with any other bodies observed in the solar system.

    Ultima Thule is now the farthest object that’s been closely observed by a space probe.

    We won’t know what the results are for several hours as it’ll take that long for the signal from New Horizons to be received by ground stations.

    1. Are NASA’s images still getting better and better no matter how old the equipment or distance?

      1. Ensuring image detail and clarity was a problem when Voyager 2 was flying towards Uranus. The equipment and data processing algorithms that had been used for the flybys of Jupiter and Saturn were designed for the available sunlight at those two planets. Since the encounters with Uranus and Neptune were, if I recall correctly, considered optional, depending on how things went at Saturn, some revisions were necessary.

        One way around the lower lighting conditions was to modify how the image data was stored, making better use of available on-board memory. Another was that the way in which the images were obtained was changed, so that the camera would focus on a given target and then slew as the spacecraft flew by, remaining fixed on that location. That allowed for longer exposures of the features in question, and, thereby, increasing the amount of detail that would be captured.

        The encounter with Ultima Thule was not, I believe, in the original mission profile and was added after Pluto because there was enough power and on-board fuel available. It was a case of “use it or lose it”, particularly since New Horizons was flying into unknown territory. I’m sure that similar changes to how the images are acquired and stored were made by mission planners.

        While these missions take several years to complete, whenever such changes are deemed necessary, the people involved have plenty of time to figure out what to do and to test whatever solutions are proposed.

        1. BA, the “new” digital enhancing they have formulated will work well in cleaning up much of what is sent back to earth. They just recently were able to clear up an image from Dealey Plaza, 1963, and it was a man with a rifle, behind that damning picket fence! They didn’t say is it was HLO running around shooting from a different angle or not. You should ask Night99 about that.

          1. What you describe is a data filtering method. What I was referring to was how the image data itself is stored on board the spacecraft. Longer exposure times under reduced illumination will require more memory.

            What the imaging team came up with for the Uranus and Neptune flybys by Voyager 2 was a way to store that information more efficiently by using a different method of encoding it. I remember reading about it some 30 years ago. It’s quite clever and the results showed that it was also quite effective.

      I’ll revise my earlier statement and predict that the results from both probes will produce more questions than answers, but will yield some interesting insights.

    Prediction 3: Great Britain has an increasing problem with boat loads of refugees.
    Prediction 4: World wide recession. (Hope I’m wrong.)

    I predict that P.M. will run out of other people’s money, and well anyways, get a promotion to work for the Bilderbergs in Europe. It will be a nice change for the whole family. The Greenies will choke on their own green slime. Justy will be so bored with them. Of course Prince Harry and friends will be there to ski with in the Alps. Lucky Maggie will visit with Charles and Camilla, and everything will be so cozy!

      As for the federal election, the Liberals won’t have to work very hard to win the election as Andrew Scheep will hand it to them.

  8. I wish I could give good predictions for 2019. I cannot.
    I will say this, though: we survived 2018 and it was very bad for Albertans and for me personally. I do not have hope for 2019.
    I do have hope in God, and I know many people have suffered not only this year, but in history, worse than I have from tyrants.

The same voters who supported him in his home riding protest that he is not qualified to be Dog Catcher due to his lack of experience. Then there is an uprising amoung delinquent dogs who refuse to be caught by an unqualified individual with zero experience. People’s Party turns out to be more formidable than expected but is undermined during the campaign by rookie mistakes as well as various self & media inflicted wounds; wins just enough seats to be kingmaker following next election (Liberal minority government). Forced to actually acknowledge the opposition, Captain Selfie’s head explodes, leading to the house losing confidence. As the effects of the worldwide recession are beginning to be felt in full, Canadians return to the polls in 2020 and elect a Scheer majority, bolstered by support from Max Bernier who folds his party after Scheer promises to make him Finance Minister. They are renamed the People’s Conservative Party. They run as the “PCs.”

    I’m not saying a supervolcano, but an eruption somewhere on the ring of fire bigger than Mt St Helen’s, will drive down temperatures and destroy crops worldwide for more than a year. Trudeau will blame Alberta and SUV’s, increasing carbon taxes. The ‘refund’ on carbon taxes that is going to be more than we pay in will be confiscated under other programs – increased CPP and Employment Insurance rates; higher provincial taxes everywhere; and progressive municipal gov’ts raising more taxes for stuff they make up, like wider bike lanes.

  14. RBG will pass away. DJT will have the opportunity to appoint another SC judge. This will be the most important issue of the year. I think the D’s will try everything to derail the appointment in advance to avoid another Kavanaugh debacle.

    The AB provincial election will be similar to the 2018 ON provincial election. The federal election campaigns will be greatly affected by this. Trudeau will win a minority. The NDP will back him.

    TSX will reach 16,000. Before July.

    4. FYI, I live in the riding that elected the first Reform MP in Ontario. The riding at the time was overwhelmingly composed of farmers and engineers, i.e. realists. That demographic has shifted over the last few years as this area gets built out. It is disappointing to see people who make emotional choices rather than rational ones carry the day but I am not giving up hope. There is a younger generation coming up that understands that you can’t borrow your way out of debt nor can you truly become an adult unless you carry your own burdens. These are the people that will make a difference going forward. Oddly enough, most of them have parents who immigrated to Canada in the last number of years and who seems to have more of the “Canadian” values I grew up with then many of the people I know who were born here.

      Now for my predictions:
      1. Alberta will elect Jason Kenney to a majority government.
      2. Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta form a political block as a self defence measure thereby representing well over half the population of Canada and a clear majority of its wealth and productivity.
      3. A pipeline gets approved from Alberta to the St. Laurence Seaway through the use or threat of use of the not withstanding clause thus bringing Alberta oil to tide water. Trudeau takes credit for unifying Canadians.
      4. Federal Conservatives are elected to a minority government and are propped up by a power sharing arrangement with the PPC who have a strong showing in Quebec and Alberta.
      5. (This one is ugly) someone goes after Doug Ford’s mother.

      And one for 2020, Canada revises some of its trade relationships and the tariffs on steel and aluminum are removed.

    People will start to react to disease being brought in from the caravans and will back Trump on immigration.

    Trump will take on the Federal Reserve along with Rand Paul. Trump will call for audit of Federal Reserve.

  19. I predict, with unbounded optimism, that Lockheed Martin Skunk Works will have their first prototype fusion reactor by the end of the year. This evolutionary inflection point will be greeted by the Gang Green Marxist as a bad thing; a capitalist plot to make everyone in the world so energy rich that they won’t care anymore about taking other people’s money.

    1. Experimental nuclear fusion reactors have existed for many years but they haven’t been very efficient nor did they run for extended periods of time, which a commercial unit would require.

      It would be nice if an inertial electrostatic confinement focused fusion reactor, nicknamed the polywell, was built and demonstrated to be commercially feasible, using boron 11 as the fuel. (The advantage is that it’s a simple design, boron is relatively cheap and readily available as borax, and the process produces no neutrons.) The U. S. Navy funded a polywell project, starting, as I recall, in the 1990s, but the money ran out about a dozen years go largely due to the war in Iraq, as I recall. The result was no further funding was available and the project was mothballed.

      Most of work that’s being done right now is based on the tokamak design, though there are other proposed approaches, such as the stellerator. The ITER project in France won’t be ready for several years and is already dreadfully over-budget.

      Still, a working fusion reactor producing commercial levels of power would be interesting, particularly if it uses an aneutronic process.

        As it celebrates its 75th anniversary, the Skunk Works is in the middle of a huge and unexplained growth spurt.

        1. There are certain advantages to the tokamak design with regards to confining the magnetic field and ensuring that those fields are continuous. That’s why its basic shape is a torus.

          However, getting the plasma to the temperature required to initiate fusion is a problem. Worse, however, is that the fuel is hydrogen and/or deuterium. The reactions produce neutrons and those neutrons will be adsorbed by the upper layer of the vessel lining. Initially, there will be sufficient space in the interstices inside the material to contain them.

          With time, though, the neutrons will be packed in there so closely that the vessel material will start expanding, something which has been noticed with cladding on fuel rods for fission reactors. (That’s one reason why, sometimes, fuel rods get stuck inside those reactors during refueling.) Eventually, the vessel lining material will reach its maximum limit of expansion and begin spalling, which means the reactor will have to be shut down and either repaired (a difficult task) or decommissioned.

          I don’t think that ITER, if it ever gets running, will answer that question.

  22. Trudeau wins reelection in a landslide: Atlantic Canada and Quebec go entirely Liberal, Ontario and the major urban centres do the same, and the rest is predictable. A weak NDP and massive spending promises give the grits more seats than they have now, while media coverage shifts from the ‘charming’ Trudeau (hey, look at my socks, outfit, etc) to the senior statesman Trudeau, desperately looking for his “just watch me” moment.

    I’m not trolling. That’s just in the tea-leaves.

Hillary Clinton emerges as the Democrat front runner … and attracts MORE fans to HER political Rallys than PDJT … because it’s still “her turn” … and she’s still “the smartest woman in the world”. SHE writes a new book; What Happened – Vol. II … which presents a detailed comparison between Trump and Adolph Hitler.

    And is then nominated at the 2020 Dem Convention with Beto the friendly white heespanick as HER running mate.

  24. The Greens will displace the NDP and some Liberals allowing the CPC to eke out a slim majority government with Mad Max and his three PQ MPs as King makers. The S&P 500 will have one more good run peaking in 2020 or 2021. The Trans Mountain expansion will continue in regulatory stasis. Alberta will elect Kenny and immediately establish an army to annex most of BC and build the pipeline in defiance of the feds. All gun owning British Columbians will join with them and when the expeditionary force reaches Burnaby where it encounters its first resistance of three drunken Indians and a few dozen ripped university students who demand safe spaces at the first sight of a gun, all further resistance collapses as the threat of being taken as POWs and sent to Edmonton is all the incentive they need to give up and wander off to look for some good “skunk”.

    Venezuela will continue to starve.
    South Africans will take a long, hard look at the failure of Zimbabwe, and then say, “Hold my Beer” anyway.
    All the Democrats need to do to increase their power is act sane. They won’t.
    They will introduce Articles of Impeachment, but Speaker Pelosi will bury them. The neutral unbiased MSM will demand Impeachment!
    Record cold temperatures will be blamed on Anthropogenic Global Warming.

    Trump gets to replace a liberal US Supreme Court Justice. It may not be RBG, Breyer is 80, and Sotomayor is diabetic. The insanity of the Democrats over his selection becomes epic.
    Pakistan will do something stupid, and people will wonder about their nukes?

  26. I will predict that all debt in Canada, federal, provincial, municipal and personal will expand. I predict that the economic activity to generate revenue to pay those debts will decrease. I will predict that welfare migrants will overwhelm the ability to feed clothe and house them and that the onslaught will not stop. I will predict that what little freedom is left in Canada will disappear like snow in June, and that more police stops without cause will expand. I will predict that the level of negativity will soon match mine.

    7. Albertans vote 80% to renegotiate equalization. Turdeau says that is unCanadian and there is nothing to negotiate
    8. Kenny applies a $5/litre carbon tax to oil products going to BC and Quebec. BC says they’ll buy gasoline from USA. Americans raise prices of gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel sent to BC and Quebec
    9 Kenny announces an Alberta Provincial Police force. Mounties to leave Alberta by 2021
    10. Kenny opts out of dairy supply management. Quebec takes Alberta to court. Kenny uses not withstanding clause
    11. Turdeau buys a new government jet for prime ministerial travel

    1. Joe, I agree on 1,2,3, and 4, but I wonder if people are putting too much faith in Kenny. The guy was a part of the same Canadian political system as Scheer,Harper,Trudeau, Mulroney,Chretien,Bernier,and etc. ad nauseum. I doubt he is the rebel people fantasize. 10 and 11, hope you’re right on those, 11 almost certain.
      Kenny might very well adopt a tough attitude with Ottawa, but they do hold all the high cards including a red coated standing army on the Prairies, ready to do Ottawa’s bidding. Best idea might be to approach the USA re building a pipeline through their territory.
      Trudeau should lose the election, but the CPC has elected the most unexciting PM candidate ever, making Bob Stanfield look like a Sean Connery (as James Bond). Too many conservatives are thinking this is 1958,and the old methods won’t work any more.
      No one has ventured into the Gun Grab so far, I believe they will bring it in asap when the House resumes, total ban on handguns, NO compensation. Probably include any semi-auto in that legislation,including the forty year old Cooey .22 so many of us have in the gun safe with a trigger lock and Rottweiler on duty to keep Canada safe.

        Kenney knows how to get elected. IMHO most Canadians are centrists, not too right, not to left. As the premier of Alberta he’ll be a little more “radical”. If he isn’t Alberta will self destruct.

        The USA does not want more pipelines for Alberta oil. Witness Keystone XL. As I’ve said here before, it won’t get built. Who is profiting from the low price of Alberta oil? Americans. Why would they expand pipeline capacity for Canada? it will cost Americans money.

    3. If Sparkle Socks wins, Scheer is gone the next day and the party will beg Doug Ford to take over.

    leaderboard. That one is certainly not hard to predict.
    6. Leftists will continue with outrage, anger, protests and derangement and will continue their
    search for a cause in 2019. Another one that is easy to see coming.
    7. So-called news organizations will be even more outrageous in their reporting in a failing attempt
    to stay relevant.
    8. The EU is toast … finally.
    9. Mueller will release a report but I’ll be very surprised if much comes of it. Trump will never be
    fully exhonorated, the Clintons may get a small slap on the wrist and Obama will receive a
    sternly worded letter. There will be lots of noise about the time and millions of dollars spent
    on the probe and the whole thing will fall out of the news cycle in a week.

  29. The people in small-town south-central Iowa will continue to be friendly, courteous, and kind (to quote from the Boy Scout pledge); the weather will continue to be too hot, too cold, or too windy, depending on the day.

    Small Dead Animals will continue to be my favorite place to hang out on the web.

    I shall continue my quest for faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, and more money.

    Universities will continue their descent into madness.

    Politicians from the Democratic party will continue their contest to see who can be the most reprehensible.

    2. No recession in the US (as a result of 1).
    3. Tariffs on aluminum and steel on Canada into the US are dropped (Trudeau claims victory but DJT is just clearing his plate for 2020).
    4. Kenny wins majority, starts working on getting those pipelines going (this is more hope than prediction).
    5. Hillary declines to run. Beto O-rourke emerges as the front runner with Liz Warren as his VP, setting up a 2020 socialism vs Trump epic battle.
    6. Trudeau wins minority election, continues with climate change madness, looks to bale Lib Party into a UN role.
    7. Ford Nation continues to chip away at deficit, makes meaningful progress by end of 2019.
    8. There are no super-volcano eruptions.
    9. Arctic sea ice extent is “tenth lowest” since records began. Climate change interest declines further.
    10. Something happens to Macron and he steps down as weasel of France.

    1. Trudeau wins another election majority,
    2. Jason Kenney (SDA’ers, note the spelling of his name), wins in a landslide,
    3. the leaders of the Conservatives and NDP resign,
    4. the ultra-left-wing Supreme Court approves of Justin Trudeau’s Carbon Tax,
    5. No pipelines started, deteriorating economy in Alberta, Saskatchewan,
    6. Canada enters a recession,
    7. The corporate media/establishment elites make gains against Trump,
    8. A trade agreement with China/US signed, but world economy slows, stock markets fall,
    9. Brexit fails, with the No Brext side wining a second vote,
    10. But, the EU is weakened by greater dissent elsewhere in Europe.

  34. 1) The Democrat House impeaches President Trump, but the Republican Senate declines to convict. The political circus continues.

    2) There is a global stock market bear market. It has been a long time since the 2007-08 drop, and a big decline is overdue.

    3) The Yellowstone eruption does not happen.

    Our government will continue to believe that free markets have no application in the real world.
    Our government will continue to believe that by not building pipelines the oil will stay in the ground, failing to notice that up to 2 120 car trains are loaded at Hardisty Alberta every day destined for use in every corner of North America.
    Our government will continue to believe climate change is real and continue to waste inordinate amounts of tax money building useless bird choppers and such.
    Our government and the voters will continue to believe that you can spend your way to prosperity.
    Justine Trudeau will say or do something stupid. The Canadian media will ignore it.

    1. I predict that the media won’t ignore anything stupid that he does or says, but will repackage it as divine actions or pronouncements. It will also continue portraying him as incapable of doing anything wrong.

    8. The silly one will try to bail himself out with guaranteed annual income, gender politics and save our climate.

    But, most of all, the Liberals will spin, obfuscate, misrepresent and if necessary, lie through their teeth, just as they did in 2015, and the only question is will enough Canadians bite on the hook again and vote for nice hair no brains underneath?

    2019 will be the year of 50:50. It will decide the ultimate future of Canada and will presage a period of international peace or reinvigorate progressives and their malignant themes of taxation, inflation and war, driven by their lust for political power.
