  1. They better be glad it only took the coast guard 11 hours to get there……that they had ice thick enough to stand on…and didn’t run into any bears

    1. In another “warmest”year ever no less ! Of course in Saskathewan we had full on winter until the end of April and what seems like one of the shortest summers I can recall.

  2. Global Warming means your “climate” will be:
    a) colder
    b) warmer
    c) drier
    d) wetter
    e) all of the above.
Its the all purpose theory of everything. Of course if you pay a carbon tax, then the climate will not change.

    1. Exactly. No matter what happens, it’ll be attributed to “climate change”.

Interestingly, on last night’s The John Batchelor Show, he had the following item about the American EPA:

      Part 1: https://audioboom.com/posts/6992157.mp3
      Part 2: https://audioboom.com/posts/6992158.mp3

Similar arguments were made in favour of increasing the prices of microwave ovens. Make them more expensive and people won’t use them as much, if at all. The thing is, the manufacturers simply closed the domestic factories and moved them to places where such idiotic regulations weren’t in effect and labour was cheaper. The ovens produced over there were shipped to the U. S. and the public bought them for about the same price, if not less, than before.

So what did a government-mandated price increase solve?

  3. The Canadian government should send a full cost invoice for the rescue. Perhaps then, I could not care less how many fools founder on the ice.

  4. The last GPS waypoint shows elevation: 62.34 ft.
Shouldn’t there be a minus sign in front of that?

  5. I read a book about the history of arctic exploration a while back and one of the things that struck me was how variable ice conditions were year to year. Even 200 years ago sailors would run into problems because one year they could sail to a certain place, and the next year they went back they would get stuck in pack ice hundreds of miles farther south. It has always been like this.

    1. I’ve read they eventually realized that whalers were the most skilled sailors to navigate ice packs and had been doing it for decades before many far reaches were “explored” officially. A position of Ice Master was created, usually a whaler.

  6. For those interested, there’s a really neat interactive website that tracks Arctic and Antarctic sea ice extent daily.

    http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/charctic-interactive-sea-ice-graph/

In 2009 Al Gore predicted that the Arctic would be ice free in five to seven years. Well, nine years have passed since. We are now nearing the annual low point in Arctic sea ice. As of yesterday, the Arctic sea ice extent was 4.992 million square kilometers. This is more ice than there was in 2007 and 34% more for the same date than in the satellite era low in 2012.

Polar bear population is up from about 5,000 to 30,000 in the last few decades. A great unreported success story!

    1. Yes…today’s sea ice extent is also well below both the interquartile and interdecile range. This is consistent with the AGW hypothesis. Gore’s timeframe was wrong but not the final destination.

      1. If course Gore is wrong. He is a snakeoil salesman. I really enjoy looking at those old photographs of the USS Skate sitting in open water at the North Pole on 17 March 1959….and the HMS Superb, USS Billfish and USS Sea Devil in May, 1987.

  7. I look forward to their photo blogging of their journey and sinking … and their recanting of ALL the global warmist nonsense they’ve ever spouted.

    Waiting …
    waiting …

for Sanity, and SCIENCE to return to the dominant media

  8. They ignored warnings that it was dangerous and the two decided against the warnings to try. I hope they get sent the bill for the so called rescue.

  9. Why rescue them at all? We really don’t want these people reproducing do we?

Interestingly, the Canadian government commissioned an ice-reconnaissance airplane in 1985. It was delivered in 1986 and spends every summer in the high arctic mapping ice. Why do none of these idiots ask for an ice map?

    1. We are doing a disservice to the planet every time we interfere with Darwin’s Laws. It’s a sink or swim world, kiddies

    2. The only reason there are regular passages of the Northwest Passage are satellite and aircraft reconnaissance. I suspect if Lief Erickson had daily satellite images he could have found his way to China. The clear passages keep changing but are usually there. Franklin would have had a better chance of making it through had he sailed east of King William Island instead of west of it.

  10. Any bets that if a matter like this is brought up in Question Period that PM Longstockings is going to blame it all on Harper?

  11. So…. I don’t ‘get’ it. Two fools with some extra cash just sitting in the bank decided to dare the elements in a small sail boat in order to be added to the list of dare devil adventurers who passed through the “Northwest Passage” in August. Predictably, they sail into heavy arctic sea ice. Boat is crushed by sea ice and they scramble onto an iceberg and are later rescued. So…. they were wealthy and foolish (but not foolish enough to eat Tide Pods) and wanted to brag. That’s the story. The end?

But no. Everyone here and on WUWT are making it about global warming (a sad comedown for WUWT). Don’t get it.

P.S. If you want to see what’s happening with Arctic (and Antarctic) sea ice, there is no better site than this:

    http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/charctic-interactive-sea-ice-graph/

Site has many features. The trend (may be part of a cycle or maybe not) is clear. Facts is facts.

    1. “Everyone here and on WUWT are making it about global warming”

……….”The Anahita, like about a dozen other yachts, was on its way east-west through the Northwest Passage. This summer, however, the ice in the Arctic is persistent. Unlike in previous years, so far there has not been a clear path.”
“That’s exactly what the Canadian authorities have urged all crews in recent days. It is not foreseeable that the passage would open at all this year. On the contrary, the current ice situation for yachts is dangerous.”

      …your call….I say it is

    2. The nsidc has been SATELLITE measuring sea ice extent … since 1979. Yet every one of their charts is used by the global Warmists to claim arctic sea ice collapse due to Climate Change. Since 1979. To 2018. Climate change. A short trend line is NOT proof of anything. Wake me up when we’ve measured 1-200 years of “trends”

I’m not the one screaming “Global Warming” in the face of inconclusive evidence. No, that would be the Global Warming motivated “Rich” people sailing the arctic waters in search of social media clicks.

  12. NEWS FLASH GREENPEACE RESEARCH SHIP BECOMES TRAPPED IN THE ICE FORCED TO DITCH THEIR PLASTIC POLAR BEAR

  13. If you’re interested in the subject of arctic sea ice extent, the Japanese and Russian research makes for good reading. Essentially, it boils down to this: average temperatures at wherever you choose really have b)##er all to do with arctic sea ice extent in any given year. The major determinant of sea ice extent particularly during the summer has to do with the wind patterns. The popular perception is that during the winter the arctic sea freezes from the north pole outward until the growing super freezie hits land at various locations and then thickens. During the summer the ice melts from south to north until it leaves the north pole ice free during one of Al Gore’s hallucinatory years and the arctic sea is ice free. This perception is complete rubbish. The arctic waters freeze first around the land and other floating ice chunks; these are stirred by the big arctic sea blender; the ice accumulates in the centre or wherever the wind patterns blow it (thus the ice heaves described by explorers) and then in the summer the arctic sea wind blender either keeps the ice relatively confined producing a “big” arctic sea ice extent or the wind blender spits it out of the arctic basin (mainly through the Fram Straight) thereby sinking ships called “Titanic” and producing a relatively lower arctic sea ice extent.
This reality unfortunately fails to reinforce global warming memes so it’s not widely discussed.

  14. Maybe the owners of the boat could send Al Gore a bill for its replacement. After all he’s been at the forfront telling us that the poles are melting.

  15. Am I a bad person for laughing at this?

I forget who exactly, but one of the early arctic explorers said “If you are having adventures, you are doing it wrong”. Like this, for example.

  16. whataya bet 500 years from now sumbuddy gonna dredge up the wreck and claim it ‘proof’ the arctic was clear of ice at this time.
