Your premise is entirely specious. An ideological concept of “gender vs sex” has been formulated and advanced to which you clearly subscribe. There are no scientific/biological facts involved (you gave the game away by admitting yourself that “[gender] is a lot more subjective”).
The word “gender” really began to assume the meaning of “biological sex” in the 20th Century as “sex” itself took on more erotic connotations; because “sex” could no longer be used in polite society to mean simply male or female without alluding to the naughty old sex act, thus “gender” got the job as a euphemistic synonym.
Now of course, it is being touted by certain ideological groups (which clearly include you) as a means to justify the advancement of a number of dubious policies and ideas – as exemplified by this BC schools story.
It’s not specious to observe and respect the definition of words, even if they evolved back in the 19th century (most of our language has changed since then too).
You can’t actually change a person’s sex. Except for very rare cases you are born either XX or XY and this cannot be changed by surgery or hormones. All those treatments do is prevent secondary sex characteristics or surgically alter them.
Beyond XX and XY, sex is determined by gametes, which can also not be changed. Trans-women don’t produce eggs, trans-men don’t produce sperm.
Gametes: In species that produce two morphologically distinct types of gametes, and in which each individual produces only one type, a female is any individual that produces the larger type of gamete—called an ovum (or egg)—and a male produces the smaller tadpole-like type—called a sperm. In short a gamete is an egg (female gamete) or a sperm (male gamete).
XX & XY are just a genotype. Male or female is a matter of phenotype, which to be fair you somewhat address in your comment about gamete production. But you know it is not always so black and white-people can be sterilized to lose their gamete-producing ability. They don’t lose their M or F classification then. Besides, do you think we are that far off from having trans folk who can produce the gametes they want? Or for that matter can change their DNA? CRISPR CAS will make it happen.
I think you’re straying pretty far into science fiction. The ability to change your biological sex via genetic manipulation would likely be possible in only the early fetal development stage, but that would be parental choice. To change a full term, functional XX woman into an a functional XY man seems unlikely. Would the female reproductive system and genitals disappear and would functional male genitals and reproductive system develop? Or do I misunderstand your argument? In addition, biological sex differences aren’t restricted to the reproductive system. The differences extend to the brain, for instance. Little girls, in general, are different from little boys but there is overlap, of course.
I’ve heard pretty much all of the ” X exception from the norm invalidates biological sex” but it’s not a convincing argument, IMO. For instance, sometimes humans are born with only one leg or more than two. Occasionally diseases and accidents result in the amputation of a leg. Do those exceptions invalidate the evidence/observation that humans are bipedal?
Nature has a way of dealing with spontaneous mutations. If they prove valuable, it leads to evolution. If they are worthless … into the rubbish bin of biology. For example … if being “white” were so advantageous … we’d all be Albinos, eh hUn?

A few points
1. The eventual lawsuits brought by adults who were convinced as non-consenting school children that they were trans (not simply tomboys or gay) and had life altering surgery and therapies resulting in sterility, mental health issues, etc. will make the indian residential school reparations look like pocket change. We taxpayers should demand that we are not stuck paying for the settlements, before it’s too late.
2. This isn’t education them about gender identity/expression when they’re this young, it’s deliberately manipulating the gullible. I once convinced a friend’s young son who had never seen a canister style vacuum that the contraption was an alien spaceship. His imagination took that idea and ran with it into a fantastical make-believe story. Talking about gender theory at the elementary school level isn’t different at all.
3. If I were an entrepreneur I would market a chain of charter schools guaranteeing an ideology-free , academic focussed education that had lesson plans on-line for parents to view and comment on to keep the schools honest. Bullying would result in immediate expulsion.
4. I think a strong parental Bill of Rights needs to be passed and should include a limited right to sue education departments.
5. If this kind of thing continues, manipulation of children and criminalizing of pronouns, then tolerance for alternative lifestyles will be negatively affected. All the work done by gays, libertarians and liberals over the last few decades will come crashing down.

I’m thankful I grew up when it was OK to be a “tomboy” without being collared for gender reassignment education or whatever the terminology is.
I raised my daughter to be a “tomboy”, playing several competitive-level sports concluding as captain of her Community college soccer team. I also raised her to be ALL GIRL. She is a delightful mix of both … if anyone (herself included) made any attempt to fiddle with her hormones or sexual apparatus … there would be HELL to pay from me!

Interesting that, on one hand, “health authorities” run expensive, highly publicized “anti-suicide” campaigns, with only one hand on the keyboard, and with their other hand, flick the switch, open the drip-tap, or alter the “nutrient and hydration”regime on a fairly grand scale. That is on top of the broad-scale slaughter and maiming resulting from “medical misadventure”.
There are many people that share the same opinions on things and I would bet that individually they could not enact the changes that they feel are needed in society at this moment. But they do join groups that try to influence the views of those in more powerful positions (just like their enemies do to them). Many probably have the opinion that there are degenerate freaks in this world that are always at war with the basic norms and values that hold a civilization together. These norms are already known to everyone but these demons are always trying to inject their chaos into our normality. Our normality is what makes civilizations thrive and grow, these snakes that twist everything that is good as evil and everything that is evil as good must be treated like the demons they are.
Many feel that we all know the kind of tricks and deviancy that the enemies of a stable functioning society push at us constantly, after all, we see the articles complaining about them all the time. It will keep happening as long as society keeps getting weaker and weaker. Well I would imagine that there are many people that are just waiting to pounce on the opportunity to right the wayward wrongs that our fellow weak citizens have been allowing for too long. Those people must feel like that would be a glorious thing to have happen.
I went back and read all the tweets in the original link. A couple of them commented on the real problem concerning this subject. A couple of posters here also touched on it.
The real problem is the trans advocates and their allies are the ones who are really practicing strict sexual stereotypes. Dolls are female, toy cars and guns are male. Pink, heck all pastel, are female. Art is female. Sports are male. And so on. And so they think of girls who like some “male” things as not entirely female, and boys who like some “female” things as not entirely male. This is the utter nonsense that they are teaching the children, and why the latter can be easily led to believe they are not all one or the other, as witness where they put themselves on the spectrum.
They are in fact promoting the stereotypes that exactly tortured sensitive boys and active girls lo those many years ago. Cultural sensitivity then meant overthrowing those stereotypes, and show sensitive boys were still boys and active girls (tomboys) were still girls. Does anyone remember the play, and later movie, “Tea and Sympathy”? The wife of the headmaster of the residence school finally seduced the sensitive boy to convince him he really did like women. It was a daring movie at the time, but would be castigated now for implying gay is abnormal. I recognize that a certain small portion of people will grow up and find they prefer members of the same sex sexually, but the overwhelming majority will not. It is much of a lesser sin to point out the FACT that gay is really abnormal, as in two sigma outside the normal spectrum, than to try to push every single child who show any tendency to violate the stereotype into being gay or trans. That indeed will deny each normal person of the full spectrum of human emotions. You can like both sports and the fine arts, whether you are a man or woman. You can break down and cry and not be less of a man, or be stoic in the face of misfortune and not be less of a woman. There are differences of course, for example as in ways a man and a woman express their love and concern for each other.
