TNC Exclusive: Documents reveal feds considered carbon tax-like rule for farm fertilizers
The federal Liberal government has considered forcing a carbon tax-like “regulatory backstop” onto farmers should voluntary agreements to reduce fertilizer emissions not meet Ottawa’s arbitrary standards – and it could see crop production across the country drastically decline.
The Liberals have been pulling out all the stops in recent months as part of their ongoing efforts to reduce emissions in the name of fighting climate change. Carbon taxes, plastic bag bans and electric vehicle sales rules are just some of their initiatives, but they’ve also set their sights on emissions from fertilizer use by farmers.
The feds maintain that fertilizer targets will remain voluntary and be based on individually-crafted agreements with farmers and industry leaders. However, a Jul. 16, 2021, discussion paper acquired by True North from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada via an access to information request shows the government floating a federal backstop as a “policy option” should all else fail.
“A number of policy measures could be put forward for consideration beyond just a ‘voluntary agreement’,” wrote Agriculture Canada officials. “A suite of policy approaches will be necessary, and consideration to be given to a regulatory backstop should voluntary approaches not be successful.”
True North received a document dump from the federal government that covered the inception of the program in 2020 through 2021. Agriculture Canada officials are currently processing another request pertaining to the program’s developments in 2022.
Ignore the feds…..any provincial governments that allows the Ottawa fascists to screw up energy or food security needs to be removed. There is no negotiation. End of story.

I don’t think Canada will ever elect a truly conservative government again, recent and projected immigration levels being a significant contributing factor. The ballot box isn’t the only way to influence public policy. Organized resistance can achieve the same ends and do so non-violently.
Stevo, I am not sure canada ever had what could be considered a “conservative” government. Liberal lite and not one thing ever changed/improved or was reversed under a “conservative” government. The same problems existed after their terms as before their terms in office. I am sure someone will come up with some obscure notation but hey, the debt ball never stopped rolling, and law after law compounded upon law after law, Tax after tax and now compounded with taxes on tax. Hate to say it but I fully expect you to be disappointed. I wish it weren’t so but I fear it is. Remember we are all in it together? The mean it literally.
He could change the tune by simply stating that Canada has the second largest land mass in the world, is a northern country and has a small population and a huge boreal forest. We should be cheering from the roof tops that a first world economy is only producing less the 2% of green house gas emissions so from this day forward any taxes, programs, bureaucracy spending on climate change will cease. China adds our emissions every 8 months. We will not destroy our economy or our people’s way of life over what is essentially nonsense. We will develop our oil and gas reserves to the fullest capacity to provide clan energy to the world so they can reduce their emissions. We will maximize our agricultural sector to help feed the world.
That’s what I want to see.

Despite many, many efforts to get the legacy media to ask Rachel Notley her Provincial NDP’s position on farmer’s use of fertilizer, I’ve hit a wall of silence. It almost seems consirital…
Yeah, so what. There’s a paper. It was obvious from the start that this was the outcome. No farmer is voluntarily going to cut his expenses by 20% to reduce his revenue by 50%. A high school level of understanding of economics would allow one to realize that fertilizer consumption will only decrease when it is unprofitable or impossible to use. That is how a free market works. There are plenty of people in the government with a high school level understanding of economics who also would like to get rid of free markets, so it was clear from the start that the only way the target could be achieved would be a ban on fertilizer over that amount in the region (difficult to enforce and costly), a permit system where farmers are only allowed to buy a certain amount of fertilizer (less difficult and costly to enforce), or a tax on fertilizer (easy to enforce and sucking hundreds of millions, if not billions out of the farmers bottom line into government coffers). So, gosh they had a plan to to achieve their climate goals by focusing punishing taxes on a group that doesn’t vote Liberal if they didn’t voluntarily do what the Liberals want, because there was no reason for farmers to do so voluntarily.
I’m not sure that the climate goals are even a consideration, asserting increased control, more taxes and punishing a targeted group that votes wrong is all the incentive that is required, the climate thing is just the pretext. This is likely true with all climate action, given how little effect their policies will have. It’s always been about accreting wealth and control, if there is at the end of the day some climate benefit (however one defines it) that is an unexpected bonus.
By the way, there are only two outcomes that can happen in the future.
1. We are not meeting our objectives so we must raise the tax
or
2. we have met our objective, but we must do more to reduce emissions so we are lowering the limit and must raise the tax
