    The national wire service (Canadian Press, presumably) has suddenly started calling Canadians ‘settler Canadians’ without any explanation of why, or when the term will be used in future to describe Canadians who are not First Nations, Inuit or Metis.

    1. I suppose we’re supposed to feel grateful that they don’t refer to us as “invader Canadians”. On the other hand, does that include naturalized Canadians like me?

          2. This is to Stevie’s post above. My late mom was born in Valencia, Spain, and was somewhat of a darker-skinned European. Since Valencia was, long ago, an Arab-conrolled city (by the Moors), my mom would relate to us a running joke in southeast Spain — that “all of us” in that part of Spain were part Arab.         The best idea we brought from Scotland was universal education from their Presbyterian religion. My 1799 born immigrant 2nd great grandfather could read and write. Generations of Canadians of all backgrounds have been educated well in our public school systems, which developed before Confederation via local school councils, initially.

        If one actually reads old documents from “the province of Quebec”, later “Upper Canada”, there was significant collaborations with Indians of the the day, as they liked our food and our stuff and wanted to deal/trade and we liked their animal fur clothes for winter.

  17. I got this minor little bit of info from my stockbroker’s discussion about Nutrien, the huge potash maker and distributor based out of Winnipeg (I believe). Yesterday after the bell Nutrien guided its profits and production higher, given that the West Is about boycott all Belarusian products. Belarus is a big producer and exporter of potash and other soil nutrients.

    The brokerage firm also said that Lithuania runs the only port available for BPC (the Belarus state-owned potash company) to export its potash. And the port is set to join in the boycott, and prevent any BPC fertilizer from leaving Belarus:

    OK, big deal, people may ask. People owning Nutrien shares will be making a killing, since Nutrien has announced it will be making up part of the BHC shortfall. I own Nutrien shares, and I will be buying more this morning. But the big deal is how Vladimir Putin will respond to the port closure. He is a bully, and one wonders if he would invade Lithuania. He probably could invade all three Baltic countries in a bloodless takeover. Probably not, but the frontline EU states facing Russia are a tinderbox.

    I am looking at a black swan event like the above this summer.

    1. I’m sure the production will simply change to a Russian port. If you are Poland or Lithuania you might want to think twice about trying to isolate Kaliningrad from Russia.

    2. Nutrien was formed when Agrium (originally Cominco) and the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan amalgamated a few years ago.

    3. Nutrien is based in Saskatoon.
      There are NATO troops, including Canadians, posted to the Baltic countries as a “shield” against Russian aggression. These troops are not armed enough to repel, or even significantly slow down, a Russian invasion. They are there simply to make Putin think twice, and to make any invasion politically toxic in Russia.
      Don’t trade too much Nutrien stock based on this news only. I’m sure Russia will provide a nice rail link from Belarus to tidewater at St Petersburg or Rostov.

    1. I don’t know who this Dr. Bhardwaj is, but when one person is asked to advise on something like that, they will always be ultra cautious. It’s emotional — not rational. They are fearful of making a mistake. Moreover, because of how the press has handled this issue, many prople do not see the downside of masks — and there are many. I particularly object to the dehumanization which takes a toll on our sense of social connection, but there are many physical problems which have been noted as well. Many people, including kids, get headaches when they have to wear the mark for extended periods. Thst can’t be healthy.

      1. Dr. Bhardwaj is a joke. He regularly speaks on the local CBC radio station here in Kelowna, providing “expert” advice that is always in keeping with the narrative du jour.
        Same with that other CBC shill doctor Brian Goldstein.
