Conrad bought the Financial Post and used it as an important part of creating the daily National Post in 1998. It was a true conservative paper for the years that he owned it and by conservative I mean fiscally conservative and ever suspicious of Big Government.
In my view, it helped change the views of many voters and made a major contribution to the election successes of Stephen Harper.

About an hour ago on this day 77 years ago 19 Lancasters of RAF’s 617 Squadron set off from RAF Scampton. On board were 133 hand picked expert crewmembers, a disproportionately large number (31) of whom were Canadian. Of the 133, 53 died on the raid and only 48 survived the war. The Canadians seem to have come from all across Canada many from towns I (as a Brit) have never heard of such as Milo Alberta and Nanaimo BC. Most were what would now be considered astonishingly young- Sgt Frederick Sutherland, a front gunner,from Peace River Alberta was less than three months past his twentieth birthday – he had done 25 missions before this raid. He survived but his aircraft was shot down on an ill-fated raid to Dortmund Ems in September. He bailed out and with help from the resistance made his way from Holland to Spain and then back to the UK. He survived the war.
