That’s nothing new. Take a look at who universities are hiring for their faculties and where those new professors come from.
I know of someone who got her tenure-track position that way about a dozen years ago. She came to Canada as a foreign student, finished her studies, and, since her employer wanted to hire more women and “visible minorities”, she was almost guaranteed to get the job. In her case, though, those conditions wouldn’t have been necessary as she was quite talented as a researcher.

Human nature is such that … if one is GIVEN something for nothing, such as these skewed hiring-advantages (or affirmative-action in any form) … it devalues the individual. And it also (generally) produces a weaker worker, a crippled worker. And why do I get the feeling in my gut that the budget for this sponsorship program will be run strictly out of the PMO and the FM will have no authority to oversee this discretionary spending and that the “investments” will be decided based on the information provided to the PM from the LPC organizer that visits his office once a week to decide which ridings need the funds directed to the “businesses”. There will also be the odd coincidence that the funding will be sent out and a donation will be given to the Trudeau Foundation on the same day from the owners of the businesses in receipt of the sponsorship funding. And when the AG gets suspicious and starts asking questions, it will be found that the contracts where for services of little to no value or just used to funnel government funding to the LPC.

Pretty soon they’ll have to hire Canadian-accented peopleskind to act as interpreters between the accented people. The government will have to create more jobs and give us courses in deciphering the accents. I spent one hour today doing just exactly that, this morning. What fun. Funny thing though, my English was awful! Heh, heh, ya shudda heard me! All present tense, no jokes! Not me at all. I didn’t recognize myself. Would I do this as a business? Nope. Too much red tape.
I worked for the Feds when affirmative action came in. We hired the ovary group en mass. They were brought in fresh out of uni with no experience and above their grade. Didn’t work out so good for the people already there and the medical leave for stress skyrocketed. I expect the same.
This is the LAST thing small business owners need – a program that mandates they must hire unqualified foreigners and train them up. Most small businesses don’t have the resources to do much training as they haven’t any spare employees to do that. And small businesses can’t afford to antagonize their customers by having incompetents working there – that’s a luxury which can only be afforded by larger companies such as the banks and the government.
In the provincial facility where I work, much of the cafeteria meat is halal, in order to cater to the many, many Mohammadans “working” there who always bring their own halal lunch.
That said, there are a number of us who see our imminent replacement and can’t say too much lest we hasten our departures. We all want to know where we can go for sanctuary.
