  1. Watch the car sections of major papers and blogs in the next while. More and more talk about drivers and passengers freezing during winter months in EVs. I’m well aware that we have problems with gasoline and diesel autos in the winter months as well. As long as you have gas in the tank however, you can stay warm. With an EV , seat warmers, heaters, defrosters etc, reduce the mileage and increase charge times. If and when you can find a charging station.
    https://www.fleetcarma.com/extend-electric-vehicle-range-winter/
    There are many more articles.

  2. I love this piece of advice on how to stay warm in an EV. From the article I’ve just posted.
”Layered clothing. The easiest way to conserve battery power is using little to no heat. Always dress in layers when heading out in winter so you can stay warm whether or not the climate control system helps. A scarf, hat and driving gloves complete winter attire in an EV.”
Gee, thanks Elan, I never thought of that!!

  3. This is not a Readers Tip, but I wanted to share this with the western posters. From research I have done, I know how many Saskatchewan young men served in the forces in WWI and WWII. The Daily Mail had a story about the Spitfire fighter yesterday and so I wrote up a brief comment about a pilot from Humboldt who was a 2nd cousin of mine and a 3rd of my husband that we never met. I knew about his death from his older brother, who went in with the Regina Rifles on D-Day, and found the whole story in his service record which I was able to access on Ancestry. This is a brief account of his experience June 7/44:
“Speaking of Spitfires, my Saskatchewan cousin was first a bomber pilot in the Mediterranean, then transferred to fighter command. He was assigned to 602 Sqdn. On the second patrol to France on June 7, 1944, his Spitfire engine cut out and he had to “belly land”, fortunately within Allied lines. Voices called out to him (as bullets flew around from both sides), “get down, get down; crawl over here”. They were Americans. Since it was a bit hectic, it was impossible to return him to England for a week. Sadly, on July 7th, he was hit by flak on an armed reconnaissance south of Caen. In 1945, a French farmer was able to show the British the crash site in a grove of trees; the farmer had buried his body to prevent the Germans from finding him. The only identification found was the name he had printed in indelible ink on the underside of his shirt collar: L. KIDD. He was 21 years of age.”

  4. “Actually, electric cars do not waste the type of energy gas-powered cars do (as heat), so greater efficiency is the source of the problem.”
Ponder that statement for awhile just an example of the mindset that champions electric cars in Canadian winter, instead of reliable, safe and warm petroleum fueled vehicles. Notice no mention is made of defrosting capabilities, not important I guess. The lack of adequate heaters is presented as a positive.

The US could take a lesson from Canada’s past… Some NS French Acadian’s refused to pledge allegiance to the British Crown (after France was defeated)…They were deported to Louisiana and became known as Cajun….

  7. Let’s not forget what the primary market for those vehicles is, namely the larger cities in California. When was the last time that, say, Los Angeles had snowdrifts in the street?
Since it doesn’t snow in those locations, why should they worry about interior heaters?
I’m reminded of my first landlady when I was a grad student at UBC. She was a leftover California hippy and she didn’t understand what I meant when I said that since I would be living in the Vancouver area, I wouldn’t have to plug in my car in the winter.
I’m sure that if I’d told her that in Alberta, we all drove electric vehicles but that we all needed really long extension cords, she would have believed me.

  8. As I heard it, some 50 years ago, the Acadians were given a choice. They could either assimilate and adopt British ways or they could be transported to a location of their choice. Many opted for Louisiana because it was the largest free French region in North America at the time.
In recent years, however, I’ve heard that story revised to make it into “ethnic cleansing” by the British.

  9. Oh my … Fleetcarma … PR shilling for electric vehicles is one thing … but dishonesty, and deception, are quite another. Just because a website is beautifully composed, slick “looking” and articulated into short attention span visually digestible blocks with kewl graphics and pictures … doesn’t mean that it is any more legitimate than a 19th century traveling medicine show extolling the virtues of their “miracle elixir”. There are so many half truths, and implied truths, and simple lies in this article that I want to puke. Virtually nothing TRUE and HONEST is contained in this desperate PR piece.
For example … the article proudly states that Norway (a Euro cold climate) has … “the fastest adoption rate” of electric cars of any other country in the world. It is implied that Norwegians actually DRIVE their ev’s In the wintertime. Do they? Or do they treat their ev’s like a “convertible” … like a novelty to be driven in agreeable weather?
As it turns out … 85% of Norwegian EV-owners have 2-cars, and that their OTHER car is an ICE auto. And that they only drive their EV’s for short distance trips. And the Fleetcarma article FAILS to mention the massive government subsidies given to EV purchases … including universal FREE PARKING! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plug-in_electric_vehicles_in_Norway … pro hint: government subsidies are being phased out in 2018 … so we’ll be sure to check the stats in the next couple years.
And the WORST omission of this PR crap of an article …
The global average is $5.52 per gallon of gas. Norway is the distant outlier for countries with the most expensive price per gallon of gas: $10.76 per gallon,
Gee … I wonder if any of THAT has something to do the leading adoption “rate” of EV’s in Norway. OMISSION of TRUTH is still LYING! Lies of OMISSION are still LIES.

  10. My point for posting the Cajun deportation was that because they refused to live in peace under British law.. The other people in NS wanted them gone, and they went… That is similar to the NFL players pissing on the Flag & disrespecting the National Anthem… They are Americans that can’t and shouldn’t be deported, but they can be fired and the football Fan base have a right to demand that the owners respect America…I see major advertisers are buying into College games..better football
BTW I think the Arcadian’s may have been a French Cult…They where rejected by the Louisiana French and didn’t mix..they settled in the Swamp lands.. hear the banjo’s playing!
The grievance scholars have read Hollywood NOVELS that are not based on fact… the British & New England settlers had been fighting the French & their Indians allies raiding settlements.. Ethnic cleansing was not practiced in those times….They would have just killed the Acadians if they thought they were guilty…It was a simpler time with simple solutions.

  11. Hey, you’re in good company, Trudeau admire authoritarians as well…ironically, the anthem is called “March of the Volunteers” lol
    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-lawmaking-hongkong/china-extends-national-anthem-disrespect-law-to-hong-kong-idUSKBN1D40CH
    BEIJING (Reuters) –
In the past few years, some Hong Kong football fans have booed the national anthem during World Cup qualifiers and other matches, mirroring protests in the United States where football players knelt during the national anthem, a practice denounced by U.S. President Donald Trump.
China passed a new law in September mandating up to 15 days in police detention for those who mock the “March of the Volunteers” national anthem, a law that also covers the Chinese territories of Hong Kong and Macau but was not immediately given a legal basis for enforcement there.

He was a big opponent of Energy East Pipeline, even if that was part of the reason for his defeat there is some hope for sanity to break out.

  14. How many cars in California don’t have air conditioning? It likely takes as much battery power to run an auto AC unit as it does to run a heater and if you want to drive somewhere in an EV, there won’t be much battery life available to run an AC unit.

“The Liberal Government in Ottawa was in full damage control mode Monday following revelations that that the chief fundraiser for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is linked to an offshore tax shelter in the Cayman Islands.
Stephen Bronfman, an heir to the Seagram liquor fortune and a close personal friend of Prime Minister Trudeau, served as Revenue Chair of the Liberal Party during the 2015 federal election campaign. Mr. Bronfman had raised as much as $250,000 in a single day for the Prime Minister’s election campaign.
Over the weekend, an investigation by the CBC, Radio-Canada and the Toronto Star revealed that Mr. Bronfman and his Montreal-based investment company, Claridge Inc., are linked to a U.S. $60 million offshore trust in the Cayman Islands that may have cost Canadians millions in unpaid taxes.”

  27. Another thought on Climate Barbie: In one report, (Globe and Mail). “The minister said she has faced sexist comments since she entered politics.” Someone should point out that she also has had advantages bestowed on her by virtue of her sex. Mr. Trudeau has determined that something like 50% of his Cabinet will be women . . . regardless of the actual percentages of women elected. Perhaps some of the cynical remarks would be toned down if women were put in positions based on actual qualifications and fair competition. Clearly these things did not happen with some of Trudeau’s appointees — (McKenna being one; Monsef is another (even worse) example.) I also find that when women complain about rude treatment they come across as thin skinned and whiny. This is definitely the case with McKenna.
“Come on Polly, buck up, act like a man” — a quote few will recognize, but it was issued by Martha Black’s brother as she struggled to get over the Chilkoot pass. I believe that Black was the second woman in Parliament. She never made an issue of her sex and never complained about how she was treated by Parliament or the media. Our women politicians these days are much too coddled. Such treatment undermines their impact. McKenna should take note.

  28. The kurfuffle over tax havens is justified, however there is a question arising out of Juthtins relationship with Bronfman.
Why did Bronfman accompany Juthtin on a visit to the Obama white house and what business did a head of liberal fund raising have with Obama?

  29. “Let’s not forget what the primary market for those vehicles is, namely the larger cities in California.”
Just yesterday I noticed 8 Tesla ‘Superchargers’ outside of our local Chapters book store.
I asked a retailer in the same mall who was paying for the electricity. Apparently we all are because the mall picks up the tab, passes it on to the retailer in the form of slightly higher triple net costs. They then pass it on to their retail customers.
BTW, this is 8 superchargers in a small city of approx. 90,000 people. I doubt you’d find much more than 8 Tesla’s in the city, let alone 8 needing simultaneous charging.
Also, the same mall offers preferred parking for those using EV’s, so they don’t have to walk as far as the proles.
“Free energy” for the 1%’ers. What’s not to like.
