  3. I tried googling “Google payola to professors”. I got two hits, both of them to this article.
    Which got me thinking; it’s not possible for Kate to claim that you will get zero hits when you google a specific phrase, because as soon as she does that it’s no longer true. Bertrand Russell would understand perfectly.

    What do they mean by the word ‘evil’?
    Do they really think that companies that are in business to do evil?
    If most business is inherently evil how is it possible for google to keep from becoming ‘evil’?

    Big corporations, politicians, academics/activists and the media are a tight little circle that influence (bribe, kickback, lobby, bailout, provide favorable coverage for, etc.) each other using vast amounts of money from those outside the circle, which is all of us regardless of political leaning. Stop the money and the circle collapses. Too bad there’s not a political party that would actually break them up. One that explicity defends the economic interests of the average joe (but ditch all divisive social policies) Every politician becomes more interested in becoming a member of the circle, even if they start with good intentions.

It’s not about what they can do on their own but what they can do through the coercive power of the state. If you want it to get worse, regulate it, legislate it, and then lobby for its exclusive benefit.

    Ronald Regan was an actor. Perhaps you had to be acquainted with him to understand it, but Nelson Rockefeller was the real Great Communicator of the second half of the 20th century, and his death perhaps the greatest blow the “Ant People” suffered in that period.

Perhaps if I hated my life and sat through Senate sessions, I would observe otherwise but not so far.

  20. History isn’t your strong suit, is it? Business has to abide by regulations. In return, business pays workers (who are taxed) and makes profits (that are taxed). Governments that want a strong revenue stream want strong businesses.
    When businesses are nationalized or otherwise destroyed by government then you get Venezuela. Just like you got USSR. Just like you got Zimbabwe nee Rhodesia.
    Some politicians don’t want to go full Venezuela. Why are you urging us to go full Venezuela? Oh, and if you heat your house in the winter and can still afford to buy food then stop being a hypocrite and using cheap oil.

    I bloody well want regulations and the personnel to make bloody sure they are enforced. why dont you set up a construction company that ignores all building codes so I can get a ‘Holmes’ type TV series fixing them?
    unrestrained capitalism is in fact its own worst enemy. it clobbers the level playing field setting the stage for enormous world wide monopolies. THEN watch the price of commodities, hydro, rent, interest rates etc.

    Nice absolutes. Government is the only mandated monopoly in our system. Given a choice between unrestrained capitalism and unrestrained governmental control, I’ll take the capitalism.
