With its current president, Ecuador unfortunately is poised to head the same direction. He has openly expressed his admiration for Chavez and his policies, although there are signs that the people there have seen what Chavez wrought in Venezuela and learned enough from a distance to want to avoid it. This concern cuts through many sectors of society, from businessmen, to professionals to recently graduated students. Wether that will be enough to counter a crude, simplistic and ultimately false throw-out-the-exploiters, make-thee-rich-pay message aimed at the peasant population remains to be seen. For the sake of Ecuadorians, I do hope so.
