Men are just soooo screwed…. was it poor taste? Sure but that is not a crime, or should it be…. freedom for males…..
Well spoken Christie, mere dirty thoughts are now considered the most heinous of crimes. Being offended and the outrage that springs from it should now be considered the new face of “hate crime”.
I don’t have a problem with the university’s initial response. I’ve been a student in a program leading up to membership in a licensed profession, and I know a number of licensed engineers, teachers, accountants, &c. The things you can be censured or drummed out of a licensed profession for in your private life are legion, and that’s something that was drilled into us from freshman year on. Facebook isn’t meaningfully private, no matter what the group settings were. Suspension and some mandatory professional ethics classes are about right for this, because it *is* pretty damned despicable behaviour.
That said, the collective sh!t-losing by literally thousands of people who were completely unaffected by this is embarrassing, and some mandatory being-a-grown-up lessons wouldn’t be out of place for those yahoos, either.
This is NOT news Ernst zundle was a delusional idiot and a a$$, but we deported him to germany for being a holocaust denier, where he was tried ad spent time in jail. What the F? Free speech is for every a$$ in the barn.
If you are male you are automatically guilty because of rape culture which assumes all men are rapists. However, if you are Muslim you get a free pass no matter what is done in the name of your culture.
“Free speech is for every a$$ in the barn.”
Absolutely right, GL.
When I was at school, if a bunch of lame geeks posted crap like that anywhere, THEY would have been the ‘victims’ – of merciless mocking. When did women become so frail and defenseless?
Of course the posting would have been on paper, the only social media then.
I am willing to bet good money that there are some very misandrous web pages/twiter tags/facebook accounts at Dalhousie that preceded this latest shirt-storm and are still on-going.
Proof: Dalhousie has a Gender and Women’s Studies Department.
QED.
Okay CBC, CTV, Global, G&M: check it out! (Holds breath. Not.)
Er.. Ezra?

Christie B and Rex M are two of the most intelligent and erudite journalists I have had the pleasure to follow. They should have a baby together.
Western men being castrated and sissified. Check.
Muslims taking over. Check.
All is going according to plan.
50 years ago young men would not have behaved like that. Then along came feminism and that changed all the rules about behaviour between the sexes. You can’t throw out the rules that demanded women act like ladies, and still expect men to behave like gentlemen.
The need to be told that what the did was not very professional behaviour for someone who will be a dentist, and that should be the end of it.
Silly college feminists and their make believe degrees in “women’s studies”. Nothing but clearing houses for future careers as low level government clerks.
Same feminists whose silence to the plight of Muslim women is deafening. If they only realized that if/when the head choppers take over western society, that cute little spa downtown won’t be specializing in nails, waxings and “vagazzelings” any more, just clitorectomies.
Oh but those brutish make dental students. Closet rapists, all of them. Pulleze!
“However, if you are Muslim you get a free pass no matter what is done in the name of your culture.”
BINGO…besides no such animal as Muzzie rape, I can have four wives, all on welfare, and have s$x with them any time. If they call rape, I can beat them, then divorce the beyootch and get a new s$x slave. PLUS, I can “introduce” my daughters to s%x without any “nasty” incest crap. Man. Why was I raised CofE??
Was there a else named Hermie amounst them?
Why was I raised CofE??
Same reason yer ma is not also yer aunt/sister/granny.
You won life’s lottery.
guess you ain’t been to Newfishland or the Tennessee hills, or Louisiana, them thar people have a whole strange way of life amoungst them:-))

“50 years ago young men would not have behaved like that.”
Oh yes they would. Ask any woman who walked by a construction site. 50 years ago they would not have twitter but they would be grabbing their crotches and whistle just as well. For as long as there were locker rooms (and long before that) there were men talking about pu$$y. Sorry that is a fact of life. We do not need to approve off this behavior but pretending that this is something new is absurd.
It is also not a problem anymore than a fart in a crowded elevator is a problem.
“The need to be told that what the did was not very professional behaviour for someone who will be a dentist, and that should be the end of it.”
Problem is that state sanctioned licensing monopolies feel entitled to have a say about how members of these institutions are supposed to behave in their private lives….
minuteman “50 years ago young men would not have behaved like that. Then along came feminism and that changed all the rules about behavior between the sexes. You can’t throw out the rules that demanded women act like ladies, and still expect men to behave like gentlemen.”
You have something there. I remember the days when saying the f-word in front of someone’s woman would have earned a thumping.
I`ve heard through the grapevine that in the same year there was a famale group page as well; it might be interesting to see what was on that for calibration/context purposes…
Women walking past a construction site might have heard whistles and lewd compliments fifty years ago, but construction workers wouldn’t have said quite what those Dalhousie dental students wrote down, and fifty years ago fellows who were studying for professions such as dentistry wouldn’t have written down stuff about women that construction workers wouldn’t have said loud enough for the women to hear. And as scar said, back then men knew when to make sure other men realised they had gone too far.
50 years ago, oh my that would be 1965? Right, the year that Jim Morrison become an idol? Oh the age of respect for women has just begun, or was that the Age of Aquarius?
One wonders gentlemen if your rosy outlook at the 60s could driven by amnesia or maybe by one acid trip too many?
…fifty years ago fellows who were studying for professions such as dentistry wouldn’t have written down stuff about women that construction workers wouldn’t have said loud enough for the women to hear.
Most women, then, didn’t dress and paint themselves up like whores, either…they get treated by how they act.
And now most women “dress and paint themselves up like whores”?
Yeah, with rings in their faces, tattoos, and all…
Stop using Facebook. Problem solved!
And there you have it, TheTooner, Scar and minuteman, a member of, what I am guessing is, your generation announcing that most young ladies of today are whores. So has he “earned a thumping”?
I work with a lot young people and I am willing to bet that the proportion of them who behave like whores is much lower today than it was during the summer of love.
Truly if there ever was one warranted restriction on the freedom of speech, it would be that the members of the baby boomer generation and those who raised them should be prohibited from ever using the phrase “back in my days” or anything to that effect. You built the world we live in today. Thank you very much.
Has anyone ever seen the 1978 movie Animal House?
Don’t ever post a trailer for this one!!!!!!!
I work with a lot young people and I am willing to bet that the proportion of them who behave like whores is much lower today than it was during the summer of love.
Yes, of course. That’s why there are now so many more abortions…
And who brought in the abortion laws of today? The generation who after copulating stoned and high in the mud and puke of Woodstock went on to become the social engineers of today and dominated the education system. Millennials, pathetic and needed, as they are, are not the generation that brought free love and drugs into the mainstream.
And who brought in the abortion laws of today?
And that means you have to use them? Typical, blame your problems on someone else…

“And who brought in the abortion laws of today? The generation who after copulating stoned and high in the mud and puke of Woodstock went on to become the social engineers of today and dominated the education system.”
Well, actually, no. The most forward of the baby boomers had been allowed to vote for 4 years before Trudeau:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abortion_in_Canada
And Trudeau was one of those that “copulated in the mud”.
If you can’t do the math – 1968 was 46 years ago.
If you truly need to kick someone in the balls (or punch their tits) do it to your grandparents.
You must be comprehension impaired (happens a lot to those suffering from LSD side effects). The point isn’t that today’s young behave responsibly and honorably, the point is that “back in your day” they behaved on average pretty much the same way they behave now (and if you are a baby boomer then behaved worse). There always was a proportion of whores and there always was a proportion of misogynous jerk. The only differences are facebook and twitter. All the “50 years ago men were chivalrous and women lady-like” stories are pure BS.
The point isn’t that today’s young behave responsibly and honorably…
Heh, apparently you’re ‘comprehension impaired’…if they’re so ‘responsible and honorable’, how come so many more abortions. Taxpayer funded, on top of it.
“They should have a baby together.”
Though I have the greatest respect for both Ms. Blatchford and Mssr. Murphy, that kid would really have to get by on brains because he or she likely wouldn’t be able to rely on the alternative.
I said:
“The point isn’t that today’s young behave responsibly and honorably…”
You replied:
“…if they’re so ‘responsible and honorable'”
Seriously?
Ok grandpa, go to sleep, maybe in the morning you’ll be able to think more clearly.
Oh and btw teen pregnancy rates have considerably decreased during the last two decades while abortion rates stayed largely constant. See for example (pdf): http://www.beststart.org/events/detail/bsannualconf08/presentations/PC1_mckay.pdf
The guys were wrong.
The women are wronger.
The desire to destroy the careers of these students because of a facebook posting is similar to the massacre in Paris.
Someone was offended, they want blood.
If the men get tossed, it would be best to toss the women too.
That would not make it right, but it might save a lot of grief in the future.
There are consequences to your actions.
For the record I pulled the number 50 out of thin air because to me it sounds like a really long time ago. To others here, maybe it wasn’t.
Also, without having been there I understand that the “peace love and groovyness” crowd of woodstock were the small majority who got all the press. The vast majority of people were still severely normal.
The vast majority of people were still severely normal.
Exactly. Which is why an argument that seriously refers to any “generation” as having homogenous attributes is absurd.
With so many conflicting arguments coming from the same writer, it’s easy to miss a turn…
I suppose, if I don’t like your last argument, you will soon have one to prove it wrong, anyway. I may as well leave you to argue with yourself…
minuteman….. very sensible comment. I agree.
The vast majority of people were still severely normal.
I suppose, so long as one defines rings in the face and covered in tattoos, like the savages, as normal…
The key word in the sentence of mine which you quoted is “were”. I was talking about the 60’s and used the word were. Tattoos and weird piercings were not common on anyone in the 60’s.
Nothing’s changed over the last 50 years, but the big difference is that everything that one posts to the internet is there forever (or at least until the last internet archive disappears after the SHTF).
Young males have always been obsessed with women and I’m glad that some drunken conversations from my youth have vanished forever. Kids now seem to think it’s amusing to photograph themselves when drunk in various states of undress or in compromising positions and post the photos to facebook. They seem to think this is “private” whereas it’s the equivalent of posting the photos all over campus 50 years ago.
The difference between 40-50 years ago and now is that ones stupid behavior was, unless extremely overt, only known to a few people who happened to be around when it occurred. Now, stupid facebook posts can be seen by anyone in the world and are available to any future employer should they decide to look at a person’s online tracks.
Being born paranoid, even in the 1970’s I wrote a lot of stuff anonymously and have continued this pattern once the internet came into existence. I don’t have any social media accounts under my real name and my only problem with such accounts is remembering the usernames and passwords under which they were created.
