2012-2013: The usual suspects berate that evil Harper gov’t from deporting two helpless “International Students”.
22 Apr 14: Protest organizer over the plight of the Walmart girls, berates evil Harper gov’t for allowing companies to hire “International Students”.
So, I guess for Larry Hubich, it’s good enough for Walmart™, but not good enough for McDonalds™.

The Liberal Left always squeal when it’s their jobs being taken by foreigners.
Imagine the horror of a fast food restaurant guaranteeing you 6 months of work from your economically depressed country and you get to live in a luxury apartment for only half of your fast food salary.
Anyone tell the CBC when Canadians go to work overseas that a contract of employment and wages toward housing is usually standard?
I think it’s time to take a hard look at the temporary foreign worker program in general. According to various annecdotes I’ve heard and read about such as here . It’s being used to legitimize illegals from the US and other shady black market type shenanigans. Jason Kenney, it’s time to audit the WHOLE THING.
Bwahaha!
Kate and crew, outstanding job. Great to hold all these hypocrites to account. The media party is not about to remind us of what they said when it was a convenient attack platform back then.
Too, it was SDA and only SDA that brought up the TV raffles on indian reserves during an election.
I think the government has proven it can’t effectively oversee this program. Even if it were working properly, it’s little more than a “goodie” for big business, allowing it to flood the country with foreign workers who have limited rights while they’re here, while increasing unemployment for affected Canadians (the CD Howe just released a damning study on this). The very structure of the program lends itself to abuse on the part of businesses, is of no benefit to Canadian citizens whatsoever, and little or no benefit to the overall economy. This is not a policy conservatives should support.
Kill the program dead, and salt the earth where it’s buried so it can’t grow back.
I heard some talking head of something or other stating this will be shutting down restaurants across the country. Let the Leftist bullshooters rant on, they have no case.
Mr. Hubich’s comments are predictable. As usual, he is running his mouth before all the facts have been presented and his track record of being nothing more than an ignorant thug renders his opinion even more irrelevant.
First thing I said to myself this morning upon seeing the Red Star‘s front-page, lance. ‘So the newspaper that wants uncontrolled (Third World) immigration into Canada is upset at foreigners here on temporary work visas taking jobs that the Red Star calls “McJobs” and thinks are beneath anyone’s dignity to work. Ooookay.’ And then I noticed an opinion column on the inside (can’t recall the dweeb’s name) acting as if Kenney hadn’t just closed the loophole.
BTW, no “A” section report on the CPC being cleared in the Robocalls’ investigation. (Didn’t bother checking elsewhere like section “D” second-last inside page.)
We already have a sizeable portion of the unemployed in Canada who will not move to Alberta let alone the ‘Siberia’ of Alberta Fort Mac, to take jobs that pay far in excess of $100,000 per year. Not only a high level of pay but an industry that trains workers while on the job. (transferable skills) What expectation can we have that workers will flock to low end entry jobs at fast food outlets? How about we explore the reasons why employers went overseas in the first place.
Labor has been trying to organize the Golden Arches, Timmy’s and Walmart for years. Perhaps when a Big Mac costs $20 everyone will be happy as customers stampede out the doors.
IMHO it is not a virtue to make a career out of working in an entry level position.
So removing foreigners who are working in Canada is eeeevile…
…and hiring foreign workers to work in Canada is eeeeevile.
…
Ok then.
“Labor has been trying to organize the Golden Arches, Timmy’s and Walmart for years.”
CT is right about this and I imagine it’s Larry’s ultimate goal. In both cases, he can paint the employer as the bad guys, exploiting the worker.
Whether the TFWP is good or not, I don’t care. It’s just another coordinated attack by the usual suspects on Businesses and the CPC. Larry and his cohorts have been working overtime on Twitter this week crying about the program.
I suspect the whole thing will blow over in a few weeks.
There is no labour shortage in these restaurants. There is a pay shortage. As usual the government has a program to drive down the wages of the poorest workers.
scar, That is simply not true.
There is no labour shortage in these restaurants. There is a pay shortage. As usual the government has a program to drive down the wages of the poorest workers.
100% agreement with Scar on that. I’m disappointed at how many posters here seem to think that something is okay if the Conservative government does it. Cheering for political parties like they were sports teams is unproductive.
Just how “temporary” are these workers likely to be? If Justin or Thomas take over from Stephen, how long will it take them to make “temporary workers” into permanent residents? Come to think of it, how long before Stephen does it pre-emptively himself?
In the example cited, in Weyburn, right in the oil patch. 500 jobs available right now, 1% unemployment. A pizza joint. Raising prices (i.e. wages) is not an option.
You’re arguing from a basis of ignorance.
I’m not sure what Exurban is talking about or what s/he is alluding to, but there is no problem with immigration, of any sort.
Given our Charter and Multicultural policies here it’s not just a piece of cake to get temporary workers to leave should they make a request to stay. Given this we would want to do due diligence in selecting people who come here for temporary work. This could be a problem when temporary work is over and these people are not employable especially since the government have a plan to allow only immigrants who can fill a need in various professions or trades.
Hubert and Harper are both evil idiot a-holes. Deporting those two students was insane and injust and banning restaurants from using the (extremely beneficial) TFWP was evil and economically illiterate. Seriously, DEY TRK R JRBS was a South Park parody. You’re not supposed to repeat verbatim unironically.
Immigration ALWAYS increases employment. Unemployment is one over-hyped metric that doesn’t really matter so much in provinces with labor shortages, which is what much of the west has. Kenney’s latest idiotard move will ruin businesses and augment big labor. We DESPERATELY need more immigration now!
The left . Always counting cow farts, not real substance. The student foreign worker exchange program jobs where just a cover for back door immigration.
By both Harper & the Liberals before them.
Instead of the legal 250,000 allowed this con let in 250,000 more immigrants,. Some like the RBC or other companies used it to fire Canadians for cheap Immigrant labour. From high tech personnel, to Tim Horton workers.
Something we all know now.
Everybody wants to pay restaurant workers more, until they’re asked to pay for the $25 tuna sandwich.
Instead of the legal 250,000 allowed this con let in 250,000 more immigrants,. Some like the RBC or other companies used it to fire Canadians for cheap Immigrant labour. From high tech personnel, to Tim Horton workers.
A start, but we need far more.
The current government’s restrictions on the TFWP is already hurting businesses.
http://business.financialpost.com/2014/04/25/foreign-workers-keep-canadians-employed/
$10/hr for unskilled labour is huge.
Its called entry level work, NOT A CAREER JOB.
If it doesnt pay enough, acquire a valid education, or a trade skill in demand.
You are not entitled to high wages because you have a heartbeat, or because you can flip a burger 10 seconds faster than Parminder
Indeed.
The TFWs are thrileld to be here. The employers are happy, because the TFWs work hard and are loyal.
It is unfortunate and no doubt exceptions to the rule, that there are some greedy anbd conniving individuals who are giving unreasonable demands, such as the TFWs having to live in the boss’ rental accommodation also, at high rental rates. Completely justified criticism in that regard.
However, by and large, the program works well for all parties. COnsidering ouyr lazy and entitled youth, its no surprise that employers wants hard working individuals, and get the TFWs instead.
Great Hypocrisy from Randall Pud Garrison, Jinny Sims, and the usual commie dippers regarding the program. Are they racist or anti-immigration? They seem to be running on the fence, counter to typical NDP defense of immigrants. SHAMEFUL behaviour from the Dippers
Having 2 young daughters, we rarely go out to eat as it is since the costs outweigh the experience. Having said that, even with foreign workers hired the cost for eating at McDonald’s and like places has been repulsive for some years. We have adapted like many other families by always bringing food on longer trips purchased at grocery stores.
I work in the oil and gas industry, and even I do not use my daily “sub” in restaurants. Grocery stores all the way while always supplying myself with a few tupperware containers. It takes a bit more planning, but I never go hungry and I eat healthier.
IDK if it is off topic at all, but this conversation reminds me of the professional sports industry. The average family needs to take out a small loan to watch a hockey game or baseball game, yet they still do. If the owners of teams continue to pay players over exuberant amounts of dough, they just might price their fans right out of existence. Is having pro-sports necessary? Is having restaurants on every corner necessary?
Is Jason Kenney running for the NDP?
http://www.vancouversun.com/business/Kenney+calls+upon+fast+food+employers+raise+wages+employ+more/9775993/story.html
Isn’t this one of those “sink or swim” situations of the free market? I am a so called capitalist and I believe Kenney is doing the right thing.
If the market can’t bare higher fast food prices, so be it. Just don’t expect me to be happy later when the fast food chains ask for subsidies.
The TFWP just skews the market. I’d say no to TFW’s in entry level jobs and definitely only temporary placements in other types of jobs. In southern ON, I have met some TFW’s in agriculture who have been temporary every year for the past 25 years coming up from Jamaica. Now it isn’t just outdoor farm work but year round greenhouse work plus chicken farm work. I tried to help my kids (one was definitely enthusiastic about it) find work on farms in the summer, but to no avail because it is EASIER for the farmers to hire foreign workers.
I believe McD’s and Tim’s have level pricing across the country, which is ridiculous. A coffee in Fort Mac should definitely be more than in Sarnia ON. Why not? Everything else is more. This would help pay the higher wages needed to draw workers. Maybe the lowering of welfare payments in some areas would also help drive some into the workforce.
The price of gas is up, the price of groceries are up, rent is up, your taxes are up, but just mention raising the price of a Big Mac because a restaurant worker might deserve more pay and you people are having a heart attack. Get a grip.
Easy now tiger.
Who said anything about a worker deserving more pay? A worker only deserves what the market will bare. No one makes money when only a small amount actually pays for it.
vic says ” Maybe the lowering of welfare payments in some areas would also help drive some into the workforce”
first person to address the real problem. If some one is close to the “street” they know that working the welfare system has become an art. Even back in 93 it was hard to hire at entry level, because EI and welfare were your competitors. Even tho I paid high for the industry I had a hard time hiring, and that was during the recession. Even today it’s hard to find some one to do odd jobs, they just do not want to work. So SPINAL CRAP, stuff it!!!!
It is absolutely repugnant to read the comments from people here who rejoice at their fellow Canadians being tossed to the curb after 20 years of service to be replaced by a foreigner from the Third World. These are people who could be these commentator’s own neighbours. If one went by these peoples’ comments you would think that the people of Saskatchewan are all lazy and entitled and that we need to replace the population of Saskatchewan with foreigners from the Third World who would tolerate abuses and lower working conditions out of fear of being deported.
Jason Kenney doesn’t believe in the free market. When there is a booming economy like there is in Alberta and Saskatchewan, the laws of the free market dictate that this translates into higher wages for the workers. So, what do Harper and Kenney do? They try to circumvent the laws of the free market and decide to import an army of starved foreigners. Why? In order to depress wages and keep corrupt crony capitalist business owners raking in the profits of the hot Alberta and Saskatchewan economies but not having to pay the corresponding free market dictated wages for their workers.
By the way, all these people here cheering the firing of Canadians to hire starved foreigners, shouldn’t feel too comfy, thinking that it is only fast food joints.
In Alberta, 65 Canadian ironworkers in the oil patch were pushed out of their $36-an-hour jobs and replaced with … drum roll please … temporary foreign workers at $18 an hour.
Law of supply and demand.
There’s lots of entry level workers available. The TFWs just happen to work harder than the others, and have far better attitudes.
If they want to be on welfare, so be it, although it says a lot about the lack of smarts the unskilled workers possess.
Or the laziness of same.
nobody is cheering the firing of Candians. Please show where anybody here has said that.
……………crickets………………
set your hair on fire much?
Just don’t expect me to be happy later when the fast food chains ask for subsidies.
The TFWP just skews the market.
So, what do Harper and Kenney do? They try to circumvent the laws of the free market and decide to import an army of starved foreigners.
What you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
It is absolutely repugnant to read the comments from people here who rejoice at their fellow Canadians being tossed to the curb after 20 years of service to be replaced by a foreigner from the Third World.
DEY TRK R JERBS
Great Hypocrisy from Randall Pud Garrison, Jinny Sims, and the usual commie dippers regarding the program. Are they racist or anti-immigration?
Haha the left doesn’t give a sh*t about poor people or immigrants, they are just props in their narcissistic melodrama. As soon as they threaten one of their sacred power structure-organized labor-they give them the shaft. Organized labor was a bastion of racism in the ’30s and I can see they’d have full co-operation from the mouthbreathers who think ‘free markets’ means keeping furriners from takin’ der jerbs.
Please. You are one of the people cheering the “Temporary Foreign Worker Program”. Well this is what this is. A more appropiate name for the program should be the “Fire-A-Canadian-Swap-For-Foreigner” program. Ridiculous that this is the crap a conservative government brings us.
No arguments in favour of their position, only ad hominem attacks. That is the trademark of the imbecile.
I suspect this “Spinal Tap” character must be exploiting some poor starved foreigners. Why don’t you pay your workers the wages that the free market dictates in a hot economy? Why do you go instead crying to the government to let you import starved foreigners? Why are you against the laws of the free market?
I suspect this “Spinal Tap” character must be exploiting some poor starved foreigners.
I suspect you are a raging imbecile who uses words he doesn’t understand to attempt and fail to cover up the xenophobia that motivates him.
Why are you against the laws of the free market?
THE TFW PROGRAM IS THE FREE MARKET IN ACTION YOU RAGING IMBECILE.
Truly an imbecile and a raging one at that, who thinks that shouting gives his lack of arguments any credibility.
Anyone with a minimum of intelligence knows that foreigners are an extraneous element to the Canadian economy. No one here is concerned with the economy of other foreign countries to which those foreign workers belong, but the Canadian economy. When you introduce an extraneous element in a given market like in this case the artificial flooding of the Canadian market with an army of starved foreigners, you are going to cause an artificial distortion of the Canadian market. This is NOT the free market in action, but an attempt to circumvent free market forces by introducing extraneous elements to the Canadian market.
This is what corrupt crony capitalist business owners in Canada do precisely to substract themselves from market forces. They want to rake in the benefits from the booming Canadian economy but not pay their workers the corresponding market dictated wages.
If the idea that these people have of free market includes the import of foreign workers, then the import of said foreign workers should be UNLIMITED as otherwise THEIR MARKET would not be truly FREE. Let’ s import 100 million starving Africans to Canada tomorrow. How about that? According to them that would be beneficial to the Canadian economy. But why stop at that? Why not 500 million? How about we bring in all the starving people in the world to Canada and we will usher in this great new era of economic progress [sarc]? But they should CAMPAIGN on that next election. Jason Kenney did the right thing today axing this monstrosity and it should be permanent. As an intelligent man Kenney knows that Canadians are overwhelmingly against this and only the corrupt crony capitalist business owners are the ones pushing for this.
There’s nothing like morons “Mr hate Red Tory” who thinks that exceptions prove the rule.
Ever think the TFWs fill the fast food industry because they work hard and are appreciative, or does that get a callous back of the hand because its an incovenient truth?
The welfarians and under-employed could fill those roles instead, but, they are ABOVE that entry level work.
Menial labour is menial labour, but you act like an entitled union member expecting automatic pay icnreases because you punched the clock day in day out, without any merit.
If you want better pay, as I said above, get a skilled trade, in demand, or a valid education, or special in demand skills (like your truly!) where your employer happily pays out $38/hr for a productive, enthusiastic and skilled semi-professsional with a great attitude.
Or you can punch the clock with your CUPE clods.
Rather the TFWs than “washed up on the shore” illegals who are only here to collect welfare and scam the system, who the NDP prefer
I talked to a fast food business owner in a small town I used to live in. About how he had so many immigrants working for him. He told me even with a big help wanted sign up before the summer he had only had 1 applicant for a job. He could not find local teens who wanted to work for the summer. He did have a long time 6 year local employee who was now earning $15 a hour.
Jason Kenney sounds like he read a prepared script from Ken Georgetti and Jim Sinclair.
Appeasing his opponents will not get their votes, today, tomorrow, or ever.
foreigners are an extraneous element to the Canadian economy
1) WTF does that mean? 2) Why should I care about your poorly-veiled xenophobia?
When you introduce an extraneous element in a given market like in this case the artificial flooding of the Canadian market with an army of starved foreigners, you are going to cause an artificial distortion of the Canadian market.
Bonehead thinks supply and demand only applies to native-born Canadian. Bonehead is a xenophobe.
But why stop at that? Why not 500 million? How about we bring in all the starving people in the world to Canada and we will usher in this great new era of economic progress [sarc]?
Sounds great to me. It built America into what it is too bad we have mouth-breathers like you and your NDP buddies standing in the way.
