  5. Marty, great little video. The depiction of Putin as Hitler was spot on, but I do not think he was riding a unicorn, but rather a band of infiltrated Спецназ with no insignia and some local выплачиваемые анархисты.

    Destroying as few as 9 electricity substations in N. America and a transformer manufacturing plant would leave N. America without power for 12-18 months.
    Just one of those “benefits” of globalization which has left N. America in the most fragile situation that it’s ever been in. From the articles map, it looks like BC would also be knocked out by the single vulnerable substation in the western grid.
    Don’t know about you, but I think it’s time to buy a gasoline powered generator tomorrow as well as 30 5 gal gas cans and a kilo of BHT (to prevent the gasoline from turning into napalm with hopefully prolonged storage). Also time to switch to LED lights as computers are the primary thing I need electricity for and for heating I’ve got lots of firewood and a chainsaw for when I need more.
    Likely the down period won’t be anywhere near 12 months, but that would mean completely local electrical generation. I guess the bright side of this is that after 2 weeks without power, likely any watermelons protesting the construction of new hydroelectric dams will be hanging from “old growth” trees with a spotted owl nailed to their chests.

  11. Really pathetic aren’t we, that we allow this to happen in Canada? We’re such cowards that we do not even have a law governing abortion. A child can be brutally killed at 9 months gestation if only the top of it’s head is still in the woman (I can’t call her a mother). Oh Canada, you have not stood on guard for these.

    The bursts would have wreaked havoc on the Earth’s magnetic field, matching the severity of the 1859 Carrington event, the largest solar magnetic storm ever reported on the planet. That blast knocked out the telegraph system across the United States, according to University of California, Berkeley research physicist Janet Luhmann.
    “Had it hit Earth, it probably would have been like the big one in 1859, but the effect today, with our modern technologies, would have been tremendous,” Luhmann said in a statement.

  15. The West’s “robust response” to Russia’s annexation of Ukrainian territory has so far provided only entertainment value for the Russian propaganda machine. One of the supposed heavyweights on the US blacklist – Vladislav Surkov – has been reported widely on Russian TV as saying that he is “flattered” by US attention. Many of those on the list may not have western bank accounts to freeze, while those who do have been omitted. This fine message follows that received on Feb 27 when Ukraine and its neighbours discovered that a legally binding commitment (made with the Budapest Memorandum) to guarantee Ukraine’s territorial integrity if the latter gave up its nuclear arsenal meant as much, or as pitifully little, as all western statements of deep concern and strong condemnation.

  19. Nice to see the progressive Redford forced out now let’s see the Alberta Conservatives ditch the progressives, form a Conservative party.
    Another move that should be taken is on the Federal front, the Harper Conservatives need to make the CBC strictly a news service, politically neutral, or sell it to the highest bidder, it’s nothing but an arm of the Liberal Left.
    We cannot afford people like Mansbridge who reads the “news” but whose salary is apparently top secret which can only lead us to one conclusion, we’d be shocked.

  28. Peterj- it surprises me not at all. On the other side of the spectrum, I breezed through pre-board in Newark (EWR) not long ago, presenting my boarding pass and passport. My wife, in another lane, was not having the same experience. The agent appeared perplexed. As I passed by, I could see she had a passport in her hand, open to the picture page. The photo was of an older caucasian gentleman with white hair and an obvious white beard – not a valid description of my wife who is asian and has neither white hair nor beard of any kind. Somehow, my wife and I had switched passports (but not boarding passes) and while one agent was unsure as to what to do, the other appeared not to know – or care – there might be a potential problem.
    It’s amateur theatre.
