  1. So you’re fine with the notion that the state can just take your house even if you haven’t been convicted of anything?
    Nifty.

  2. That’s not a problem, strad, because they don’t need to prove that you “engage in criminal activity”.

  3. Your faith in the omniscience and integrity of cops and politicians is truly heartwarming.

  5. That provision is already in place in Canada. It was in the budget of March 2013 on page 143 or maybe 243 or wherever but it is in there. If a Canadian bank goes broke – and they did in 2008, they can just take the money out of your account to save themselves. The guv stuck that in the budget so that they won’t have to use “public” money.

  7. Al, thanks for that. I had a great uncle that survived 5 years on the White Sea canal only to die in his next 5 year term in the snow cutting timber near a labour camp in the Perm area.
I wonder if that BBC production is available on DVD?

“He says he was never witness to executions, nor did he see torture taking place. That wasn’t his job. His task was that of taking photos of the corpses afterwards. He would snap four or five images per body — of the face and other parts of the person — documenting the cause of death, insofar as it was possible to determine. He did so tens of thousands of times between March 2011 and August 2013 — when he finally fled Syria, taking some 55,000 photos with him on a USB stick. The images are of …”

  9. If he wasn’t charged and convicted, neither did he.
Talk about defying common sense. This person implies that a person engaging in criminal activity is not a criminal unless ‘official justice’ says they are a criminal.
Someone was just talking about faith in ‘integrity’ and ‘omniscience’ of institutions. heh

  10. Let’s all go over to strad’s place and take his stuff. I think he’s up to something.

  11. So…if you have a nice house or expensive car and the police haven’t met their monthly target for seizures, you see nothing wrong with them busting into your house and possibly planting some pot on your garage while they are searching without a warrant because of a anonymous phone call they supposedly received ? Up to you to prove you are innocent and even if a court throws the charge out you lose your house anyway because it goes to civil court and you can’t really prove you’re innocent. You’re good with that ? If you take away the official justice system, it’s your word against the cops and you’re good with that ? Just hope your neighbors and the cops like you because that’s a nice house you have,… shame if anything were to happen to it. Don’t think it can happen ? I don’t either, but there is nothing to prevent it from happening and that’s what should make you think twice about your stand on the subject.

  13. If you take away the official justice system, it’s your word against the cops and you’re good with that ?
The forfeiture law is part of the official justice system. Helloo…
Anyway, in this particular case, given the facts presented, a druggie is suffering the consequences. Not a bad thing.
Sometimes bad laws have good outcomes. Sometimes good laws have bad outcomes, all depends on who administers the law. That would be the point…

  14. You obviously miss the point. Whatever the law says, it will be perverted by immoral people.
Maybe this quote will point that out more succinctly.
“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” – John Adams
The further society gets from being as John Adams described, the more laws and regulations need to be in place to regulate behavior. People bring it on themselves, it’s a natural law.
Secondly, property rights don’t exist anywhere that I’m aware of. Don’t believe that, try not paying your taxes.

  15. “Whatever the law says, it will be perverted by immoral people.”
And you’re OK with that ? Glad you cleared that up. Since this is readers tips segment I’ll drop it now, but can’t help wondering if you’re really dumb as a stick or only pretending.

  16. A rumour is out there that Michele is a former “he” and a football player in her previous life as well. I’m not saying I believe this, just that it’s out there.

  17. The G&M have a story up about the audacity of the Conservatives releasing a budget during the Olympics.
    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/flaherty-sets-date-for-federal-budget/article16517950/#dashboard/follows/
They have conveniently forgot that PM Chretien did the same back in 1994.
They do not mention that the Liberal convention is being held on the last weekend of the Olympics. That would be the same weekend as the GOLD medal hockey game, as well as when most medals are awarded.
Are the Liberals hiding something ???
YES, they are. They will be electing a new president. Their other backroom boy, Mike Crawley, is stepping down.
This is the man who was elected 2 years ago in the midst of a media frenzy. This is the man who was supported by BOTH McGuintys, federal and provincial. This is the man who was a lifelong hard-core Liberal supporter. He ran the Ontario Liberal party for years. His alternative ‘energy’ company has a 1/2 BILLION dollar contract with the Ontario gov’t. Did I mention the McGuintys?
Will the media care? Will there be one article about why Crawley is stepping down?
No, they know who has the best hospitaliy suites, and the Liberals want to make prostitution legal, amd they know what they are.
    Ethics be damned,full speed ahead.

  19. I find the Crawley exit to be very strange. Perhaps he was too close to the McGuinty’s — maybe it is a sign of a rift of some sort. Or maybe they felt Crawley was tainted by his business interests. Whatever, you can be sure the media won’t bother asking any questions.

  20. And you’re OK with that ?
I’m saying it’s your own idiot fault if you also are in agreement with confiscation of a person’s home for any reason. Clear enough?
And, yes, I’m okay with people bearing responsibility for their actions.

  21. Yes Linda, I agree.
The hoopla that surrounded his victory over Sheila was way over the top…
…the silence that surrounds his departure is odd.
I have not seen any mention of it in the official media, not even the Sun. It is very hush-hush.
IMHO, Bob Gainey’s daughter will be the next president. It will be announced, and no one will question how she got there.
I blame the cons for cutting the CBC’s budget so much that they can only focus their ‘crack investigative reporters’ on one target.
