paper published today in Geophysical Research Letters finds that solar activity modulates the natural ocean oscillations the Pacific Decadal Oscillation [PDO] and the North Atlantic Oscillation [NAO]. These ocean oscillations, in turn, have large scale effects upon global climate.
The authors find when the PDO is in phase with the 11 year sunspot cycle, the pattern of sea level pressures and surface temperatures shift in comparison to when they are out of phase. The authors also find the NAO is amplified when it is in phase with the sunspot cycle.
If only there were some . . . natural explanation for falling and rising temperatures. Such a hypothetical source of warming would have to be massive, however. On the order of magnitude of our own Sun.
This was taught in intro Geomorph course for decades. Sun patterns drive ocean patterns that make climate patterns happen.
Because change is to climate as wet is to water, simply an intrinsic part of the whole.

The argument is you remove the competing solar and other factors from the “models,” you are left with noise, which can’t be attributed to anything else, so therefore it’s human induced, based solely on rising atmospheric CO2.
– Except there hasn’t been any noise.
– Except solar shows a far greater correlation and, at best, their “models” have failed to fully quantify the oceans’ effect, a very serious error given their role in CO2.
– Except there exists zero true empirical or even experimental evidence of AGW theory.
– Except the solution is useless wind turbines and climate justice taxation.
– Except the poor get hurt the most in their new watermelon economies.
– Except the solution is, by sheer coincidence, world socialism and abounding kleptocracy.

If climate science does not yet understand how the sun and clouds affect climate then it would explain why the current models have failed. It gets back to the original problem with CAGW- they started with the wrong hypothesis : man made CO2 is the primary climate driver and then only removing natural cycles they could prove and understand. The alternative hypothesis: Natural cycles are the primary driver and then prove that current changes are unnatural due to MM CO2- should have been the focus.
The two hypotheses look the same but they’re not. *Apologies to the religious in advance*. In previous eras all things that were not understood we’re assumed to be [deity of choice]’s handiwork. Science then slowly began to explain the supernatural and brought the process back into the natural world. Likewise a MM CO2 hypothesis assumes that everything not yet understood must be anthropogenic effects and science must prove otherwise. It’s backwards because it sets up MM CO2 as the default mechanism instead of natural cycles.
Even the linked article makes sure to state that these cycles may only be pertinent to the preindustrial era. Really? Natural warming and cooling cower in the face of the Almighty MM CO2 molecule? I don’t think they actually believe that…the current environment in climate science compels them to guard against charges of heresy.
This is so logical it will never fly. How can the UN, IPCC and all the other vested interests continue to milk the gullible public if the sun is the primary player ? There’s just too much money at stake here to give common sense a seat at this table. Not to mention a whole generation programmed to scream for higher carbon taxes just to save the planet. It will take another decade just to convince the POTUS and Hollywood that CO2 is not a pollutant. I cheer the small victories but we will need a few more really ugly winters before the brainwashed hordes come out of their stupor and the MSM can figure out how to get out of the corner they’ve painted themselves into. At least we are taking baby steps towards the road to sanity, but we have a long way to go.
