  1. Tam at View From The Porch:

You think a bunch of people can sit down and… Lux Fiat! …re-write the rules for how 15% of the economy works in one fell swoop, in what amounts to a giant bong-fueled bull session, and have nothing go wrong? You might as well try to change the spark plugs on your car while the engine’s running.

Then again, these are people who think that the efficiency of internal combustion engines or the amount of water it takes to carry off a turd are governed by legislative magic and not the laws of physics.

The naive credulity these people have towards the power of government, their blind faith that they can tamper with the machinery without it hurting anybody, differs in kind nor quality not one lick from the most snake-handlin’ Pentecostal’s faith that Jesus will keep the serpent from biting..

  2. According to Richard Fernandez at The Belmont Club, the list below identifies the top ten worst Hurricanes/Typhoons/Cyclones on record, starting in 1584 AD.
    1. Great Bhola Cyclone, Bangladesh 1970 (Nov 12) Bay of Bengal 300,000 – 500,000 deaths
    2. Hooghly River Cyclone, India and Bangladesh 1737 Bay of Bengal 300,000 deaths
    3. Haiphong Typhoon, Vietnam 1881 West Pacific 300,000 deaths
    4. Coringa, India 1839 Bay of Bengal 300,000 deaths
    5. Backerganj Cyclone, Bangladesh 1584 Bay of Bengal 200,000 deaths
    6. Great Backerganj Cyclone, Bangladesh 1876 Bay of Bengal 200,000 deaths
    7. Chittagong, Bangladesh 1897 Bay of Bengal 175,000 deaths
    8. Super Typhoon Nina, China 1975 (Aug 5) West Pacific 171,000 deaths
    9. Cyclone 02B, Bangladesh 1991 (May 5) Bay of Bengal 138,866 deaths
    10. Cyclone Nargis, Myanmar 2008 (May 3) Bay of Bengal 138,366 deaths
The CBC has no evidence that hurricanes are increasing in intensity. Cyclone Yolanda/haiyan was definitely not the strongest storm to ever hit land. Hurricane Camille in 1969 was stronger than Yolanda/Haiyan. See article by Paul Homewood here http://wattsupwiththat.com/2013/11/13/deconstructing-the-hype-on-super-typhoon-haiyan-yolanda/

  3. Shocka!

Seattle voters have elected a socialist to city council for the first time in modern history. Kshama Sawant’s lead continued to grow on Friday, prompting 16-year incumbent Richard Conlin to concede..

Probably just momentum from the Obamacare rollout.

  4. I’m surprised Michelle hasn’t told Barack to STOP puffing out his lower lip like that. Makes him look like a bullfrog.

  5. This is truly frightening to watch. Blacks in the US are playing a new game called Knockout. A gang of blacks will pass you walking on the street then one will, with his full power, punch you in the face and try to “knock” you out cold. A few people have died already from hitting their heads on the ground. Oh, and by the way they only attack non-blacks, ,male or female. The black thugs and their friends think this is just fun and great laughs. This is just insane but it could happen to anyone of us.

  6. I followed a link from Wattsupwiththat here. From the story:
“Calgary’s rally, held in the Plus 15 walkway outside of Enbridge’s location in Fifth Avenue Place, was just one of a number of gatherings held across Canada.
Organizers of the ‘Defend our Climate’ events say Stephen Harper’s government is refusing to take meaningful action on climate change.”
Unlike the protesters, who took action against their local climate changing to winter mode. How did they take action? They stayed inside.

  7. When one of the thugs gets a bullet in the face, the ‘fun’ will be gone from this racist hate crime.

  8. “Spanish environmental activists could face lengthy jail terms for pie protest”
“Four men due to appear in court in Madrid in case likened by defence lawyer to the Inquisition”
“The four accused – Gorka Ovejero Gamboa, Julio Martín Villanueva, Ibón García Garrido and Mikel Álvarez Forcada – are members of Mugitu, an environmental activist group dedicated to non-violent protest against the rail plans. Ovejero could be sentenced to up to nine years in prison and the other three could face six years.”

    “The Great Green Meltdown”
“How Economic Arguments Against Nuclear Highlight Environmentalist Delusions”
“After the world’s leading climate scientists called on environmentalists to support nuclear power two weeks ago, mainstream green groups went on CNN to declare atomic energy too expensive. The goal was to distance mainstream environmentalists from shrill antinuclear activists like Helen Caldicott (above left). But after decades of calling for higher energy prices through cap and trade or carbon pricing — as well as subsidies for expensive renewable energy — to prevent climate catastrophe, the economic arguments against the atom made by the NRDC’s Ralph Cavanagh (above right) only further exposed the hypocrisy and delusion of the antinuclear environmentalism.”

  9. I believe that’s already happened. Trayvon was playing “blackout” on zimmerman but he apparently “lost”.

  10. “Life imitates my lame jokes at puny anti-Rob Ford protest”
“Arnie just returned from the anti-Ford protest at City Hall, which was attended by maybe five dozen people on this, a clear and mild Toronto day.
He has pix up at his blog.
I’ve been joking that Ford detractors’ biggest complaint about him is that now “everyone is laughing at Toronto,” and pointing out how much this sounds like Carrie’s mom.
EyeOnACrazyPlanet emails to point out that the woman speaking in the Sun’s video here may in fact BE Mrs. White!”

  11. Andrew Coyne smears the toothless proles and the scum on the “right”:

“…of all (Ford’s) enablers, the most culpable are the strategists, the ones who fashioned his image as the defender of the little guy, the suburban strivers, against the downtown elites, with their degrees and their symphonies — the ones who turned a bundle of inchoate resentments into Ford Nation. Sound familiar? It is the same condescending populism, the same aggressively dumb, harshly divisive message that has become the playbook for the right generally in this country, in all its contempt for learning, its disdain for facts, its disrespect of convention and debasing of standards.”

Yes, you read that right: conservatives are the ones who disrespect convention, and “debase standards.”
    Incroyable.

  12. “It is the same condescending populism, the same aggressively dumb, harshly divisive message that has become the playbook for the right generally in this country, in all its contempt for learning, its disdain for facts, its disrespect of convention and debasing of standards. They can try to run away from him now, but they made this monster, and they will own him for years to come.”
Andrew Coyne wrote an ACID mouthful there, but I guess he can consort with Rosie DiManno if he wishes.

  13. Andrew Coyne for all of his pedigree and his “learning” — he’s a Trinity College grad, after all — is a member of the corrupt consensus media. He’s connected to The Toddler through his cousin Deborah Coyne who is the mother of Pierre Elliot Trudeau’s only daughter, which makes him Sarah Elisabeth Trudeau’s first cousin, once removed.
This guy shouldn’t be writing on politics — maybe American politics but not Canadian. His product is sullied by these connections — and, besides, the Canadian media doesn’t need more incest. Our media are way too incestuous, leading to this kind of obscene garble from Coyne.
He’s got a nerve talking about “contempt for learning,” “disdain for facts,” “disrespect for convention,” and “debasing of standards.” Those are the domain of the Librano$, n’est-ce pas?: Adscam, Andrew? Sidewinder? Maurice Strong? Kyoto? Canadian Steamship Lines? Power Corporation? Conservatives are trying to bring some respectability and gravitas back to politics — an uphill climb given the media’s constant hostility and animus towards them. PM Harper wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth, something the political/media elite can’t and won’t forgive.
It’s unfortunate that born-with-a-silver-spoon-in-his-mouth Coyne is so blinded by his Liberal connections he can’t see how badly the Liberal$ have debased politics in this country. His accusations against the right are risible. For a smart guy, he’s not very smart.

  14. “The Greenpeace 30 Made Their Prison Bed – Let Them Lie In It”
“Enter into Russian-annexed ‘domestic’ waters one Dutch-registered Arctic Sunrise vessel. A vessel crewed by a motley bunch of known propagandist foreigners bent on nefarious terrorist-like agitation and aggression. Agitators sponsored by the same Greenpeace organisation responsible for boarding a Shell Arctic ice-breaker in the Baltic in May 2012 and two Arctic-bound Shell drill-ships in New Zealand in February and July 2012. Greenpeace means business. Unfortunately for Greenpeace, so do the Russians when their energy-fuelled national security depends on it.
Let me be very clear. I am not here advocating the Russian way of ‘doing society’ or operating ‘international justice’ generally. But just because the Kremlin all too often skates over genuine human rights issues with surly contempt, it does not mean that Russia lacks the legitimate and moral right to act in its national interest when openly threatened. Bleeding-heart liberal MPs and Russia-vilifying British TV reports apart, if the Greenpeace 30 believe they are deserving of concerted national and international action aimed at freeing them, they can think again.
They made their Murmansk prison bed, let them lie in it – at least until they’ve learned their Russian lesson.”

  15. Andrew Coyne finally shows his colours very vividly with no attempt at objectivity. I think Laurentian Consensus media personalities like Coyne are beginning to realize what Darrel Bricker and John Ibbitson wrote in “The Big Shift”, and is lashing out. He thinks how dare anyone not think like an Laurentian Elite and not pay obeisance.
